Heroic flash flood victim, 22, used his last bit of strength to save best friend before being swept to his death
A young man who lost his life in a flash flood saved his childhood best friend in his last act of service on Earth. Cohen Turner, 22, died on Sunday in an Alabama flood, the Turkey Heaven Volunteer Fire Department confirmed. Cohen and his friend were driving in the early hours of the morning when their vehicle was submerged in a creek, his uncle announced. The two escaped the vehicle through the sunroof, but Cohen's friend went underwater. 'His friend went under and his last actions were that of abandoning his own safety and pushing his friend to a tree for safety,' Cohen's uncle, Danny, wrote on social media. 'A heroic act by everyone's definition. Cohen was then swept under afterwards.' Danny said his nephew's body was later found by emergency personnel, and the family was notified of the tragedy. 'No greater act of selflessness than to give your life for another. Keep our family, especially his father Jay and mother Robin in your prayers,' Cohen's uncle added. Danny, a police officer in the area, told the local Alabama outlet, Advance Local, 'To be a 22-year-old and be so selfless to give your life to help a friend, it's unheard of in these times.' He said Cohen was sleeping in the passenger's side of the car while his friend drove when the flash flood engulfed them. They were only a few miles away from Cohen's home when the flooding pinned their vehicle against a guardrail and gave out to the creek. 'Cohen tells his friend they need to go to the right because there's going to be less water over there and they had a better chance of making it to land,' Danny told AL. 'They jumped off together.' Cohen helped his friend find safety in a tree. 'Anybody who has ever been in the water knows that if you push somebody up, you're pushing yourself down at the same time,' Danny said. 'Cohen went under.' Danny said that rescue workers found Cohen's friend safe in a tree. He added that Cohen's body was located not too far behind. He said that it seemed like Cohen had made it to a safe place, but was trapped by a fallen tree. 'Any one of the circumstances he would have prevailed, but with it being rapid fire problem after problem being thrown his way, the totality of the circumstances made it where he couldn't prevail,' Cohen's uncle said. Since Danny had served as a police officer for over 30 years, authorities notified him of his nephew's death first. 'Our family is completely devastated by the loss of such an incredible person,' he added. Cohen was born on December 30, 2002 in Georgia and loved hunting, fishing, and helping others, according to his obituary. His uncle said that after graduating from high school, he worked rigging scaffolding on buildings in Atlanta. Cohen is survived by his mother and father, Robin and Jay Turner, siblings Colt Stephens and Haven Turner, and his niece and nephew, Maddox and Sadie Stephens. He is also survived by his grandmother, Judy Turner, and his 'soulmate,' Cera Brewer. Cohen's girlfriend, Cera, posted a tribute on social media that read, 'My heart is shattered. My boyfriend, my love, my best friend, is gone far too soon. There are no words big enough to explain the pain, or to describe how much he meant to me.' 'He made me feel safe, loved, and truly seen. His laughter, his warmth, the way he looked at me—I will carry it all with me, always,' she continued.

Group of best friends killed when SUV flipped and burst into flames after driver slammed into oncoming traffic
A group of five best friends in their early twenties were killed in a horrific crash while they were on a trip to a vacation house in Texas. The victims in the July 25 collision were identified as Thalia Salinas, Ruby Cruz, Brianna Valadez, Desiree Cervantez, and Jacqueline Velazco. The women were in the same Mercedes SUV together on US 281 near Austin when a 2018 Ram 4500 truck pulling a livestock trailer hit them. The truck had been traveling northbound but veered into the southbound lanes, colliding with multiple vehicles. The SUV carrying the women flipped on impact and caught fire, killing everyone inside, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). All five women were from the Dallas area and considered each other sisters, their families have said. They were on their way to a lake house in central Texas to celebrate Thalia's 23rd birthday. Thalia was driving the car at the time of the crash. 'You go to the lake house and you see the cops and you see this reality and that's when it sinks in,' Sal Salinas, Thalia's older brother, told FOX 4. 'We were devastated. Everyone was. To see my mom devastated and my was very hard.' 'Words can't describe how devastated we are,' they said. 'We were en route to celebrate Thalia's birthday in Kingsland, Texas, at her favorite place — on the lake — with all her favorite people. Then we got news of the girls' passing away in the worst accident we could ever imagine.' Drivers of the other vehicles that were hit by the truck survived with minor injuries, according to authorities. A little less than two weeks after the five women were killed, the man police suspect was driving the truck was arrested. On Tuesday, DPS officers arrested Kody Lane Talley and booked him into the Burnet County Jail. DPS troopers said that Talley, 37, ditched the truck after ramming it into a fence. He also refused medical treatment on the scene. Talley now faces five counts of manslaughter. According to a crash report viewed by FOX 4, Talley was not tested for drugs or alcohol on the day of the incident. Each family created a GoFundMe page for their loved ones to help pay for their funerals, which are all happening this week. Thalia, who had just celebrated her nephew's 1st birthday the week before she was killed, was described as 'quiet,' but the funniest person in the room to people who knew her. 'She was witty, intelligent, loyal, and the true manager of our household, always keeping us all in line. If you were lucky to call her a friend, she was the best friend you had,' the family wrote in the GoFundMe description. The fundraisers for all the women raised tens of thousands of dollars. Combined, people have donated nearly $100,000 to the victims' families.

