Messi scores twice as Miami defeats Montreal 4-1
Luis Suárez directed a long ball from Tomás Avilés to Messi with a header, who had time to gather the ball, dribble into the box and finish with his left foot to the far post to make it 2-1 in the 40th minute.
It was the first M:S game in over a month for Miami while competing in the Club World Cup. PSG eliminated Miami 4-0 last week.
Prince Owusu gave Montreal (3-13-5) a quick lead two minutes into the game.
Tadeo Allende, assisted by Messi, scored in the 33rd minute to tie the game for Miami (9-3-5), which has won three straight, including a 3-2 win over Montreal at home on May 28.
Telasco Segovia scored in the 60th minute and Messi connected again two minutes later, again weaving through a pack of Montreal defenders. Messi has 12 goals in 14 MSL games this season.
Óscar Ustari made seven saves for Miami after a Messi giveway gave Owusu an easy goal.
Miami (8-3-5) has won back-to-back games — including a 3-2 victory over Montreal at home on May 28 — and is unbeaten in three straight.

Caissie homers as the Cubs hold off the Brewers for a 6-4 win in doubleheader opener
CHICAGO (AP) — Owen Caissie homered and drove in three runs, and the Chicago Cubs held off the Milwaukee Brewers for a 6-4 win in the opener of a split doubleheader on Tuesday. Willi Castro also went deep as Chicago won for the third time in four games. Four Cubs relievers combined for 3 2/3 innings of two-hit ball after Matthew Boyd (12-6) departed in the sixth. Chicago (71-54) pulled within eight games of NL Central-leading Milwaukee (79-46). The teams were originally scheduled for a doubleheader on Monday, but the second game was postponed by rain. Christian Yelich homered for Milwaukee, and Sal Frelick had two hits and two RBIs. It was just the third loss for the Brewers in their last 21 games. Chicago built a 5-0 lead on Caissie's two-run single in the first and Castro's three-run shot off Chad Patrick (3-8) in the third. It was Castro's first homer since he was acquired in a July 31 trade with Minnesota. But Milwaukee quickly started chipping away at the deficit. Yelich opened the fourth with his 26th homer, and Frelick singled home Brandon Lockridge in the fifth. Frelick added another RBI single in a two-run sixth. Caissie then gave the Cubs a boost with his first major league homer, a 381-foot drive to left-center off Shelby Miller that made it 6-4 in the bottom half of the sixth. The 23-year-old Caissie singled in the seventh inning of Monday's 7-0 loss in the series opener for his first big league hit. Caleb Thielbar and Drew Pomeranz each pitched an inning for Chicago before Daniel Palencia handled the ninth for his 17th save in 19 chances. Key moment The Brewers had runners on second and third with two out in the sixth when Brad Keller struck out Caleb Durbin swinging, preserving the Cubs' 5-4 lead. Key stat The Cubs improved to 5-5 in the season series against the Brewers. Up next Brandon Woodruff (4-0, 2.06 ERA) starts for Milwaukee in the second game, and fellow right-hander Jameson Taillon (7-6, 4.44) pitches for Chicago. ___ AP MLB:

