Jay Leno looks frail and exhausted as he takes vintage 1910 steam car out eight months after serious injury

Daily Mail15-07-2025
Jay Leno looked unusually frail when he was spotted taking a joy ride in his vintage 1910 Model O-O White Steam Car on Monday.
The 75-year-old former Tonight Show host appeared thinner than he has in recent years, and he looked particularly exhausted when he was seen taking the car out in Burbank, California, where the garage he stores his classic cars in is located.
He was pictured around eight months after he appeared with a shockingly bruised and battered face in November of last year after he reportedly took a tumble down a steep hill near a hotel he was staying at ahead of a comedy show.
Jay was dressed ruggedly in a blue denim Western shirt with snap buttons, and he showed off a mass of impressively thick white hair.
Part of his visibly apparent strain may have been due to the steam car failing to run as desired.
Although he was able to drive the 115-year-old car for a bit, it wasn't long before observers spotted it breaking down.
Jay was surrounded by some of his employees as they tried to figure out what was wrong and get the car back into working condition.
However, the classic car apparently required a more sophisticated intervention than they could offer on the street, so he eventually had to call a tow truck to take the steam car back to his garage.
Leno appeared to have completely healed from his latest injury, which he sustained after taking a 60ft fall near a Hampton Inn in Greenhouse, Pennsylvania.
He said he had been trying to visit a nearby restaurant ahead of a show he was scheduled to perform that evening when he tried to take a shortcut.
'To get to [the restaurant], I didn't have a car, so you had to walk about a mile and a half around,' he explained.
'I said, "Well, the hill doesn't look that steep. It's about 60–70 feet. Let me see if I can go down the hill,"' he continued.
But Leno lost his footing due to the steep slope and uneven terrain, and he crashed down to the bottom of the hill.
'Boom, boom, boom. I rolled down the hill, hit my head on a rock, knocked me in the eye,' Leno added of the incident.
Some fans didn't buy the explanation and took to social media to theorize about his injuries.
Some posters joked that he was in debt to mobsters who had roughed him up over gambling losses.
Fueling the conspiracy theories and jokes was a previous injury Leno sustained in 2023.
That summer he broke both of his kneecaps in what he later said was a motorcycle crash.
The accident-prone comic's injuries followed a 2022 incident in which he suffered serious burns to his face.
He had been working on an old steam-powered car that used gasoline to heat water, turning it into steam that could in turn move the pistons, though it appears that the car he drove on Monday was a slightly more recent steam car, rather than the 1907 White Model G that he reportedly had been tinkering with at the time.
That car reportedly burst into flames without explanation while he was working on it, and Leno was sprayed on the face with the burning gasoline.
Firefighters were promptly called to the garage to put out the blaze, and Leno was taken to a hospital, but his injuries were not said to be life threatening.
Earlier this year, Leno gave a personal update on a difficult family situation after he became his wife Mavis' caretaker after she was diagnosed with 'advanced' dementia.
Jay got candid about the topic during an interview on In Depth With Graham Bensinger in April.
A year earlier, the star was granted conservatorship of his 78-year-old after a court filing revealed that she 'sometimes does not' recognize him and does not remember her own birth date.
At one point, Leno was asked what he has learned most about himself while being by his wife's side amid her heartbreaking health battle.
'Well, I have never been particularly challenged. I was not in the army, I didn't have to shoot anybody. I didn't have to risk my life,' he admitted.
'When I got married, you sort of take a vow — "Will I live up to this? Or will I be like a sleazy guy if something happens to my wife, I'm out banging the cashier at the mini mart?" No, I didn't,' Leno said.
The TV personality added, 'I enjoy the time with my wife. I go home, I cook dinner for her, watch TV and it's OK. It's OK.
'It's basically what we did before, except now I have to feed her and do all those things.'
Jay explained to the host, 'But I like it. I like taking care of her. I think, you know, somewhere in my life — she's a very independent woman, so I like that I'm needed. You know, and I need to be there. And it's good.'

