League of Ireland: Shels trail against Waterford – follow all the action as it happens
Live |
It's another action-packed evening in the League of Ireland with all ten Premier Division teams involved.
You can follow all the action as it unfolds in our liveblog below.
Key updates
The Tribesmen in the ascendancy before the break! Galway United 1 - Bohemians 0 I mean was it really going to be anyone else?! Bohs will have nightmares about Moses Dyer once again it appears as the New Zealander rounds off a period of sustained pressure with a goal in the 44th-minute. Rob Slevin collected a throw-in, took a touch to get it out of his feet and whip a ball into the box where Dyer prodded it past Chorazka from about 6 yards. John Caulfield's men had been knocking on the door prior to that as Cillian Tollett went close with a header from a delightful Dave Hurley cross.
Drogheda claw themselves level! Drogheda United 1 - Cork City 1 Exactly five minutes out from the break and Kevin Doherty's injury-hit Drogs are back on equal footing with Cork City. It's all a bit lucky from a Drogheda perspective but fans in Sullivan & Lambe Park don't care one jot about how it goes in once it's a goal. Shane Farrell attempts to curl his free-kick around the wall. Instead it deflects off a Cork body and completely wrong-foots Tein Troost before nesting in the net.
The Rebels lead at Sullivan & Lambe Park! Drogheda United 0 - Cork City 1 Yet another early goal to start Matchday 14 and it's come from Cork's Djenairo Daniels with a sweet strike on 7 minutes that found it's way to the net via the underside of the crossbar. Kitt Nelson led the charge down the left flank and although Drogheda half-defended his low cross, it fell nicely for Daniels to thump home from close range in the end.
A fast start for the Blues! Shelbourne 0 - Waterford 1 Less than three minutes gone and Waterford have the lead away to the champions, a free kick by Conan Noonan, a header from Padraig Amond and keeper Conor Kearns was very sluggish with his save. - Aidan Fitzmaurice with the latest from Tolka Park.
League of Ireland Premier Division: (kick-off 5pm unless stated) (57 mins)

Shelbourne 0 - Waterford 1
Shamrock Rovers - Sligo Rovers (7pm)
Derry City - St.Patrick's Athletic (7.45pm)

Back for the second-half in all three fixtures and Aidan Fitzmaurice has another Shels substitution to report:
And we have a third change from the champions, James Norris replaced at the break by Tyreke Wilson, a big 45 minutes ahead for Shels.

Aidan Fitzmaurice shares his thoughts on an interesting first-half of action in Drumcondra:
Half-time in Tolka Park and Damien Duff sprints to the dressing room, presumably to get a start on his team talk as the Reds are still 1-0 behind to Waterford.
Shels had enough chances with their dominance in the last 20 minutes of the half, sub John Martin denied a goal by a superb save from Stephen McMullan, there's a feeling that a goal will come for the champions but they are not enjoying their Bank Holiday so far.
Can Waterford make it two wins from two Dublin trips in four days?
Half-time across all three early kick-off's so we will be back for the second-half very shortly:
All square between Drogheda and Cork, while Galway and Waterford enjoy taking a slender lead into the dressing rooms at the break.

Duffer isn't happy as Aidan Fitzmaurice gets the birds-eye view from Tolka Park:
Damien Duff using a break in play here, for treatment on Waterford keeper Stephen McMullan, to give a very fiery team talk to his players who are 1-0 down.
No waiting around from Damien Duff this afternoon as Aidan Fitzmaurice notes:
Big call here in Tolka Park from the Shelbourne staff as Damien Duff makes two changes on 33 minutes, Ellis Chapman and JJ Lunney taken off - not for injury reasons - with Ali Coote and John Martin brought on.
Shels are having a good spell of possession now but have not caused Stephen McMullan too much bother, Mipo Odubeko should have at least hit the target earlier.
It's currently still Galway United 0 - Bohemians 0 as we approach the half-hour mark:
Nothing to separate the teams in Eamonn Deacy Park thus far, but the Tribesmen have looked the likelier side to score.
The best chance of the match fell to John Caulfield's team in the 25th-minute as Dave Hurley watched his effort get tipped onto the crossbar and behind for a corner by Kacper Chorazka.
Aidan Fitzmaurice with the latest from Tolka Park:
It's taken until the 19th minute but there is finally a response from Shelbourne to the fact they are a goal down, Ellis Chapman took up a good position and struck a fierce shot which was only kept out by a fingertip save from Waterford keeper Stephen McMullan, so Shels are still 1-0 down and the Blues are more than comfortable.