Nik Bonitto returns from bone spur removal and insists that contract talks aren't bogging him down
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — All-Pro outside linebacker Nik Bonitto is back on the field and still unruffled by protracted negotiations on a contract extension. Bonitto practiced Tuesday for the first time since having a bone spur removed from the top of his right foot last week following a spectacular preseason debut. If all goes well, Bonitto will play Saturday at New Orleans in the Broncos' final tune-up for their Sept. 7 opener against the Tennessee Titans. Bonitto played a dozen snaps in the Broncos' 30-9 win at San Francisco on Aug. 9 when he showed once again that a looming contract extension isn't bothering him. He sacked Mac Jones on first down, forced him to step into a sack by John Franklin-Meyers on second down and then forced him into an incompletion to avoid a 25-yard loss on third down. 'He did ruin that whole series,' said 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. 'Bonitto is a hell of a player.' Bonitto came up limping after his 12-snap debut, however, and a few days later he underwent surgery to remove the bone spur. 'It was just a thing that showed up in the 49ers (joint) practice' on Aug. 7, Bonitto said. 'And it was kind of bothering me, bothering me, I was trying to fight through it in the game.' Bonitto said he decided to heed the advice of coach Sean Payton and the Broncos' medical staff and have the bone spur removed during camp rather than deal with it during the season. 'It was just something where we could either keep trying to fight through this throughout the season or have the procedure done and not worry about it,' Bonitto said. Although he appeared to move around well at practice, Bonitto said he's still on the mend. A two-time All-American at Oklahoma and a second-round pick in 2023, Bonitto is in line for a big pay raise after his breakout 2024 season when he helped the Broncos lead the league with 63 sacks and go from 27th in points allowed in 2023 to third last year. Bonitto set career highs with 48 tackles, 24 quarterback hits, 13 1/2 sacks, 16 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, three pass breakups, an interception and two defensive touchdowns. He earned a Pro Bowl berth and a second-team All-Pro selection. The Broncos entered training camp with a trio of veterans in line for big contract extensions and they quickly got two of them done. Wide receiver Courtland Sutton signed a four-year, $92 million deal and All-Pro defensive tackle Zach Allen signed a four-year, $102 million extension on Aug. 2. Bonitto is still waiting for his big payday. Negotiations are 'going well,' he said. 'I feel like there's been good communication on both sides. I think it's just my agent (Tory Dandy of CAA Football), I feel like he's one of the best in the game. I feel like I gotta trust what he's doing. And knowing how they feel about me upstairs, I feel like something will get done. It's just a matter of when." Complicating the timeline is the unsigned status of Cincinnati's Trey Hendrickson, last season's sacks leader, and Dallas' Micah Parsons, leaving the edge rusher market still in flux. Bonitto demurred when asked if he preferred to wait for one of those deals to get done, and he said he doesn't necessarily need to sign an extension before the start of the season. 'I mean, at the end of the day I'm still under contract for another year," he said. "So, yeah, I would like to get the contract done, but that's the least of my worries, honestly. I just want to compete for a championship this year, do all the things that we have set out to do as a team and as a defense.' Asked what his goals for 2025 are, Bonitto said, 'We want to have the No. 1 defense and as far as individual, just be better than last year.' ___ AP NFL:

Texas' Arch Manning pushes back on grandfather Archie Manning's NFL draft claim
Texas football quarterback Arch Manning is 11 days away from his debut as the Longhorns' full-time starting quarterback vs. No. 2 Ohio State, kicking off a highly anticipated road to the NFL draft. But on Tuesday, Aug. 19, the Longhorns' first-year starter had to address his future plans after his grandfather, former Ole Miss and New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning, said last month that NFL teams shouldn't expect his grandson to be available next April. "Yeah, I don't know where he got that from," Arch Manning told assembled media on Aug. 19. "He texted me and apologized about that, but I'm really just taking it day by day right now." REQURIED READING: Arch Manning expectations have Texas at No. 1 in preseason poll. Are we sure he is ready? Archie Manning had previously told Texas Monthly he doesn't anticipate his grandson leaving Texas after just one season starting for the Longhorns. "Arch isn't going to do that," Archie Manning said. "He'll be at Texas." Arch Manning is eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft, as he has been out of high school for three seasons. The former No. 1-ranked player in the 2023 recruiting class, according to 247Sports Composite, redshirted his true freshman season with the Longhorns in 2023. Archie Manning exhausted his eligibility at Ole Miss before going No. 2 overall to the New Orleans Saints in the 1971 NFL Draft. Arch Manning's uncles, Peyton and Eli Manning, also exhausted their eligibility before being selected No. 1 overall in the 1998 and 2004 NFL drafts, respectively. The 6-foot-4 quarterback started two games last season for Texas while Quinn Ewers was out with an injury. In 10 games last year, which included coming in for occasional snaps in the postseason, Arch Manning completed 67.8% of his passes for 939 yards and nine touchdowns. His first task as the Longhorns' starting quarterback will be a challenging one, as Texas is set to travel to No. 2 Ohio State in Week 1 to open the season. On top of having to deal with the Buckeyes' overall defense, Arch Manning will have to contend against an Ohio State secondary that includes star safety Caleb Downs, one of the top players at his position in the country. Texas is scheduled for a noon ET kickoff against Ohio State on Saturday, Aug. 30 in Columbus, Ohio at Ohio Stadium. The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast.
