Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk will be the face of NHL 26

Miami Herald3 days ago
Matthew Tkachuk has been the face of the Florida Panthers for the past three years. He is becoming one of the faces of USA hockey, too, leading into the Winter Olympics in February.
And now, he's the face of the NHL's annual video game.
Tkachuk, the Panthers' star winger, will be the cover athlete for NHL 26, EA Sports unveiled on Monday. The full cover design for the game will be announced Wednesday on the EA Sports NHL YouTube channel.
Tkachuk, who joined the Panthers via a blockbuster trade with the Calgary Flames ahead of the 2022-23 season, has helped turn the Panthers into a juggernaut. Florida has reached the Stanley Cup Final in all three of his seasons with the team and won it all each of the past two years.
In that time, Tkachuk has logged 254 points (88 goals, 166 assists) in 211 regular-season games with the Panthers while adding another 69 points (25 goals, 44 assists) in 67 Stanley Cup playoffs games. He was tied for the team lead with 23 points during the team's run to a second consecutive Stanley Cup.
Tkachuk also helped the United States win silver in the 4 Nations Face-Off in February and has already been named one of six players to be on Team USA for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
Tkachuk is the second Panthers player to grace the cover of the video game's main cover. Goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck was on the cover of NHL 97. Meanwhile, Olli Jokinen was on the cover of the European version of NHL 2005.
It's the second time in the past three years a South Florida athlete has been the main cover athlete for a league's video game. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was on the cover of 2023 edition of MLB The Show when he was with the Miami Marlins.

Jen Pawol will be MLB's 1st female umpire. Here are other women who have broken officiating barriers.

This weekend, Jen Pawol will make history by becoming the first woman to umpire a Major League Baseball game. She's set to work the series between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves. The 48-year-old from New Jersey has worked spring training games over the last two years and in the minors since 2016. Here's a look at other female officials who were the first on the floor, court or the field in prominent men's leagues. Shannon Eastin became the first female official in NFL history when she was a line judge during a preseason game in August 2012 between the Green Bay Packers and the Chargers, who were then in San Diego. A month later, she became the first woman to be an official in an NFL regular-season game when she worked as the line judge in the Rams-Lions game. Eastin was among the replacement officials hired by the league during a lockout of the regular officials. The first woman to get a full-season job was Sarah Thomas, who was a line judge in 2015. Thomas also became the first woman to work a Super Bowl when she was part of the seven-person crew on Feb. 7, 2021, when Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-9. Thomas was already the first woman to officiate a major college football game — and to work a bowl game. Violet Palmer and Dee Kantner were hired by the National Basketball Association for the 1997 season. Palmer made her NBA debut on Oct. 31, 1997, when she was on the floor for the season opener between the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Dallas Mavericks. Palmer worked that night with Bill Oakes and Mark Wunderlich. Kantner's first game was Nov. 5, 1997, when Atlanta beat Philadelphia 93-88. Kantner worked alongside Ron Garretson and Ed Middleton. Palmer retired in 2016, and Kantner is still officiating women's NCAA basketball. The NHL has yet to have a female on-ice official for a regular season or Stanley Cup playoff game. In the mid-1990s, Heather McDaniel received some national attention for officiating men's minor league games for the Central Hockey League and West Coast Hockey League. Two decades later, the NHL selected four female officials to work on the ice at the 2019 prospect tournaments. Katie Guay and Kelly Cooke served as referees, while Kirsten Welsh and Kendall Hanley worked as linesmen. It marked the first time women have officiated at the pre-training camp prospects tournament level. There was a subtle change made before the 2023-24 season when 'linesmen' became 'linespersons,' with women in the American Hockey League working their way up. French referee Stéphanie Frappart made history in 2022 by becoming the first woman to be in charge of a men's World Cup match. The game between Germany at Costa Rica was held in Al Khor, Qatar. Working the game with Frappart were two female assistants — Neuza Back of Brazil and Karen Diaz Medina of Mexico. Melanie Davis was the first woman to officiate a Division I NCAA men's tournament game when she was on the floor for a first-round matchup between San Diego State and Illinois on March 15, 2002. Leading into the historical game, Davis had officiated men's contests in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

