Intel follows Microsoft with 5,000+ layoffs in one of July's biggest tech job cuts
Several reports seem to be suggesting that Intel is gearing up to lay off over 5,000 employees across four states in the US. While Intel has not made any official announcement, the genesis of the news seems to be the company's recently updated Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filings.
Reportedly, the company doubled its layoffs in California's Santa Clara and Folsom which seems to have impacted 1,935 employees. Reportedly, the job cuts began on July 11 in Folsom, and Santa Clara on July 15. The job cuts at Intel are reportedly going to affect more workers in Oregon, Texas, and Arizona.
Layoffs are just not limited to the US, several other reports suggest that Intel is also laying off hundreds of its staff from Israel, especially those working at its Kiryat Gat campus.
According to reports, Intel has also changed its layoff estimates in other parts of the US. The company sacked 2,392 people in Hillsboro, Oregon, and 696 in Chandler, Arizona. Earlier this month, explaining its spate of layoffs, Intel reportedly said that it was taking steps to become 'leaner, faster, and more efficient'. The purported mail said that Intel was working towards removing organisational complexity and empowering its engineers to better serve the needs of customers.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Microsoft was slashing close to four per cent of its global workforce. On July 2, Microsoft said that it was axing 9,000 jobs from across the team impacting professionals of all levels of experience. The company' spokesperson said that Microsoft will continue to implement organisational changes needed to best position the company and its teams for success. So far, Microsoft has been laying off its staff sporadically. In January, the company said that it was planning to slash one per cent of its staff based performance.
In May this year, Microsoft cut 6,000 jobs and an additional 300 in June. This is the company's second biggest layoff in recent times. In 2023, it laid off 10,000 employees and nearly 18,000 in 2014. All of these layoffs show how Microsoft is making efforts towards reducing its headcounts.

After Aerospace, Quantum Computing Tussle Erupts Between Andhra Pradesh And Karnataka
Bengaluru: The two neighbouring states and the governments are at it once again. The competitive spirit between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka has now spilled into the realm of quantum technology, with a fresh war of words erupting between the two neighbours over the title of hosting India's first homegrown quantum computer. On July 25, Andhra Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu took to social media platform X to announce that Amaravati would soon deploy "India's first indigenously built 8-qubit quantum computer" by November, in collaboration with Bengaluru-based firm QpiAI and under the aegis of the National Quantum Mission. "Andhra Pradesh is set to deploy India's first indigenously built 8-qubit quantum computer this November in Amaravati, with support from QpiAI. This initiative, backed by the National Quantum Mission, aims to transform agriculture, water management, and healthcare," Mr Naidu had said in the social media post. Mr Boseraju clarified that the first homegrown quantum computer by QpiAI has been operational in Bengaluru since April. "For the record: India's first Quantum computer built indigenously by QpiAI right here in Bengaluru, Karnataka began its commercial operations in April 2025. Let us stay rooted in facts and truth while celebrating progress," Mr Boseraju said. Just a few days ago, minister Nara Lokesh had invited aerospace industries to invest in Andhra after the Karnataka government had to call off land acquisition in Devanahalli following protests by local farmer groups. "Dear Aerospace industry, sorry to hear about this. I have a better idea for you. Why don't you look at Andhra Pradesh instead? We have an attractive aerospace policy for you, with best-in-class incentives and over 8000 acres of ready-to-use land (just outside Bengaluru)! Hope to see you soon to talk across the table," he had said. This was countered by several ministers in Karnataka who defended how the state has a ready ecosystem for aerospace industries. "This is not just about land, this is an entire ecosystem that we provide, that's why top companies like Boeing, Lockheed Martin etc prefer Bengaluru. If not Devanahalli, we will provide land elsewhere. I want to tell Nara Lokesh, he is looking to fish in troubled waters, but we will protect our interests," Industries Minister MB Patil had told NDTV.

Plan to develop Lucknow as India's 1st AI City gets ₹10,732-crore push
The state capital has received a corpus of ₹10,732 crore for developing the AI ecosystem under the IndiaAI Mission approved in March 2024. The move comes at a time when plans are afoot to develop Lucknow as the country's first AI City. According to the state government, this investment is 67% higher than any other technology infrastructure in the country. (FOR REPRESENTATION) The initiative is part of a major push to develop Uttar Pradesh as the new IT destination. The proposed investment is meant for 10,000 Graphics Processing Units, multi-modal language models and an AI innovation center. The state government will soon come up with the draft AI policy in line with Vision 2047. According to the state government, this investment is 67% higher than any other technology infrastructure in the country. Apart from this, a high-tech AI-based traffic management system is being proposed for Lucknow. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency, Varanasi, is already in the process of implementing an AI-enabled smart traffic system. Under the state government's flagship initiative, AI Pragya, over 10 lakh youths, teachers, gram pradhans, government employees, and farmers are being trained in AI, machine learning, data analytics and cybersecurity in partnership with tech giants like Microsoft, Intel, Google, and Guvi. The state government aims to train 1.5 lakh people every month, with industry-ready certifications part of the programme. AI-powered systems such as CCTV surveillance, facial recognition, number plate tracking, and SOS alert systems have been implemented in 17 municipal corporations and Gautam Buddh Nagar. These are directly integrated with the 112 helpline and police control rooms. Additionally, the 'Jarvis' AI monitoring system is active in 70 prisons, ensuring 24x7 surveillance of inmates. Under the UP Agris Project, 10 lakh farmers are being connected to AI-based technologies such as smart irrigation, drone mapping, pest detection, and digital market access. The initiative also involves 10,000 women's self-help groups as active partners. In the revenue department, satellite imaging and AI algorithms are being used for land consolidation and record management. This has enabled accurate digital mapping, transparent land distribution, and reduction of disputes. To protect mineral resources, 57 unmanned AI enabled check gates have been set up across 25 districts. Illegal mining is being monitored using RFID tags, geofencing, and AI camera-equipped weighbridges. In the healthcare sector, the country's first AI-based breast cancer screening centre has been established in Fatehpur, according to the state government.
