Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific cancels 22 flights on Friday, Saturday after bad weather

Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways has cancelled 22 flights in the next two days as a result of inclement weather on Thursday, and warned passengers to confirm bookings before heading to the airport.
The airline said that 13 flights were cancelled on Friday and another nine on Saturday after black and red rainstorm warnings on Thursday wreaked havoc at the airport.
There were also extensive weather-related air traffic control delays for all inbound and outbound aircraft, it said on Friday.
Hong Kong issued its fifth black rainstorm warning on Thursday so far this year, a record-breaking number since the Hong Kong Observatory's database began in 1998.
'As a result the deployment of multiple aircraft and crews was impacted, with many forced to be held overnight outside Hong Kong,' Cathay said.
'In order to minimise the impact on customers and recover the schedule as quickly as possible, we have to cancel 13 flights scheduled today and nine flights scheduled tomorrow.'
The cancellations largely involved regional flights.

India warns citizens against job scammers exploiting Malaysia visa-free scheme

The High Commission of India has cautioned its citizens against unscrupulous parties duping them with claims of employment opportunities in Malaysia under the 30-day visa-free entry scheme. In a travel advisory, the high commission said it recently became aware that crooked visa and employment agents are misleading Indian nationals into believing they could take advantage of the visa waiver to seek jobs in Malaysia. It reminded its nationals that the visa-free scheme is not for employment. The advisory also raised concerns over instances of its citizens being denied entry upon arrival at Malaysian airports after failing to meet the terms and conditions required by the Malaysian Immigration Department. It stated that, in addition to suspicions of seeking employment, other factors leading to affected travellers being categorised under 'Not to Land' (NTL) included insufficient funds for their visit, inadequate proof of accommodation, absence of return tickets and various other violations. The high commission said that upon issuance of the NTL notice, passengers are required to remain within an airport building until they are repatriated by the airline they had travelled on earlier.

Hong Kong Observatory issues T1 typhoon warning signal

New users who download our updated app get a seven-day free trial. The Hong Kong Observatory issued the No 1 typhoon signal at 10.20pm on Saturday night, with the warning to be in place until at least 9am on Sunday before being upgraded to No 3, as the city was expected to face occasional squally showers and thunderstorms. The weather forecaster said an area of low pressure over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea had intensified into a tropical depression, and was estimated to be about 690km (429 miles) south-southwest of the city at 10pm. The Observatory is expected to upgrade the signal to the No 3 warning between 9am and noon on Sunday. The tropical cyclone would maintain a distance of over 500km from Hong Kong on Sunday, the forecaster said. 'Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds will strengthen tomorrow,' a spokesman said.
