Flashback Friday: Celebrating the unofficial start of summer

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) –Thousands of people are expected to celebrate the unofficial start to summer this weekend whether with a barbecue or by visiting a campground. In this week's Flashback Friday, Dennis Flanagan takes us back to 1982 to see how Sioux Falls residents were spending their memorial day weekends. This is the Lewis and Clark recreation area. It is filled to capacity this weekend like most other parks near a body of water. It doesn't take much imagination to remember what it was like only a few short months ago. Now the boats are out. They are being rigged, ready for a sail on the open waters of Lewis and Clark Lake. They come in all sizes and designs. With a chill factor of 80 below 0 last Winter, you didn't even think of going outside unless you had to. But as the seasons change, anything is possible, and a barbecue and a picnic are enjoyable in the outdoors. This Winter was one of the coldest on record and freezing to death in the outdoors was a reality. Now it is an effort to stay cool, and it is time to get out the Sun tan lotion and the fishing Pole and cast into the water hoping for the big one. At times last winter, nobody played outside, and where this Lake was frozen solid then… children play by its shores now. What more is there to say about summer recreation? Not much, except enjoy and maybe plan ahead. 'Right now our campgrounds are full, and my recommendation for people that are coming a great distance would be to call down here or have someone that they could call to check on the facilities. The busy weekends, your holiday weekends, you know if you don't get here before Friday it's gonna be pretty tough.' Dennis Flanagan, KELOLAND News, Yankton. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Flashback Friday: Going dancing at the Empire Mall

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Since its opening in 1977, The Empire Mall has always been one of the top places for Sioux Falls residents to get the latest fashion. However as Dennis Flanagan shows us in this week's Flashback Friday, back in 1982 the Empire Mall was much more than just a place for shopping. KELOLAND'S groundbreaking 1988 trip to Vietnam You go to a mall to shop right? Well that isn't necessarily all. How about an art show? It provides an interesting way to spend an that about 20 years ago there was no such thing as the consider them as places to gather almost social consider what it would take to get someone to dance before a couple hundred answer? A fashion show. How often can it be said I'm going to the mall to perform, perhaps more often than you'd think and for some it is a new experience.'Are you nervous?''Uh-huh''Describe what you're going to be doing.''Have to go out there and have to walk down the ramp and then have to do some poses and then I have to walk back and hopefully I won't trip.'Imagine modeling in front of so many people it does not necessarily come easily.'Its a robe and gown set out of a satin material, like a wedding night type of thing.''Are you nervous?''A little bit'How about aerobic dance for all the world to see?'I was talked into it actually because they said it didn't matter what you wore, so i could come in my own clothes, and age they wanted to know that older people could do this, and they also wanted to know its alright to forget the steps.'For others the public commitment to exercise comes a bit easier.'How much coaxing did it take to get you to come out here and dance in public?''Oh none, I love this dancing and I like performing.'Perhaps you thought that malls were just for shopping, well they have become a way of life.