An injury-hit Drogheda host Cork City this afternoon:
At Sullivan & Lambe Park today it's a meeting of two sides who have played out a few draws of late, Drogheda United at home to Cork City.
There's a significant piece of team news from the home side as goalkeeper Luke Dennison and March player of the month Darragh Markey are not in the Drogheda squad which comes as a considerable blow.
That's three of six changes to the XI from Kevin Doherty's side in Dennison, Markey and Paul Doyle that are injury-related, but the other trio of alterations seem to be tactical.
Cork hand a first start of the season to Harry Nevin, after he made his comeback from injury as a sub in Friday's draw at home to Shamrock Rovers.
The latest from a sunny Eamonn Deacy Park:
Bohemians are in Galway and aiming to keep up their form at Eamon Deacy Park but with just one clean sheet in the last eight games, their defending is a concern.
Alan Reynolds has moved things around for his team, three changes to the side that lost at home to Waterford, so no place for Rob Cornwall, Colm Whelan or Keith Buckley.
Galway have also freshened up their side, a first start of the season for a fit-again Conor McCormack after two sub appearances while Colm Horgan also comes into the XI, no Cian Byrne for United as he is ineligible under the terms of his loan from Bohs.
Aidan Fitzmaurice is in Drumcondra this evening as Shels take on Waterford:
Hello from a sunny Tolka Park where it's the away side, Waterford, who are the form team, off the back of Friday's 2-1 win away to another Dublin side (Bohemians) and the home club who are struggling for form, Shelbourne with a run of one win in six games.
Newly-appointed Waterford boss John Coleman is in the ground but caretaker Matt Lawlor is in charge for the last time. He's clearly happy with his boys as the Blues are unchanged from the side that beat Bohs.
Shels make two changes. Mark Coyle is free from suspension and reclaims his place in the team, Harry Wood also in as Sam Bone and Ali Coote drop to the bench

