Flashback Friday: Celebrating the unofficial start of summer
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) –Thousands of people are expected to celebrate the unofficial start to summer this weekend whether with a barbecue or by visiting a campground. In this week's Flashback Friday, Dennis Flanagan takes us back to 1982 to see how Sioux Falls residents were spending their memorial day weekends.
This is the Lewis and Clark recreation area. It is filled to capacity this weekend like most other parks near a body of water. It doesn't take much imagination to remember what it was like only a few short months ago.
Now the boats are out. They are being rigged, ready for a sail on the open waters of Lewis and Clark Lake. They come in all sizes and designs. With a chill factor of 80 below 0 last Winter, you didn't even think of going outside unless you had to.
But as the seasons change, anything is possible, and a barbecue and a picnic are enjoyable in the outdoors.
This Winter was one of the coldest on record and freezing to death in the outdoors was a reality. Now it is an effort to stay cool, and it is time to get out the Sun tan lotion and the fishing Pole and cast into the water hoping for the big one.
At times last winter, nobody played outside, and where this Lake was frozen solid then… children play by its shores now. What more is there to say about summer recreation?
Not much, except enjoy and maybe plan ahead.
'Right now our campgrounds are full, and my recommendation for people that are coming a great distance would be to call down here or have someone that they could call to check on the facilities. The busy weekends, your holiday weekends, you know if you don't get here before Friday it's gonna be pretty tough.'

Hot and dry weather this weekend
Drier weather will continue to move into New Mexico into this weekend. Storm chances will still be possible Friday afternoon in far eastern New Mexico. That includes another threat of severe weather. Temperatures will continue a warming trend across the state Friday. On Saturday, only a spotty shower or two is likely in northeast New Mexico, but on Sunday, more isolated storms are possible in northern and eastern New Mexico. Temperatures will again continue to warm up through the weekend, with Sunday being the hottest day for most. More moisture will move into eastern New Mexico Monday, bringing a better chance for showers and thunderstorms up to the northern mountains as well. Outflow from those storms will push moisture as far west as the Continental Divide Tuesday morning. This will bring a more widespread chance for storms Tuesday afternoon. Rain ends, sun breaks out Saturday afternoon
We have a rainy start to Saturday as a cold front and low pressure system works through the region, but have no fear! The weekend does not look like a wash out! By afternoon our winds will begin to shift to the Northwest allowing for dry air to filter in from the west leaving us with a partly sunny finish to the day. There could be an isolated spot shower or two working southeast during the afternoon, otherwise temperatures climb to the middle and upper 70's. We are watching for some additional wildfire smoke to pass through the region, especially close to the ground, leaving to unhealthy air quality especially in the counties highlighted in gray!
