After Air India tragedy, Boeing CEO pulls out of Paris Airshow 2025; GE postpones big event amid global shock

Time of India13-06-2025
Boeing and GE Aerospace have announced they will scale back public appearances at next week's
Paris Airshow
after the tragic Air India plane crash that claimed more than 240 lives. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, heading from Ahmedabad to London, crashed shortly after take-off on Thursday, making it the deadliest aviation disaster in over a decade.
Boeing CEO Cancels Trip
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said in a message to staff that he and Boeing Commercial Airplanes head Stephanie Pope had cancelled their plans to attend the Paris Airshow. 'We want to stay with our team and focus on our customer and the ongoing investigation,' Ortberg stated.
The Paris Airshow, scheduled from June 16 to 20, is the world's biggest aviation industry event, where aircraft manufacturers often announce new deals. Ortberg was supposed to attend the show for the first time as Boeing CEO.

GE Postpones Investor Meet
GE Aerospace, which made the engines used in the crashed Boeing aircraft, also cancelled its investor day planned for June 17. The company said it is assembling a team to travel to India to help with the investigation.
'GE Aerospace's senior leadership is focusing on supporting our customer and the official probe,' the company said, adding that it will share financial updates later this month.

Early Stage of Investigation
Experts say it's too early to guess the cause of the crash. As per a Reuters report, Paul Hayes, a safety director at UK-based Cirium Ascend, said accidents during take-off are rare and usually result from a mix of multiple factors.
As per global rules, India will lead the investigation, supported by U.S. NTSB officials, who will coordinate with Boeing and GE on technical matters.
A Gloomy Airshow Ahead
The crash has brought a somber mood to the Paris Airshow. Delegates said that many order announcements could be delayed or cancelled out of respect for the victims. Boeing has already dropped some events and is not expected to announce any major aircraft orders at the show.
A major deal expected from Royal Air Maroc, which was considering an order for dozens of Boeing jets and Airbus A220s, is now unlikely to be announced during the event.
Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury expressed his condolences and said the company would keep a low profile at the show.
One delegate summed up the atmosphere: 'The show will continue, but it will be more muted and respectful, not the usual celebratory tone.'

Bullish IPO stuns as BLSH stock may jump 62% to $55–$60 after massive demand — Peter Thiel-backed crypto a must-buy?

Bullish IPO kicked off today, with shares of the Peter Thiel-backed crypto exchange, BLSH, expected to open in the $55–$60 range. That would mark roughly a 62% jump from the initial $37 IPO price. The surge reflects investor excitement, fueled by demand more than 20 times the available shares, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. For traders and institutional investors, this signals one of the most watched crypto market debuts in recent years. Why Bullish is capturing investor attention Bullish isn't just another exchange. It combines institutional-grade trading with CoinDesk ownership , giving it a unique edge in data, media, and crypto indices. The platform focuses on Bitcoin and Ethereum, offering spot and derivatives trading with liquidity and compliance front and center. Analysts note that targeting institutional investors, rather than retail traders alone, may provide more stable growth in volatile crypto markets. Tinnitus Experts Undo Bullish IPO priced at $37 per share with a $5.4B valuation. Peter Thiel's involvement adds credibility. His Founders Fund, along with interest from BlackRock, Galaxy Digital, and ARK Invest , reflects strong institutional confidence. According to MarketWatch, ARK Invest may purchase up to $200 million worth of shares at the IPO price. Live Events How demand shaped the IPO Bullish initially planned to offer 20.3 million shares at $32–$33. Strong investor interest prompted the company to increase the offering to 30 million shares and raise the price to $37. Despite this, a third of institutional orders went unfilled, with allocations prioritized for long-only investors and existing relationships. This pattern mirrors Circle Internet Group's IPO in June, which also experienced outsized demand and saw shares rise more than 400% since listing. The comparison highlights a renewed appetite for crypto-linked public offerings. Financials show a quick turnaround While Bullish posted a net loss in the first quarter of 2025, management expects to swing to profitability in Q2 with projected net income between $106 million and $109 million. Trading volumes tell the story—$250 billion in 2024, compared with just $72.7 billion in 2022, a growth trajectory that suggests its institutional bet is paying off. The company also disclosed crypto holdings worth about $2 billion, the majority in Bitcoin, with smaller allocations to Ethereum and stablecoins. Those reserves aren't just balance sheet filler—they're part of the firm's liquidity strategy, giving it the ability to settle trades quickly and withstand market shocks. What investors should weigh While momentum is strong, there are factors to consider: Profitability: Bullish reported a net loss in Q1 2025 but projects Q2 net income of $106–$109 million . Execution on margins and cash flow will be crucial for sustained performance. Volatility: Crypto markets remain unpredictable. Price swings in Bitcoin and Ethereum could directly impact results. Competition: Established exchanges and brokers present ongoing challenges. Bullish's niche focus and CoinDesk integration offer differentiation but require execution. Disclosure: As a foreign private issuer, Bullish may provide lighter ongoing disclosure than domestic peers, a factor for cautious investors. What this means for the crypto market Bullish's debut underscores renewed institutional confidence in crypto, especially amid regulatory clarity for stablecoins under the Trump Administration. The IPO serves as a signal that digital assets are attracting mainstream investment, bridging the gap between retail enthusiasm and professional trading. If BLSH opens near the projected range, it could set the tone for future crypto IPOs , influencing how exchanges, institutional investors, and regulators approach listings moving forward. FAQs: Q1. What is the Bullish IPO opening price and expected BLSH stock range? BLSH is set to open between $55–$60 , about 62% above the IPO price of $37. Q2. Who backs Bullish in its IPO and why does it matter? Bullish is backed by Peter Thiel, BlackRock, Galaxy Digital, and ARK Invest , signaling strong institutional confidence.