'There is a line... you know what you can play through and what you can't'
EARLY JUNE AND credit to the League of Ireland for being prepared to pause for breath and allow its players a chance to recharge. The final stages of the Nations League take place in Germany over the next week, before FIFA's expanded Club World Cup kicks off on 15 June in the United States. So, no time for beaten Champions League finalists Inter Milan to dwell on that sobering 5-0 defeat to PSG as they will be back in action. An Irishman will also feature on that opening weekend when Kildare native Dylan Connolly turns out for New Zealand's fully amateur outfit Auckland City against European royalty Bayern Munich. This month will be filled with games before the final in New Jersey on 13 July; a date sandwiched between both legs of Shelbourne's Champions League first-round qualifying tie. By that point, Premier League clubs will also be back in pre-season action ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and, just six days after the Club World Cup final, Manchester United will play Leeds United in a friendly in Stockholm. On and on it goes, as seasons blend into one. The Republic of Ireland, of course, have two friendlies of their own over the next week as preparations continue for a condensed World Cup qualifying campaign that means September through to November is make or break for manager Heimir Hallgrímsson. He opted to leave out the majority of his Championship players from this squad so they could have the benefit of longer holidays this summer before – as the Ireland boss put it – they spent next year on duty at the World Cup. Someone who has been able to take time to relax on a couch is John Egan, who was a guest on a special live show for the Second Captains podcast in Cork last week. The 32-year-old still harbours ambition to play a role in those qualifiers in the autumn after rebuilding fitness and form over the last nine months with Burnley and Hull City. Advertisement An achilles injury in September 2023 brought a premature end to Egan's Premier League career as well as his time at Sheffield United, a club he helped earn promotion to England's top flight on two occasions. He explained on Second Captains how he went into a match with West Ham with injuries to his ankle and knee but didn't want to pull out of the starting XI as it had been a tough start to the season. 'When you're carrying an injury, it affects the rest of your body if you keep playing. That's advice I'll give to any young fellas or any people with young kids, going forward mind your body because you know you get an injury somewhere, it could be affecting you somewhere else,' he said. 'It cost me the rest of the season, probably cost me the rest of my Sheffield United career, which was sad. Yeah, I think it's (playing while injured) definitely an Irish thing. You kind of feel embarrassed if you don't train or you don't play, you know? That's how I felt anyway, and then you get the Europeans coming in and they've a little knock, they don't play and you think 'come on, man, just play', [but] they're going to be still playing when they're 40, if they want. 'I've learned the hard way. If I could go back I wouldn't play that game. I'd wait until I was right or until I had a two or three-year contract behind me. That's the be all and end all.' Those words, combined with a further elongation of the club and country calendar, seemed all the more prescient when Jason Knight was put up as the Ireland player on media duty yesterday. Now captain at Bristol City and still only 24-years-old, he played every minute of his side's 46-game regular campaign as well as the defeat over two legs to Sheffield United in the play-offs. That's even more impressive when you consider he was coming off the back of the 2023/24 season when he also played 3,848 minutes of 4,140 available. Jason Knight with John O'Shea (background). Tom Maher / INPHO Tom Maher / INPHO / INPHO Knight did manage a two-week break before joining the squad – Preston's Robbie Brady the other Championship player required for duty – and accepts it's hard to argue with Egan's regrets. 'John is probably right. There is a line and as you get older you get more experienced and you know what you can play through and what you can't,' he said. 'There's always knocks and niggles you can get through but I have been fortunate to get through the season without hurting myself too badly so a bit of luck as well. You can always get through a certain pain barrier and get on to the pitch.' That posed an obvious question: what is the line for you? 'If the leg isn't off, I suppose,' Knight said. John O'Shea, Ireland's assistant head coach, was sitting alongside the midfielder at the press conference and expanded on the kind of attitude and application that makes Knight so important. 'He is naturally leading now, vocally but also performance and intensity-wise. If we are doing a drill in training, you know if Knighty is involved in it that it is going to take care of itself and that is brilliant for a coaching staff, to have that and to see that reliability. 'It's also a trust to know what he is going to produce for the team as well. He has grown into the role for club and country. I'm sure there's lots of people looking at him and I'm sure Bristol City are very happy with him too. 'There's always that element of him being new school and old school, but it is a good school that he is from. Hopefully it continues.' Interest from other clubs for Knight is not at a stage where any transfer could be imminent. 'It's been a bit quiet for the last couple of weeks,' he said. Things move quickly in football and Knight knows that. 'I want to be ambitious. I want to play in the top division. But I'm relaxed, if it's now or in the future, that will be. I've just got to keep performing well to get to that point.' And if that means another summer still on the clock at the biggest show of all next summer then so be it.