It will be available of YouTube and Spotify in the UK and Ireland, featuring clips from every la Liga game along with expert analysis and discussion. Lineker, who is set to front ITV reality show The Box, turned out for Barca during his playing career in the 1980s. 'I've made no secret of my love for Spanish football over the years,' said Lineker, who is Goalhanger's co-founder. 'Ever since I played there in the late '80s, I've followed the story of La Liga closely. Now, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marcus Rashford joining Jude Bellingham and Conor Gallagher in Spain, all eyes will be on La Liga's biggest games each week. The Rest Is Football: LaLiga will be the perfect way to catch all the goals and key action.' Goalhanger's other co-founder, Tony Pastor, noted that downloads of The Rest is Football spiked to 19.6 million and streams in June 2024 during the last men's UEFA European Championship, which saw Spain defeat England 2-1 in the final. In particular, YouTube viewing was well up, with 'more than half' of the downloads made thrre. 'Bringing weekly match action to The Rest Is Football feels like the natural next step for the show. Podcasting is no longer just an audio medium – video is transforming how people engage with our content and bringing in entirely new audiences,' said Pastor. The Rest Is Football: LaLiga launches on August 19 and will releases weekly episodes, with the video stream limited to the UK and Ireland. Disney+ deal The news came on the same day Disney+ confirmed it had secured a three-year deal, beginning on August 16, that will give subscribers access to live Saturday night La Liga soccer games. This will kick off with Valencia CF hostingReal Sociedad at the Mestalla Stadium from 8:30pm UK local time. Disney-owned ESPN will provide the production and commentary. Real Madrid and Liverpool legend Steve 'Macca' McManaman will lead the commentary team alongside former Arsenal and West Ham midfielder Stewart Robson. Broadcasters Ian Darke and Rob Palmer will alternate play-by-play duties throughout the season. The deal also sees and ESPN UK's social channels and YouTube offering highlights of every La Liga game and news on developments in Spain. It comes soon after Disney+ secured exclusive rights to the UEFA Women's Champions League across Europe for the next five years. Most La Liga games will still play on Premier Sports in the UK and Ireland. The sports broadcaster and streaming service today secure a new three-year deal for all games outside of the Saturday 8pm slot. This gives it more than 340 games in total. 'At Disney, we celebrate storytelling that moves and excites,' said Karl Holmes, Disney+ EMEA's General Manager. 'From the cinematic scale of FX's Alien: Earth to the sharp wit of Only Murders in the Building and the action-packed suspense of Lucasfilm's Andor, our customers know they're in for something special. With La Liga joining the line-up, they can experience that same excitement on the pitch with weekly matches featuring legendary clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona and stars like Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold as part of their Disney+ subscription.' Former Sky finance chief Holmes recently took up his post at Disney+. He'll soon be joined by long-serving ITV exec Angela Jain, who was named Head of Content for EMEA in June. Disney+'s move is the latest example of a streaming service acquiring sports rights as a means to attract new subs in the competitive UK market. For example, Prime Video has in recent seasons dipped into the market for Premier League and Champions League games. La Liga President Javier Tebas said: 'Today begins a new era in La Liga's broadcast distribution in the UK and Ireland. Making sense of the Boston Celtics after the Georges Niang trade and Chris Boucher signing

Making sense of the Boston Celtics after the Georges Niang trade and Chris Boucher signing, we can see that while the roster is in a better position to play some younger players in need of game time to develop the roster, others still have a bit of a logjam in front of them when it comes to finding minutes to hone their craft and hopefully secure a longer-term future with the Celtics. What will change as a result of dealing Niang into the Utah Jazz cap space? Who might see less floor time now that Boston has brought on the former Toronto Raptors big man? And what is the plan for the coming 2025-26 regular season for the Celtics in light of these unexpected moves? The man behind the "Nik NBA" YouTube channel put together a clip taking a closer look at how the Boucher signing and Niang trade shake things up for Boston. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what he had to say. Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on: Spotify: iTunes: YouTube:
