Barry McGuigan reflects on an 'incredible night' 40 years on from Pedrosa fight
Set against the backdrop of the Troubles, the Clones man was a beacon of hope during perilous times, and his world title victory was a moment that defined a boxing era.
McGuigan, 64, told BBC Sport: "Those sort of vivid memories are so burned into your brain that you'll never forget.
"Winning the world title against Pedroza, having an audience of almost 19 million people. Winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year, the year that Dennis Taylor won the snooker. It was an amazing year for sport, and yet there were lots of tragedies and people dying here because of the Troubles.
"Walking to the ring took us 12 minutes to walk 60 yards because the fans were so fanatical.
"Then Pedroza came out to some sort of Spanish music, and he took him all of 25, 30 seconds to go from the away dugout dressing room to the ring as opposed to mine.
"But it was the fanatical support that we had. You know, we reckon 14,000 people travelled over from Dublin and Belfast and Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland.
"It was an incredible night. It just fizzed and the old man got in and sang Danny Boy and everybody sang it back, and then the bell went, and off we went and it was flat out."
After many defences of his European featherweight title, McGuigan finally got a shot at the world belt.
But he was taking on a boxer who had held the world title for seven years, defending it against 18 different fighters.
"I knew I had to pressurise him because technically he was much better than me," McGuigan said. "I had to beat him with pace and pressure, and I just was on him from the start, putting him back, backing him up, making him fight at a pace that was uncomfortable for him.
"And that's how you take away their technique advantage, just being on them non-stop, and that was my style.
"Then whacking the body when I could, and then the round that changed it all was round seven, bang, down.
"Suddenly everything went bonkers. The noise was deafening. Stanley Christodoulou was the South African referee, and he was looking around for me. I ran to the neutral corner immediately because I knew I'd hurt him, and then he counted him and then waved us on
."I came in and I went, I'm going to throw a right hook at him. And I went left side, right side, left side, and I swung, and he just went, shh. I went whizzing past him, missed him by about that much.
"But that told me that he wasn't that badly hurt. So I knew at that stage, you know, he was very alert and he was stunned, but he was still very compos mentis.
"I tried a right hook and I chased him back, hit him with a couple of left hands, but I never hit him with that right hand again in that round.
"Then I had him in real trouble in the 9th round, and then he was out on his feet in the 13th. Legs went, but again, he was a formidable champion. He just stayed in there to the end of the 15 rounds.
"But that night I was on such a high, I could have fought 20 rounds. I was just so up for the fight. I was so emotionally fired up for it."

Sligo Rovers v Shelbourne: 'We have our eyes on a good result'
John Russell insists Sligo Rovers won't be lulled into a false sense of security against Shelbourne on Saturday night. The League of Ireland champions are just back from Azerbaijan where they bowed out of the Champions League to Qarabag on Wednesday. Joey O'Brien's men lost 1-0 on the night in Baku, and 4-0 on aggregate, and will soon be travelling to Croatia to play Rijeka on Wednesday. But even if Shels are tired from their exertions, and have one eye on next week's high stakes Europa League mission, Russell doubts the Reds will be complacent tonight. If you're curious, you can read our Privacy Notice . Not with O'Brien reminding his team in Baku that they need to get their act together in the league to ensure they have European nights to savour next season. Bit O'Red boss Russell said: 'They had a tough two games against Qarabag, but I'm sure they learned loads. Yes, they had to travel but they have a big squad that's more than capable of dealing with the rotation required. 'They'll look to come here and get back on track. It's going to be a tough game for us against Shels. We're playing the current champions and that always means a big test but we're all looking forward to another game in front of our fans. 'We're in good form and we have our eyes on a good result at the Showgrounds.' Sligo Rovers have made some impressive signings in this summer window, and are already feeling the benefits as they try to dodge the relegation playoff. Ciaron Harkin arrived from Derry City this week and is the sixth new face after Patrick McClean, Seb Quirk, Ryan O'Kane, James McManus and Sean Stewart. Sligo Rovers manager John Russell (Image: INPHO/Bryan Keane) O'Kane - who scored the last minute winner in last week's thrilling 3-2 win away to Cork City - is unavailable tonight due to the terms of his loan deal from Shelbourne. But Russell is excited by what Harkin can offer as the midfielder looks to rebuild his career after back-to-back ACL injuries. 'We're looking forward to seeing how Ciaron settles in and we've no doubt he'll be a big player for us,' said the Rovers boss in an interview on the club website. Jake Doyle-Hayes has left Sligo Rovers after joining Exeter City on a two-year deal while Francely Lomboto completed a move to Glenavon. 'We've had a bit of movement within the squad with both Jake and Francely moving on but that's happened here before and we move on also,' added Russell. Shelbourne boss O'Brien made eight changes to his side for Wednesday's test against Qarabag and will shake up his team again tonight. New signings Milan Mbeng and Sean Moore could play a part and O'Brien said: 'Sligo is the next game and it's the biggest game for us. If you want European nights again next year, and be playing at this level again, you have to take care of business in your league.' Finn Harps' foreign legion grows with addition of French forward
Finn Harps have made their sixth signing of the summer transfer window, with the arrival of French forward Ibrahima Pokou Bangoura. The 22-year-old has signed until the end of the 2025 season and was previously with French sixth tier side Sable FC. Hailing his latest piece of business, manager Kevin McHugh told club media: 'Ibrahima is a player who has come in and impressed myself and the coaching staff over the last couple of weeks. 'He's got a natural attacking instinct, great pace and is hungry to prove himself. 'He can play across the front three so gives us the opportunity to be versatile in how we set up and fits the mould of the kind of player we want in the squad. 'It will take time to settle into his new surroundings but we're hopeful he can contribute heading into the business end of the season.' Letterkenny native Oran Brogan was the first man to join in this window, having last played with Loughgall in the NIFL Premiership. St. Kitts and Nevis international Kieran Cooney then signed from Notts County, and he was quickly joined by Canadian winger Idir Zerrouk. Brazilian goalkeeper Lorenzo Piaia was next in the door in Ballybofey. Having played in his home country, he moved to Spanish side San Roque Lepe in 2024. Dutch forward Hans Mpongo signed in mid-July after spells in England, including Brentford B, Iceland, the Netherlands and Slovenia.
