KOTA KINABALU, June 18 (Bernama) -- Two Sabah assemblymen and another individual are expected to be charged in court here this month in connection with a corruption scandal involving mineral mining licensing in the state.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the commission is in the process of completing its investigation, with all three suspects having been called to give their statements.
'They will be charged in court within this month, possibly by the end of the month. We are currently awaiting a date from the court,' he told reporters here today.
He said this when met by reporters after officiating the International Conference on Technology, Management and Sustainability (ICTMS 2025), organised by the Accounting Research Institute (ARI), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), here today.
When asked about the authenticity of viral videos linked to the scandal, Azam said that the MACC's investigation does not rely solely on video evidence.
He said that the matter could not be further commented on as it might be sub judice, adding that the evidence would be submitted to the public prosecutor for evaluation and brought to court if necessary.
He also stressed that the MACC's investigation considers various forms of evidence, including statements from individuals involved, to verify the authenticity of any audio-visual material.
Previously, several video recordings allegedly showing corruption-related conversations between certain individuals and several Sabah lawmakers related to mineral mining issue in the state went viral.

Special Meeting Soon To Decide Action On Online Drug Sales

GENERAL PUTRAJAYA, June 18 (Bernama) -- A special meeting will be convened soon to discuss measures to curb the online sale of illicit substances, including drug-laced vape liquids. MADANI Government spokesperson and Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the meeting will involve his ministry, the Ministry of Health (MOH), and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN). He said the outcome of the meeting would be presented to the Cabinet for further action, including enforcement against individuals selling illicit substances and the online platforms enabling such sales. 'This includes the sale of vape liquids believed to contain prohibited drugs via mobile applications and online platforms,' he added. 'This reflects the Cabinet's and the government's deep concern over the growing issue of prohibited products being widely sold online,' he said in a post-Cabinet meeting press conference today. Recently, public concern has been mounting over the presence of synthetic substances or drugs in vapes and e-cigarettes sold online. Several cases have also emerged linking the deaths of students to psychoactive substances, such as 'magic mushrooms', found in vape liquids. On June 5, Fahmi reportedly said that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had been instructed to monitor the sale of prohibited substances allegedly conducted via several social media platforms. Meanwhile, the MOH has set up a special committee to review existing legislation under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 to address the issue.

Online Safety Act Expected To Be Enforced Soon

PUTRAJAYA, June 18 (Bernama) -- The Online Safety Act 2024 is expected to be enforced soon after several key processes related to the legislation are finalised, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi, who is also MADANI Government spokesperson, said he is currently awaiting the draft of the Act from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), which includes the regulations to be adopted. 'Once the draft is ready and I sign the gazette to enforce the Act, then it will come into effect,' he said at his weekly press conference today. Fahmi said that a committee will also be set up by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, to oversee the implementation of the Act. 'This committee will have regulatory powers over the enforcement of the Act, such as defining what constitutes online harms,' he explained. Prior to this, Azalina said that the new law would come into force once the Communications Minister signs the enforcement order, enabling the government to act swiftly to remove illegal content. Under the Act, platform providers are also required to comply with specified duties of care. Azalina noted that while the Online Safety Act focuses on platform regulation and digital responsibilities, any issues involving children must be addressed within the framework of the Child Act 2001. In a related development, Fahmi said sign language interpreters will have increased involvement in key programmes to facilitate communication with persons with disabilities (PwD).
