Melaka teen charged with murdering mum, brother, injuring younger sibling
MELAKA (June 18): A 17-year-old boy is accused of killing his mother and biological elder brother, besides injuring his younger brother at the Ayer Keroh Magistrate's Court here today.
For the first and second charges, the teenager is accused of causing the death of his 51-year-old mother and 21-year-old biological brother at No 7, Jalan RM3, Taman Rambai Mutiara, in the Melaka Tengah district between 5 and 5.30am on June 12.
He is charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment for not less than 30 years but not more than 40 years, and if not sentenced to death, can be whipped not less than 12 strokes.
No plea was recorded from the accused when the charge was read out in Mandarin by the court interpreter as the murder charge falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
Meanwhile, for the third charge, the accused is charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to his 13-year-old younger brother by using a folding knife at the same location on the same date and time.
He is charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous bodily harm which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine or whipping.
The teenager, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Farah Nabihah Sofian while the accused was represented by lawyer Cassian Anthony, with no bail offered for all three charges.
Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani set July 24 for the case to be mentioned again.
On June 12, the media reported that a female teacher and her eldest child died while her youngest child was seriously injured, believed to have been stabbed by a teenage boy who was also the victim's second child at their home.
The incident is believed to have occurred at around 5am and the single mother and her son were found lying in a pool of blood in the living room.
Police arrested the suspect who was found outside the house in a daze at the time and the weapon, a 20cm folding knife with blood stains, believed to have been used in the incident, was found kept in a school bag outside the house. — Bernama family Melaka mother murder teen

Kuala Lumpur: The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) on Tuesday clarified that the prosecution of five minors in Zara Qairina Mahathir's case was made under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code because it is related to bullying only and not to the death of the 13-year-old girl. In a statement, Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar explained that the decision to charge the five teenagers under Section 507C(1) was based on a thorough review of the investigation papers. Advertisement 'Therefore, the AGC reiterates that the charge under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code in this case is grounded on evidence and facts obtained from the completed investigation,' the statement read. The clarification follows a press statement by the lawyers representing Noraida Lamat, the mother of the Zara Qairina, who had requested a postponement of the prosecution process and proposed that the teens be charged under Section 507D(2), which carries a heavier penalty. The AGC responded by stating that the argument raised by the lawyer, that if the teens plead guilty to the lesser charge, they could not later be charged under Section 507D(2) or a more serious offence due to the double jeopardy clause under Article 7(2) of the Federal Constitution, was speculative and not supported by concrete facts. The AGC also confirmed that an inquest will still proceed to determine the actual cause of Zara Qairina's death. On Monday, the AGC confirmed that the five minors will be charged in the Kota Kinabalu Juvenile Court under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, while the Kota Kinabalu Coroner's Court set Sept 3 to commence the inquest proceedings into Zara Qairina's death. Zara Qairina died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17, after being found unconscious in a drain near the school dormitory on the morning of July 16 in Papar. Meanwhile, Dusuki said the proposed charge against five teenagers will not affect the inquest into her death. 'If the coroner finds a criminal wrongdoing or criminal liability of any individual or suspect, we will get the suspect charged. Akmal to be charged with causing public fear

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh will be charged at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate's Court this Friday with making statements likely to cause fear or alarm to the public. He said that he was informed of the charge via a call from the police as he was performing umrah in Mecca yesterday. 'I have been contacted by the police that I will be charged in court under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code. 'Therefore, I will shorten my umrah and return home to face the charge this Friday at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate's Court at 8am,' he said in a Facebook post yesterday. If convicted, a person can be punished with up to two years imprisonment, a fine, or both. While he did not mention why he was being charged, he stressed that he would not back down. Cook charged with fatally stabbing wife's lover
SEREMBAN: A cook has been charged with fatally stabbing a 28-year-old man who allegedly had an affair with his wife. No plea was recorded from the accused, Zulazren Zakariah, after the charge was read to him before Magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli. The 31-year-old was charged with stabbing Muhammad Amirul Rashid Mohd Niza in the chest with a knife at a house in Taman Seri Pagi. The alleged offence was committed around 6.50pm on Aug 11. The accused was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. Offenders can be sent to the gallows or jailed between 30 and 40 years and whipped a minimum of 12 times, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nik Nur 'Aqilah Syarfa Nik Zaidi asked the court for a mention date as the chemist, post-mortem and DNA reports were not ready. The court fixed Oct 17 for mention. The magistrate told the accused, who was unrepresented, that the court was not offering him bail as it was a murder charge. When met outside the court later, a brother of the accused appealed to Internet users to stop posting comments on the case as it is under investigation. He said the accused is the youngest of 15 siblings and has two young children with his wife. Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, a 40-year-old man was sentenced to two years' jail by the same court here after he pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting his wife. Mohd Khairol Mohd Abu admitted to committing the offence at around 1pm on June 6 at their home in Lenggeng near here. K. Kogilawani from the Legal Aid Department, who represented the accused, pleaded for a light sentence as the accused only does odd jobs and has to provide for five children, one of whom has special needs. According to the facts of the case, the victim suffered swelling on her body after she was assaulted by her husband. Deputy public prosecutor Nik Nur 'Aqilah Syarfa Nik Zaidi asked that a suitable sentence be given to the accused.
