SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Since its opening in 1977, The Empire Mall has always been one of the top places for Sioux Falls residents to get the latest fashion. However as Dennis Flanagan shows us in this week's Flashback Friday, back in 1982 the Empire Mall was much more than just a place for shopping.

You go to a mall to shop right? Well that isn't necessarily all. How about an art show? It provides an interesting way to spend an afternoon.Consider that about 20 years ago there was no such thing as the mall.Now consider them as places to gather almost social centers.Now consider what it would take to get someone to dance before a couple hundred people.The answer? A fashion show. How often can it be said I'm going to the mall to perform, perhaps more often than you'd think and for some it is a new experience.'Are you nervous?''Uh-huh''Describe what you're going to be doing.''Have to go out there and have to walk down the ramp and then have to do some poses and then I have to walk back and hopefully I won't trip.'Imagine modeling in front of so many people it does not necessarily come easily.'Its a robe and gown set out of a satin material, like a wedding night type of thing.''Are you nervous?''A little bit'How about aerobic dance for all the world to see?'I was talked into it actually because they said it didn't matter what you wore, so i could come in my own clothes, and age they wanted to know that older people could do this, and they also wanted to know its alright to forget the steps.'For others the public commitment to exercise comes a bit easier.'How much coaxing did it take to get you to come out here and dance in public?''Oh none, I love this dancing and I like performing.'Perhaps you thought that malls were just for shopping, well they have become a way of life.

The free concert starts at 7 p.m. with opening act Billy Lurken. The Fireworkz Store Pyrotechnic Musical is a benefit for Emily's Hope. Bring a lawn chair to the Tea Athletic Complex where the excitement begins at sunset. Your free-will offering will benefit Emily Hope's mission of ending the stigma of substance abuse disorder and providing prevention education. Gift & Thrift in Sioux Falls is hosting an Outdoor Flea Market featuring antiques and collectibles. The hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Buffalo Days in Luverne, MN include an Arts & Crafts Expo at the Rock County Courthouse Square from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A parade on Main Street starts at 10 a.m. A block party with live music and food goes from 6-9 p.m. Step Forward to Prevent Suicide is a 1.5 mile walk to benefit the Helpline Center's suicide prevention and awareness programs. The event gets underway at 9 a.m. in Fawick Park in Sioux Falls. Activities include a remembrance ceremony and a message from guest speaker Stefanie Kummer who lost her 16-year-old son, Alex to suicide. KELOLAND Living's Mitchell Olson is the guest emcee. The hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Travel back in time to the glorious reign of Queen Elizabeth I during the Siouxland Renaissance Festival at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. Premiere Playhouse holds Dolly Parton costume contest
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A Dolly Parton costume contest is taking place Friday, June 6, at the Premiere Playhouse (TPP) office from 5-8 p.m. in the Rock Island Plow building. New coffee shop already looking to the future Contestants are asked to show up in their best Dolly Parton costume, fill out a form, and have their photo taken to enter the contest, according to a Facebook post and press release. Those participating will have the chance to win a Season 23 Mainstage Subscription package, ride on the pride parade float, and be crowned 'Queen Dolly.' Voting will be done by TPP staff on June 9, and the top three Dolly's will be notified if they're advancing to the next round. These three winners will be invited to ride on the Playhouse's pride parade float on June 14. Crews respond to fire at Delux Motel on West 12th Street Online, the public can vote on who will win the title of 'Queen Dolly' from June 9 to 20, and the champion will be crowned on the Orpheum Theater stage, before the '9 to 5' show begins on June 21. Flashback Friday: Parading Pets around Phillips Avenue
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – We've been telling you about several different events over the month of June that'll get families out of the house and hitting the streets and parks all around Downtown Sioux Falls. Mitchell residents against Davison County prison site In this week's Flashback Friday, we're going all the way back to 1968 where Keloland's Bill Severtson shows us how a group of kids spent their summer Saturday morning parading their pets along Phillips Avenue. Some mighty unusual traffic moved the wrong way on a one way street in downtown Sioux falls this morning. The slow moving travelers included horses, dogs, cats, hamsters, a fox, and two geese, all in all about 75 assorted refugees from Noah's Ark. Accompanied by 100 young human type companions. It was the annual county pet parade sponsored by the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office and the Sioux Empire Kennel Club. Trophies were awarded Sammy Brett of Sioux Falls for the best decorated float and Richard Mathiesen of Renner for the child with a pet coming the longest distance. And Laurie Blount most unusual pet, a very friendly gray fox. Ribbons were given for just about every category imaginable and everybody went home convinced that their pet was the best in the whole wide world. Bill Severtson, KELOLAND News.