Meghan locked in negotiations for new Netflix deal with £73mn five-year contract set to expire

The Duchess of Sussex is locked in negotiations for a second contract with Netflix. The streaming giant has decided to draw up a new deal with Meghan after the Sussexes' £73 million five-year contract comes to an end in September. Reports last week claimed that Netflix were going to drop the couple, having decided that the arrangement with them had 'run its course'. But the Mail on Sunday can reveal that the second series of With Love, Meghan will be the first show to air under the renewed agreement and it is due for release this autumn. Last night, sources close to the streaming giant said: 'Make no mistake – a deal is being worked through as we speak.' While the finer details remain a closely guarded secret, it is expected that the duchess is unlikely to secure the same financial deal she did previously when the couple first walked away from their role as senior Royals. It is also not thought that Harry, whose vanity project, Polo, about the sport, was watched by just 500,000 people and rated at only 3,436th in the Netflix charts, will form a major part of the new contract as he is increasingly focused on his charity work. His other shows, Heart Of Invictus, about his wounded veterans initiative, and his leadership documentary, Live To Lead, were also only moderately received. Meanwhile, interest in former actress Meghan, who starred in legal drama series Suits, which remains one of the streaming service's top shows, continues to be higher. With Love, Meghan pulled in 5.3 million views in the first half of this year even though critics described it as 'bland' and 'forgettable'. The source added: 'If you're in the top third of Netflix, you're getting another deal.' It is understood that Meghan's new series was filmed at the same time as series one was recorded last year. She also has a collection of products called As Ever. Another source said: 'What happens at the end of the contract is that people renegotiate. But when doing any kind of commercial negotiation, both sides are not allowed to talk about it. 'Netflix is a listed company so they can't say anything or confirm officially yet that a new deal is happening, but that deal is not dead. Netflix are an equity partner in As Ever, so they were unlikely to drop Meghan. 'It serves them to promote her and her lifestyle brand via the With Love, Meghan show. It would be like punching yourself in the face not to sign a new deal.' The streaming giant is set to open two vast retail and entertainment 'hubs', called Netflix Houses, later this year, with locations in mega malls in Pennsylvania and Texas. The venues will feature immersive experiences tied to Netflix shows, themed restaurants and branded merchandise – including products such as As Ever jam and tea, which are made by a factory contracted to Netflix, which makes similar products for their aristocracy drama series Bridgerton. The source added: 'People point to 'Polo was a flop', but it's worth remembering that Harry & Meghan was the biggest documentary on Netflix ever in 2022. That alone could have afforded them 50 flops – and it still would have been worth it for Netflix. 'With Love, Meghan has been worth it too. It's done really well, especially in America which is the only place that matters.'

Were 'Shakespearean' Benedict and 'no faffing' Olivia thorns in each other's side in a REAL War of the Roses?

It was one of the most successful movies of the Eighties, a dark comedy that tells the story of a bitter divorce with neither party giving an inch. But in the much anticipated remake of The War Of The Roses, the real battle appears to have been behind the scenes between Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. In The Roses, they take on the lead roles, played first time round by Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. Sources say that despite the actors being 'very keen' to work together, all was not well during filming, with Cumberbatch's serious 'method' acting at odds with Ms Colman's 'no-nonsense, let's get on with it' attitude. One insider told The Mail on Sunday: 'The Roses was supposed to be a fairly easy and straightforward one to film - about a husband and a wife who don't like one another. 'But at times Benedict was treating it like it was some kind of Shakespearean play, wanting to seriously connect with his part, which is totally fair enough. 'Olivia is very much the type to just get on with it, no faffing. It's a comedy - it's like there was a lot of overthinking going on. 'It led to the chemistry between them not exactly being the best. It was a comedy, like a romcom, not the airy fairy-type stuff Benedict has done before.' A spokesman for Cumberbatch attempted to play down the issues between the pair. She said they were both keen to take part in The Roses, which will be out in cinemas next month, because they were friends who had never worked together before. Following filming, which took place in both Salcombe, south Devon and Los Angeles, it is not known if they are still as close. Oscar-winner Ms Colman, 51, is one of Britain's most decorated actresses and has appeared in a wide range of productions from ITV drama Broadchurch to Netflix series The Crown, where she played the late Queen. She won a best actress Oscar in 2019 for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite. Harrow-educated Cumberbatch, 49, who has been nominated for an Oscar twice, began his acting career with the New Shakespeare Company before going on to star in the West End and big-budget Hollywood films. One industry source said: 'You only have to spend a small amount of time in Olivia and Benedict's company to realise that they are very different types of people.' Ms Colman's agent didn't respond when asked if she wished to comment.
