American Wolf won a maiden at Ballarat before stepping up sharply in class in the Listed VRC St Leger, answering Young and co-trainer Trent Busuttin's questions about the son of Tivaci seeing out the 2800m trip.
'Sometimes you just have to throw these horses into a bit of a deep end,' Young said.
'Third-up after 2800(m), sometimes you just have to have a crack at it.
'He had a beautiful run, he sat out the back third-last and relaxed beautifully.
'John Allen just rode him an absolute treat. He was tough late.'
Bookmakers promoted American Wolf to $15 in South Australian Derby betting after his VRC St Leger win.
Young said American Wolf would have every chance to prove to connections he could handle the eight-day back-up into the SA Derby.
'He's going on the right path and winning here at Flemington means he's going to be a three, four or $5 favourite and hopefully he can take the back-up,' Young said.
'If he pulls up well, eats up well and does all the usual things, they're only three once.
'You don't have to do much with them. He's run 28 (00m) today and he'll run 25 (00m) next week so you've just got to tick them over basically.
'He's on the up and he's still coming up to his peak.'
Earlier, Highvol lived up to trainer Nick Ryan's opinion of him with his debut win in the Listed Anzac Day Stakes.
Jamie Melham steered Highvol ($9) to a determined win over favoured runners Stay Cosmic ($4.40 equal favourite) and Just Kick ($5.50).
'From day dot, we've always had a big opinion of him,' Ryan's representative Damian Kefford said.
'Nick decided, 'look, we'll roll the dice here'. Nick always thought he'd be a 1400m-plus horse.
'It is a big task to come to Flemington for your first start over 1400m, but the raps that we had on him were warranted today.'

Seven-year-old galloper having just his 15th start at Sandown on Saturday
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Talbragar isn't getting any younger but trainer Julius Sandhu suggests the best may still be yet to come with the talented galloper. A late start to his career means despite being an eight-year-old in just a few months, Talbragar has only been to the races on 14 occasions. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Returning last month in a hot form race at Caulfield, Talbragar will now tackle Saturday's Benchmark 84 (1000m) at Sandown Hillside where Sandhu hopes he can improve on an impressive second-up record. 'I was happy with his first-up run and thought he might have finished a bit closer with some luck,' Sandhu said. 'He got a little bit tight for room coming around the bend and there are a few other little bits and pieces that didn't quite go his way. 'He's only had a few second-up runs in his career but has won two of them so let's hope he can make it three on Saturday.' • Comeback star can give Cummings a Golden send-off The Cranbourne-based conditioner initially wanted to tackle last Saturday's meeting at Flemington with Talbragar but a minor issue on race morning forced him to scratch. 'He came through that run in good order and was meant to go to the races to run last Saturday at Flemington but he had a minor hiccup on race morning,' Sandhu said. 'It meant we had to scratch him but it was nothing serious but we just needed to do what we needed to do.' Trainer Julius Sandhu will send Talbragar to Sandown Hillside on Saturday. Picture: Getty Images Sandhu also suggested punters read little into Talbragar's one-run spring campaign when he failed to fire in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes at The Valley. 'I just thought he came into the spring a little bit ordinary and I wasn't happy with the way he pulled up,' Sandhu said. 'There was no injury or anything, I just wasn't happy completely with the way he came through the run so I just looked after him, gave him a break and brought him back.' Sandhu is the fourth trainer for Talbragar but he knows the horse as good as anyone having trained his younger brother, Lofty Strike. Lofty Strike nearly took Sandhu to Group 1 heights on multiple occasions and while it's very unlikely Talbragar will do that, he arguably boasts the title of best-bred gelding racing on Saturday, being by super sire Snitzel and out of 2013 Golden Slipper winner Overreach. 2025 Stradbroke Handicap field: Tony Gollan's gun galloper Transatlantic made second emergency
The Instructor has grabbed the last spot in Saturday's Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap starting field, with Tony Gollan's great hope Transatlantic stranded outside the field as the second emergency. Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, The Instructor was the 29th horse in ballot order but snared the last spot in the 18-horse final field when it was declared on Tuesday morning. It will give young Victorian jockey Jett Stanley a chance to score a Stradbroke fairytale. Rothfire was given the all-clear for Stradbroke takeoff by trainer Rob Heathcote and was an acceptor, with James McDonald booked to ride, in Saturday's $3m Stradbroke. Rothfire will still face more vets' scrutiny through the week but the Heathcote camp is delighted with his progress from a minor foot injury that had at one stage threatened to rule the grand warrior out of the Stradbroke. Lindsay Park has the two Stradbroke favourites – War Machine and Rise At Dawn. They had been sweating on a start for their second seed Rise At Dawn, who had been number 24 in the ballot order, but he easily made the field. Chris Waller 's sprinter Coleman is the first emergency with Gollan's great Stradbroke hope, Transatlantic, the second emergency. Star jockey @ZacLloydx will ride Bosustow on Saturday as he attempts to defend the Stradbroke Handicap title he won last year aboard Stefi Magnetica. At Eagle Farm this morning, he spoke to Racenet's @daniel_pace17 about the 3yo's chances. — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) June 9, 2025 • On Monday, Gollan told Racenet he was resigned to missing the Stradbroke starting field with Transatlantic who won the Listed Spear Chief at Eagle Farm last Saturday. Gollan narrowly missed qualifying Antino (2023) and Freedom Rally (2024) and both of those horses were instead deployed to win the Wayne Wilson Mile on Stradbroke day. If Transatlantic doesn't gain a Stradbroke start, he will race in the Wayne Wilson Mile. There is a racing rule in Queensland that means that Transatlantic wasn't eligible for a Stradbroke weight penalty after his win in the Spear Chief. He could have been potentially re-handicapped if he had won a race that offered $95,000 or more to the winner – but the Spear Chief first prizemoney was $92,000. If Transatlantic does not make the Stradbroke field, young gun Brisbane jockey Angela Jones will ride Toby Edmonds' three-year-old filly Spicy Martini. Golden Mile can give James Cummings farewell Group 1 win with Godolphin in Stradbroke Handicap
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. James Cummings believes it will be a fairytale story if Golden Mile can win this week's Stradbroke Handicap in the gelding's remarkable comeback from retirement. And Sydney trainer Cummings is confident that Golden Mile will handle the seven-day back-up following his third placing in last Saturday's Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm, with Jason Collett on board. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Golden Mile was briefly stood for $16,500 at Sheikh Mohammed's Northwood Park Victorian base last season but he was injured after covering 14 mares. He was then retired from stud duty and gelded, returning to the racetrack in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Randwick on March 1 when he finished sixth, 3¼ lengths behind Iowna Merc. Cummings isn't interested in talk about the Stradbroke being one of the weakest fields in many years – he just wants to win Queensland's premier race for the first time since 2019 (Trekking) in his final season with powerhouse stable Godolphin. It was announced late last month that Cummings and Godolphin would split at the end of July after an eight-year partnership, with the Dubai-based stable to adopt a public training model. Golden Mile (second from left) will back-up in the Stradbroke Handicap after just missing in the Kingsford Smith Cup. Picture: Trackside Photography 'I always say try and win it,' Cummings said of the 1400m Stradbroke. 'It'd be a great story for Golden Mile, who has come back from stud duties and he's been warming to a win. 'If he can get that in this prep in the Stradbroke, that'd be some feat to pull off and all the accolades would go to Golden Mile himself. 'I wouldn't seek to diminish the depth of the field at all and I haven't seen the final field either. 'What I would say is that good Group 1 weight-for-age form should be golden form.' • Stanley dreaming of Stradbroke win to make grandad proud And Golden Mile certainly has that form after finishing a fraction behind superstar mare Joliestar and Zarastro in a thrilling Kingsford Smith Cup. 'He was excellent and he's been building up to that,' Cummings said. 'A bit over a month ago he screamed home for third in the (Group 2) Victory Stakes and that had him back in the form he was 12 months ago, just prior to him going to stud. 'It's been a slow burn to get him up to where he is now but to give a sight in a Group 1 against Joliestar and to defeat some very good Group 1 sprinters in his final lead-up run to the Stradbroke, where he drops to 53.5 kilos, is a very good recipe. 'He should be an even better horse out to 1400m, a little bit further under the handicap conditions that we'll see this week.' • Gollan faces more Stradbroke heartbreak by prizemoney rule Collett will again ride Golden Mile in the $3m Stradbroke at Eagle Farm, just seven days after the gelding's massive run on a soft track at the same venue. 'I've never backed him up before,' Cummings revealed about the 2022 Caulfield Guineas winner. 'I've pushed him in the past to go another run and he's rewarded us because he's a very tough horse. 'While I've never done it before, I was drawn to the idea to persevere with that program for the Stradbroke. 'I'd say I'd be confident, without having done it before, that he would be the type of horse who would relish the back-up.'