Beloved actor shot and killed while walking dog after trying to help woman fighting with her boyfriend
A stage actor was shot and killed in broad daylight while walking his dog on Saturday morning after stepping in to help a woman caught in a violent dispute. Adam Turck, 35, a fixture of Richmond, Virginia 's theater and fitness communities, was gunned down outside an apartment building in the city's historic Church Hill neighborhood after witnessing a fight between a woman and her boyfriend. Turck stepped in and tried to calm the situation down but was shot in the process. The shooter, a 19-year-old man, then turned the gun on himself. Both men were found critically wounded when Richmond police arrived around 10:17am. Turck was rushed to the hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. His organs are being donated, in what his family called the final selfless act of a man who 'put his life on the line to protect someone in need.' 'If Adam had not been there, the person he intervened to help would not be with us today,' his family said in a statement. 'That's what heroes do – they save the lives of others.' According to police and witness accounts, Turck had been walking his dog, Lana, when he came across a heated argument between a teenage man and a young woman on the sidewalk. Alarmed by the escalating confrontation, Turck stepped in to try to diffuse things. That's when the suspect pulled a handgun from a backpack and shot Turck before shooting himself, police said. The woman involved was not injured. 'This is a tragic story of gun violence against a person who was simply trying to de-escalate a disturbing argument,' said Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards. 'This is a heartbreaking reminder that we must, as a community, continue to combat gun violence in our society.' The shock of Turck's death has rippled across Richmond's arts scene and beyond, where friends, colleagues, and former castmates described him as a rare force of good and someone who was generous, brilliant, and fearless to the end. 'I cannot explain the size of the hole that has been left, not just in our gym community or our theater communities, but in the fabric of this world to lose somebody like Adam,' said Kerith Rae, the owner of the gym where Turck trained. 'He's the kind of person people write about in books because they want to be that good and he just was. And this world is a duller, darker place without him. 'Superman at the end of the day is a firefighter. Superman is someone who comes in and helps people. He worries about everything else, later, someone who steps in to make sure that everyone is okay. And that was Adam,' said friend CJ Bergin. Ruth Hedburg, a local costume designer, recalled meeting Turck in 2015 when he played Tigger in The House at Pooh Corner. 'Meeting him and speaking to him, you instantaneously were the most important person in his life - until that interaction was over,' she said. 'The result is awful, but I know Adam would get up and do it again. That's who he was.' Turck moved to Richmond after touring the country with Olney Theatre's National Players, settling in the city he would call home for the next decade. Known for his electric stage presence, he won Richmond Theatre Community Circle's Best Actor award in 2018 for Hand to God and was slated to star in Dracula: A Comedy of Horrors this fall. His final performance was in Smoke with Cadence Theatre. Virginia Repertory Theatre, where Turck frequently performed, released an emotional statement on his passing. 'We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Adam Turck, a gifted actor, passionate activist, and beloved member of our community,' the statement read. 'Adam was a light, both on stage and in every space he entered. Richmond's lights are dimmer today, but his legacy will burn brightly in us all. Rest in power, Adam.' Nathaniel Shaw, artistic director at Firehouse Theatre, said Turck's death has left an enormous void. 'When he saw something that was not right happening, Adam brought himself into the fray to help other people,' Shaw said. 'That was who he was.' Turck's loved ones said he lived his life 'to the absolute fullest,' describing him as playful, clever, wildly competitive, and unwavering in his sense of justice. 'He had a moral compass made of steel,' his family said. 'He was also stubborn, too smart for his own good, and when he started a bit, oh, that man would not quit. But above all else, he was kind.' Turck is survived by his parents, Peter and Terry Ann, his brothers Pete and David, and his dog Lana, whom he adopted from Southside Animal Control. His family confirmed his organs will be donated. 'We hope that those lives he saves will know that they hold the soul of a hero within them,' they wrote. As tributes continue to pour in, memorial events are being planned across the Richmond arts community, which continues to mourn the man many are calling 'our Superman.' 'You've probably seen a lot of Superman imagery in the past few days as people have poured out their love,' the family wrote. 'If you've seen the latest movie, you'll know the poster tells us to Look Up. We're looking up for you, Adam. We're gonna keep looking up.'
