Golf in Asia: Aussie Herbert seals Asian Tour win with final-hole heroics

The Star11-05-2025
TOKYO (AFP): Australia's Lucas Herbert eagled the last hole for the second day in a row to claim his first title on the Asian Tour by five strokes in Japan on Sunday.
The 29-year-old, who plays on the LIV Golf circuit, established a dominant lead at International Series Japan and finished with a flourish on the par-5 18th.
Herbert finished 20-under-par overall to lift the trophy ahead of playing partners Song Young-han of South Korea and Japan's Yuta Sugiura.
The win moved him to the top of the Asian Tour Order of Merit, as well as the International Series rankings.
"The way I've been playing this year, it's been building to get a win at some point," said Herbert, who has won once on the US PGA Tour.
"So it's nice to get it done here, especially in Japan which is one of my favourite places.
"It's nice to feel like some of the hard work that I put in has paid off," he added.
Herbert set himself up for the final day with an electric finish on Saturday, carding eagles on two of the final three holes to finish the round tied for the lead with Song and Sugiura.
The Australian birdied three of the opening five holes on Sunday to move into the lead and he never looked back.
Herbert closed the win out in style with a long, curving putt on the 18th.
"I was thinking about it down on the 18th green, that finish yesterday really set it up," he said.
"It would have been much tougher, I think, to play in the group in front, or maybe two groups in front, had I parred in and to try and come back from behind today." - AFP

Akie Iwai wins Portland Classic to join twin sister as LPGA champion

JAPAN 's Akie Iwai carded a six-under 66 to secure her maiden LPGA victory at the Portland Classic. The win makes her the 10th first-time champion this season and the fifth Japanese player to lift a trophy. Iwai finished with a 24-under total of 264, four strokes clear of American Gurleen Kaur in second place. Kaur posted a bogey-free 65, her best LPGA round, but couldn't close the gap on the steady Iwai. Chisato Iwai, Akie's twin sister, charged up the leaderboard with an eight-under 64 to finish tied for third. Chisato had previously won the Riviera Maya Open in May, inspiring Akie to push for her own breakthrough. '(She) really inspired me,' said Akie, who also finished runner-up in Thailand and at the LA Championship this year. Akie started strong with birdies on the fifth and sixth, then added two more at the 11th and 14th. She sealed the win with back-to-back birdies on the final two holes, including an 18-footer at the last. 'Today I was able to conquer myself,' she said after the emotional victory. Chisato was the first to celebrate, rushing onto the green to spray champagne with her sister. 'Just watching, so nervous,' Chisato admitted as Akie closed out the win. Chisato's round included two eagles and four straight birdies, but an early bogey kept her from contention. Sweden's Linn Grant matched Chisato's 19-under total, while Australia's Grace Kim finished fifth at 18-under. The victory cements the Iwai twins as rising stars in women's golf. - AFP

LIV's DeChambeau joins Henley and English as US Ryder Cup qualifiers

New York: LIV Golf's Bryson DeChambeau joined PGA Tour players Russell Henley and Harris English in qualifying for US Ryder Cup team spots after Sunday's BMW Championship, the last US points event. World number one Scottie Scheffler, a two-time Masters champion who won this year's British Open and PGA Championship, US Open winner J.J. Spaun and two-time major winner Xander Schauffele had already clinched berths based on accumulated qualifying points. US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley will announce his six captain's picks to complete the squad on August 27, with a major question being whether or not he will pick himself to play against Europe at Bethpage Black next month. Scheffler, who won his fifth title of the year Sunday at the BMW, is 2-2-3 in Ryder Cup matches. Spaun and Henley will be making their Ryder Cup debuts. Schauffele, last year's British Open and PGA Championship winner, is 4-4-0 in two prior Ryder Cups while English was 1-2-0 on the triumphant US team in 2021 at Whistling Straits. Scheffler wins BMW Championship with stunning chip-in

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER delivered a dramatic 82-foot birdie chip on the 17th hole to seal victory at the BMW Championship. The world number one carded a three-under 67 to finish at 15-under 265, two strokes ahead of Scotland's Robert MacIntyre. Scheffler became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006-07 to win five or more times in consecutive seasons. The win solidifies his status as the favourite for next week's Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup playoffs. Scheffler's remarkable chip at the par-three 17th restored his two-stroke lead after a nervy approach shot. 'Any time you hole a chip like that it's pretty nice,' Scheffler said. 'It looked good when it landed, it looked good when it was rolling and it was nice to see that one go in.' He admitted nearly taking a riskier shot at the pin but opted for a safer play. 'I played smart off the tee,' Scheffler said. 'Part of me wanted to go at the pin and then I kind of held it off.' MacIntyre, who led early, struggled with three bogeys in the first five holes. 'I got off to an absolutely horrific start,' MacIntyre said. 'I just felt great going out. I wasn't even expecting to be over par, to be honest.' Scheffler credited his consistency to maintaining intensity throughout the tournament. 'I think it has a lot to do with the intensity I bring to each round,' Scheffler said. 'I try not to take days off.' The victory also secured Scheffler's spot on the US Ryder Cup team for next month's event at Bethpage Black. He will be joined by US Open winner J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, Harris English, and Bryson DeChambeau. Scheffler's birdie putts at the fifth and seventh holes helped him regain the lead after an early bogey. MacIntyre briefly closed the gap with a birdie at the 16th, but Scheffler's heroics at the 17th sealed the win. The BMW Championship was the second FedEx Cup playoff event, with the top 30 advancing to the Tour Championship. England's Harry Hall secured the final spot, edging out past US Open winner Lucas Glover. - AFP