Family support makes Saoirse Noonan's homecoming extra 'special'
It took Saoirse Noonan just 19 minutes into her first competitive start to register her second goal for the Republic of Ireland. But while her maiden strike against Georgia back in November 2021 meant the world to her, this finish arguably meant more to the Cork native. This time as she wheeled away in celebration after seeing her bullet header from close-range hit the roof of the net, she did so in front of her home fans, almost 10,000 of them that had packed into Páirc Uí Chaoimh. And this time, rather than the finish coming late on a 9-0 hammering, it proved to be the only goal, although that would also come as a disappointment given the fact Ireland needed to win by four or more to snatch an automatic place in League A from their opponents Slovenia. But for Noonan, and her family, the goal will forever be remembered. 'I knew they were up above in that stand, so it was really special,' began the former Douglas Hall, Cork City and Shelbourne forward, who had already played here with the Cork Ladies Footballers and scored here during her Sciath na Scol days. Read More Ireland head into Uefa Nations League playoffs despite Leeside win 'My grandad would've been a proud man tonight. He's at every game. And my granny, this is the first time she has seen me play senior, so it was emotional, it meant a lot to me. 'Being in Cork was enough motivation in itself, wearing the Irish jersey as well was enough motivation, I didn't need anything else, but it (her family watching) does add that little bit of grit. 'Coming back wearing a different shirt, it's the same feeling, you're representing something you are really proud of, so it was phenomenal. 'It was a bit surreal. Obviously it was my first competitive start so first I was just trying to find my feet, ease my way into the game and not get caught up in the moment. It's unbelievable, I'm absolutely delighted. Carla called out the team last night so when I got the nod, I just told my parents and asked them to keep it quiet and just try to treat it like any other game. But, yeah, what a feeling. When it went in and hit off my head, I just saw it dipping and yeah, I don't even know how I celebrated or anything. I just had a little moment, took a deep breath and then switched my focus because we wanted to get that next goal quick. When we got that goal, I think we thought 'we have a 1-0 lead, let's see if we can get another one before half time, that was the focus. 'We were pushing, we were unlucky and maybe there were one or two little decisions that we could have made better but it's about building, this team is good and we're working hard every day and we're growing. 'You can see the growth from the first time Carla came in until now, even for myself, I just feel each camp and each day, it feels like we are getting better and this something to build on now going forward. 'Obviously we want to be happy we won but you still have that in the back of your mind that we didn't top the group and they're off celebrating because they did. We have to be proud of ourselves, it's still a win, it's still international level and wins don't come around that easy. 'I have to thank Carla (Ward) for bringing me back and giving me minutes, leaving me keep going with confidence. 'When I got the nod to play, I felt like I owed it to the staff, they have so much belief in me, so I'm delighted. We got the win, but obviously we wanted to score four goals and top the group as well.' Ireland Playoff picture The four teams finishing third in the League A groups will play off with the four League B group runners-up over two legs. The winners will play in League A for the European Qualifiers phase for the 2027 Fifa Women's World Cup; the defeated teams will play in League B. The draw takes place on Friday. All ties will be played between October 22 to 28. League A third-place teams: Austria (Fifa ranking: 18), Iceland (13), Belgium (20) and Denmark (12). League B second-place teams: Republic of Ireland (26), Northern Ireland (44), Finland (25), Czechia (30).

Dundalk FC crowned League of Ireland Cairdeas Cup Champions
Hundreds of fans including parents, families and friends attended the National Indoor Sports Centre in Abbotstown to see 120 players, representing 12 League of Ireland clubs who had been preparing for this festival since last year's inaugural event. The improvement in the players since last year's event was clearly evident with all matches very keenly contested. LOI Clubs from all over the country were represented including Bohemians, Bray Wanderers, Cork City, Derry City, Drogheda United, Dundalk, Finn Harps, Shelbourne, Sligo Rovers, St Patrick's Athletic, Waterford and Wexford. The red-hot favourite to retain the title was Finn Harps who had been victorious in last year's Cairdeas Cup festival. However, a resilient Dundalk FC team emerged as winners following a thrilling final. Every player, coach, official and volunteer who participated in the festival can be proud of their valuable contribution on the day. The LOI Down Syndrome programme has gone from strength to strength with LOI Clubs providing opportunities for regular training with the players and support to participate in the festival. Last year's inaugural event saw nine LOI clubs represented which has now grown to 12 and is expected to continue growing as clubs continue to embrace a wider role in their local communities. Many of the clubs Football & Social Responsibility Officers were in attendance providing support for the players and families and linking in with brilliant volunteers to make the whole day a remarkable success. 'It's days like this that restores your faith in the purpose of football and how it can positively impact people's lives,' said League of Ireland Football & Social Responsibility Manager, Derek O'Neill. "The LOI clubs participating should be proud of the players and also proud of the inclusive opportunity they have provided to grow the game in their communities and facilitate participation among a wide range of groups from children to older people and people with disabilities. It's another reason why football is referred to as the beautiful game'. The Cairdeas Cup is a collaborative project between the League of Ireland and the FAI Football for All programme and has been shortlisted for the Irish Sports Industry Best Initiative to Promote Inclusivity in Sport & Physical Activity.