Currency watch: Rupee climbs 16 paise to 87.47 against US dollar, crude slide and Fed cut hopes lift sentiment

The rupee appreciated 16 paise to end at 87.47 against the US dollar on Wednesday, buoyed by a weak greenback and positive sentiment in domestic equity markets. Traders said easing crude oil prices and cooling inflation further supported the local currency, although uncertainties over trade tariffs and persistent foreign fund outflows capped sharper gains. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 87.63 and moved between an intraday low of 87.72 and a high of 87.38 before settling at 87.47, up 16 paise from the previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee had risen 12 paise to end at 87.63, PTI reported. "The rupee experienced its biggest one-day appreciation since July 3, driven by a decline in the US dollar. The dollar weakened amid expectations of a September interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve, following a decline in US inflation," said Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities. Parmar added that gains in Indian equities and other Asian currencies, a fall in crude oil prices, and cooling domestic Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation further bolstered the rupee. Brent crude futures fell 0.54% to $65.76 per barrel. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major currencies, slipped 0.44% to 97.66. Anuj Chaudhary, Research Analyst at Commodities and Currencies, Mirae Asset Sharekhan, said, "The rupee rose sharply on cooling inflation and strength in the domestic markets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn More - How Donating Sperm May Boost Your Income SpellRock Undo India's CPI inflation cooled off to 1.55% in July 2025 vs the forecast of 1.76% and 2.1% in June. The US Dollar too fell as CPI data was in line with estimates, raising odds of a rate cut by the Fed in September." Retail inflation slowed to an 8-year low of 1.55% in July, moving below the Reserve Bank's comfort zone for the first time since January 2019, helped by subdued food prices, government data showed. The RBI is tasked with keeping CPI inflation at 4%, with a margin of 2% on either side. Chaudhary added that sliding crude oil prices also supported the rupee. "We expect the rupee to trade with a positive bias on risk sentiments in the global market and a weakening US dollar. Softening inflation and declining crude oil prices may further support the domestic currency. However, the ongoing trade tariff war between India and the US and FII outflows may cap sharp upside. Investors may remain cautious ahead of US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin's meeting on Friday," he said. In equities, the Sensex climbed 304.32 points to close at 80,539.91, while the Nifty advanced 131.95 points to end at 24,619.35. Foreign Institutional Investors sold shares worth Rs 3,644.43 crore on Wednesday, exchange data showed. Tesco to open new distribution centre in Karnataka, create 15,000 jobs: Minister

Bengaluru, Aug 13 (PTI) UK-based retail giant Tesco plans to set up a new distribution centre in Karnataka, creating 15,000 additional jobs, Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil said on Wednesday. UK engineering major Rolls-Royce is also exploring fresh investments in the state, he said, adding that the government would expedite all necessary processes to facilitate the company's plans, his office said in a release. Patil made the announcement while addressing a reception hosted on Tuesday by the British Deputy High Commission to mark the signing of the India–United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The pact is projected to boost bilateral trade by about Euro 25 billion annually and help double trade volumes to nearly Euro 90 billion by 2030. 'The FTA would pave the way for duty-free access for 99 per cent of India's exports to the UK and 90 per cent of UK exports to India. This would mean more affordable products, greater market access for businesses, and a surge in commerce benefiting consumers and industries in both countries," he said. Patil noted that leading British firms such as Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Tesco, ARM, HSBC, and Aviva already have a strong presence in Bengaluru and across Karnataka, collectively employing nearly 30,000 people in the state. He said the FTA would enable UK companies to scale up investments in Karnataka and urged them to leverage the state's technology capabilities, infrastructure, and industry-friendly policies. 'The government will respond proactively to those keen on investing," he assured. According to the minister's office, the event was attended by Harjinder Singh, UK Trade Commissioner; Chandru Iyer, British Deputy High Commissioner; and other dignitaries.
