IPO exits may take a hit amid slowdown

Time of India07-05-2025

Mumbai:
With some companies looking to delay their public listings amid a choppy market, investor exits through IPOs are likely to take a hit this year after recording a big jump in 2024, a joint report by Bain & Company and IVCA (Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association) said, hinting at a slowdown in broader PE-VC ( private equity and venture capital ) deal activity amid tariff-feuled global uncertainty. "...corrections in Indian public markets since Q4 2024 could potentially temper the IPO exit momentum," analysts said. The value of IPO exits more than doubled to nearly $4 billion in 2024 from $1.8 billion in 2023 as more firms went public last year, riding on a buoyant market, giving investors enough opportunity to cash out.The number of IPO filings so far this year has been lower compared to the same period last year and for companies facing pressure from investors to give them an exit, reduction in issue size and valuation readjustments are on the table as bigger IPOs may not sail through in a volatile market. "From an LP (limited partner) perspective, the exit is a very important path for them to be able to get liquidity. LPs are not seeing the kind of cash they would like to, and for certain funds, there's no choice but to go ahead and seek an exit. Some companies hence are looking at cutting the issue size and tempering IPO valuations," Prabhav Kashyap, partner at Bain & Company told TOI.After a bull run last year, activity in India's IPO market has slowed, with companies like LG Electronics delaying listing plans for its India unit.On Tuesday, EV startup Ather Energy fell nearly 6% from its issue price following a muted listing. Urban Company, which recently filed draft IPO papers, slashed the size of its IPO to Rs 1,900 crore from the earlier targeted Rs 3,000 crore, with the offer for sale (OFS) component that gives exit to investors forming the bulk of the issue.Overall, PE-VC investments rebounded in 2024 after two years of contraction. Investments increased by about 9% year-on-year to $43 billion, helped by growth in VC deals (in terms of volumes). The broader deal environment this year remains cautious, with investors betting more on companies that have higher exposure to local markets. "Deal activity is always impacted when there's any kind of uncertainty. In the case of sectors like manufacturing and pharmaceuticals, investors are assessing the potential impact from tariffs. There is a slowdown in overall investments. The big deals that have been announced this year were in the works and have only been closed now," Kashyap added.

India central to key supply chains; must be part of G7 discussions: Canadian PM Carney

India is the fifth largest economy in the world and it is central to a number of critical global supply chains, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said, arguing that the leadership of the country must be part of discussions at the upcoming G7 summit. Mr. Carney's comments came after some of his political opponents in Canada criticised him for inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit in view of a probe into allegations of Indian links to the killing of a Khalistani separatist in 2023. Also read | Will PM update his Canadian counterpart on India's economy status: Congress takes dig at PM Modi Prime Minister Modi accepted Mr. Carney's invitation to attend the G7 summit during a phone conversation on Friday. Canada is hosting the G7 summit in the Alberta province from June 15 to 17 in its capacity as the current chair of the grouping. To a specific question on the case of killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023, Carney told reporters that it is not appropriate for him to comment as the legal process in the case is underway. The Canadian Prime Minister said the G7 summit will deliberate on a range of key issues including energy security, digital future, critical minerals and on partnerships in building infrastructure in the emerging and developing world. Mr. Carney suggested that he extended the invitation to Mr. Modi after talking to other G7 member countries. "There are certain countries that should be at the table for those discussions," he said when asked why PM Modi was invited when there have been allegations of Indian links to the Nijjar case. "India is the fifth largest economy in the world; effectively the most populous country in the world. [It is] central to a number of those supply chains; [it is] at the heart of a number of those supply chains, so it makes sense," he said. Without elaborating, Mr. Carney noted that India and Canada have agreed to continue law enforcement dialogue. "Bilaterally, we have now agreed importantly to continue law enforcement dialogue. There has been some progress on issues of accountability," he said. Canada's NDP party slammed Mr. Carney for extending the invitation to Mr. Modi. "This decision is profoundly troubling," it said. The India-Canada relations hit rock bottom following then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations in 2023 of a potential Indian link to the killing of Nijjar. In October last year, India recalled its High Commissioner and five other diplomats after Ottawa attempted to link them to the Nijjar case. India also expelled an equal number of Canadian diplomats. However, Liberal Party leader Mr. Carney's victory in the parliamentary election in April triggered hopes for reset of the relationship. In the last few months, the security officials of India and Canada resumed contacts and both sides were looking at the possibility of appointing new high commissioners. India had accused Trudeau's government of allowing pro-Khalistani elements to operate from Canadian soil. After Trudeau's exit, New Delhi said it hoped to rebuild ties with Canada based on "mutual trust and sensitivity".

Man With Rs 20 Lakh Salary Can't Afford A Home In Gurugram, Viral Post Sparks Discussion

Owning a home remains a major aspiration for many, driven by the desire for stability and potential income. However, in recent years, surging property prices have pushed homeownership out of reach for many in major metro cities. Amid this, a social media post about a man earning Rs 20 lakh a year and still unable to afford a home in Gurugram has triggered a discussion about soaring real estate prices in Indian cities. Taking to X, a tech professional named Akhilesh claimed that if his friend, who is earning Rs 1.2 lakh a month, buys a house with proper amenities, he would end up living paycheck to paycheck. "Was having a discussion with a friend in Gurgaon. His CTC is 20 lakh. His in-hand is around 1.2 lakh per month after taxes, epf, and deductions. He doesn't splurge. No car. No kids. just a waifu," the techie wrote on X. "Every project he visits starts at 2.5 crore. The brochures talk about infinity pools, Zen gardens, Italian marble, biometric lifts. If he buys this, he has to live paycheck to paycheck. No buffer. No vacations. No emergencies," he added. was having a discussion with a friend in gurgaon. his ctc is 20 lakh. his in-hand is around 1.2 lakh per month after taxes, epf, and deductions. he doesn't splurge. no car. no kids. just a waifu. every project he visits starts at 2.5 crore. the brochures talk about infinity… — akhilesh (@akhileshutup) June 5, 2025 Further, the techie claimed that his friend probably earns more than 95% of India, but he still cannot afford a home in his own city. "The market is not broken. It's working exactly as designed - for someone else," he concluded. The post has gone viral on social media, sparking a discussion of soaring prices in Indian cities. "It's wild how even a high salary feels inadequate in certain cities. Many people are in the same boat, juggling expenses while trying to save. It makes you question what success means nowadays," wrote one user. "It is same story everywhere. In Hyd a Triplex villa outside ORR quotes min 2.5CR. There are villas bein sold for 9 CR, not sure what on earth these villas have. If one wants an apartment prices range from 1.5 to 3CR basis location. Buying a home in not a common man's dream any more. Real estate market is completely in the hands of black money hoarders," commented another. "Gurgaon has brand new flats strating from as low as 65 lacs for 2BHK. Humans are aspiring high with shallow pockets,' expressed a third user. "With this money he can go to his ancestral home(most probably in a village), he can built a lutyen bungalow there with this much money. Clean air, clean water, Grandeur home, social life,Stick with the cultural roots, better health, there are countless benefits," suggested another. "Not just your friend, even ppl whose CTC is 50lakh couldn't afford to buy apartments, forget about villas. For a low per capita country like India the real estate prices are in sky. Yet every project is sold out in pre-launch. Who & how they are buying is a mystery," commented one user.
