Avaland deepens community well-being commitment nationwide

The Star29-04-2025

PETALING JAYA: Avaland has kicked off the second year of its health screening programme in partnership with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Malaysia.
Building on the success of over 2,000 screenings in 2024, this year's goal is to double that - to reach 4,000 screenings across NKF dialysis centres and Avaland's sales galleries.
At the heart of this initiative is Avaland's commitment to its mission of creating communities and enhancing lives, while nurturing a strong culture of giving among its people.
Partnering with NKF's Public Education department, this year's health screening was rolled out at Avaland Gallery @ Anja Bangi recently, with upcoming sessions scheduled at Avenue25 in Subang Jaya, Avaland Show Village at Cybersouth and Lakefront Cyberjaya in the months ahead.
The programme provides comprehensive health checks, including BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and urine tests, alongside private consultations to support the early detection of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
As part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility efforts, Avaland has strengthened its partnership with NKF by donating 10 additional advanced vital signs monitoring devices - bringing its total contribution to 20 units.
These devices, equipped with ECG and oxygen saturation (SpO₂) monitoring, have been deployed to NKF dialysis centres nationwide, including those in Penang, Kedah, Perak, Johor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak; extending beyond the initial Klang Valley focus.

Avaland chief executive officer Apollo Bello Tanco (Pol) reaffirmed Avaland's dedication to community well-being. 'We are happy to extend our support to NKF dialysis centres nationwide. Enhancing access to real-time health monitoring is a critical step in delivering quality care to kidney patients.
'Through our collaboration with NKF, we aim to continually empower communities to take charge of their health. Early detection and preventive care are essential, especially for non-communicable diseases that often show no symptoms until it's too late.
'By offering complimentary screenings, we hope to raise awareness, encourage healthier lifestyles and reduce the impact of preventable diseases,' Pol added, reinforcing the programme's purpose.
NKF Malaysia chief executive officer Choo Kok Ming said, 'Avaland is not only helping us enhance patient care through these much-needed devices but also actively promoting early detection and health education through community screenings.
'Their commitment goes beyond financial support - it reflects a sincere concern for the health and well-being of Malaysians, regardless of region.'
Avaland remains steadfast in its commitment to embedding ESG principles into every aspect of its developments, with a strong focus on community well-being. By prioritising initiatives that enhance the lives of current and future generations, Avaland strives to create meaningful, lasting impact that transcends its physical developments.

Queen Visits Hospis Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, today visited Hospis Malaysia, a charitable organisation that provides palliative care to patients suffering from chronic illnesses, such as cancer and kidney problems. The visit was a specially arranged event in conjunction with the official birthday of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia. During the visit, Raja Zarith Sofiah spent more than two hours meeting patients receiving treatment at the centre, in addition to donating RM30,000 to Hospis Malaysia. Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is Bandar Tun Razak Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister of Health Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Health Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Suriani Ahmad and Hospis Malaysia chief executive officer Ednin Hamzah. Meanwhile, in her speech, Raja Zarith Sofiah said that she decided to visit Hospis Malaysia because she felt that there were still many Malaysians not aware of the importance of palliative care for family members. 'Hospis Malaysia can help provide palliative care, which is supportive care for patients with chronic illnesses. 'The responsibility of doctors and nurses at Hospis Malaysia is to provide advice and support to patients and their families, such as visiting and treating patients at home and to ease the patient's pain with effective medications,' said Her Majesty. Raja Zarith Sofiah said she became aware of palliative care since the late 1990s when the Johor Bahru Rotary Club often organised visits to homes of chronic patients, prompting Her Majesty to also become a volunteer and visit the patients at their homes. "Whenever there are seminars on palliative care, I will attend those seminars, and that was when I met Dr Ednin and palliative specialists from other countries," said Her Majesty.

Held at Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (Thoneh), the event featured free eye screenings too. There were also public education activities to promote early detection and improve access to eyecare for underprivileged communities. The carnival was launched by Health (research and technical support) Ministry deputy director-general Datuk Dr Nor Fariza Ngah, Thoneh chairman Tengku Tan Sri Azlan Sultan Abu Bakar and chief executive officer Datuk Michael Goh. Dr Nor Fariza said early intervention was important to address avoidable blindness and reduce long-term health burden. 'Good vision is more than a health issue, it is a gateway to opportunity and independence,' she said. 'Early detection and timely treatment can reduce the risk of irreversible vision loss. The event was held at the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital. 'This is why screening is so important as many patients do not realise they are losing sight until it is too late,' she added. The event was held in collaboration with Hospital Ampang, Hospital Serdang and Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Klang. Tengku Azlan said the effort symbolised what could be achieved through strong public-private collaboration. 'Our commitment to outreach and preventive care is ongoing as this is more than a one-off initiative. 'We believe eyecare should not be a luxury, but a basic right. 'Our work continues through long-term outreach efforts,' he added. Tengku Azlan said the public and private sectors came together at this event with a common purpose. 'Our commitment to outreach and preventive care is ongoing,' he assured. Goh said that beyond the carnival, efforts to reach rural and remote communities continued through mobile eye clinics, which have delivered essential services to populations lacking access to specialised care. 'Through our mobile eye clinics, we have traveled to rural and remote communities to provide essential eye care to those who cannot travel to us. 'We plan to expand these services with innovations like teleophthalmology, so that every Malaysian has access to quality vision care regardless of location.' Goh said free eye screenings and education campaigns would continue to be delivered through Thoneh's outreach programmes in collaboration with public hospitals and community clinics nationwide.

Anwar shares royal compliment on Malaysia's medical expertise

PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah praised the quality and expertise of doctors at the National Heart Institute (IJN) after receiving treatment there. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed this during the Higher Education Ministry's Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum titled "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport." "His Majesty told me that, as someone with exposure to and experience with some of the world's best medical centres, he was very satisfied with the quality of service, excellence, and expertise of our doctors at IJN," he said. Anwar added that while the government welcomes criticism, Malaysians should also recognise national achievements, especially in healthcare. "So while we allow criticism, which is not a problem, we must also recognise the strengths we have, and there must be the drive to push ourselves to do better," he said. The Sultan of Brunei was in Kuala Lumpur for the 46th Asean Summit with other regional leaders. On May 27, he was reportedly feeling fatigued and was advised by health experts to rest at IJN. Anwar also spoke about his conversation with President of Guinea-Bissau General Umaro Sissoco Embaló, during which he asked why Malaysia was chosen despite limited bilateral trade. "His answer was that he follows developments here and sees Malaysia as a country on the rise, with significant potential. That's why he chose to come," he said. Embaló arrived today for a three-day visit—his first since taking office as president in February 2020. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysian exports amounting to RM4.04 million and imports standing at RM0.06 million.
