Turkey rallies for 2-1 win in friendly against US, which loses 3rd straight under Pochettino
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Turkey took advantage of a sloppy defense to beat the United States 2-1 in a rainy friendly on Saturday, dealing the Americans their third straight loss as Arda Güler and Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored in a 2-minute, 20-second span midway through the first half.
Jack McGlynn scored 59 seconds in for the U.S., which was missing many regulars as coach Mauricio Pochettino revamped his roster following a dismal performance at the
CONCACAF Nations League final four in March
.
With a year to go before co-hosting the World Cup, the U.S. plays Switzerland on Tuesday at Nashville, Tennessee, in another friendly, then opens the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Trinidad and Tobago on June 15.
The Americans dropped to 5-4 under
Pochettino
, who took over after
first-round elimination last year's Copa America
led the U.S. Soccer Federation to
fire coach Gregg Berhalter
. They have
lost three straight for the second time in a year
.
Pochettino changed eight starters from the
Nations League loss to Canada in March
, keeping only left back Max Arfsten, winger Diego Luna and forward Patrick Agyemang.
Defender Alex Freeman, a 20-year-old son of former NFL All-Pro receiver Antonio Freeman, started in his U.S. debut. Matt Freese, a starter at Major League Soccer's New York City, made his debut in goal. Matt Turner, the usual starter since 2022, didn't play for Crystal Palace after March 1.
McGlynn scored when he ran onto a pass from Malik Tilman, took several touches, cut inside and curled a left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area inside the far post for his second goal in five international appearances. It was the earliest U.S. goal since Shaq Moore scored 20 seconds in against Canada during the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Turkey tied it in the 24th minute when Freese tapped the ball to Johnny Cardoso, whose pass ricocheted off a leg and past Freese for Güler's fifth international goal.
Then in the 27th, Miles Robinson tried to clear Oğuz Aydın's shot and the ball went to Aktürkoğlu, who one-timed a bouncing shot past Freese for his 12th international goal and sixth in eight games.
Turkey goalkeeper Berke Özer also made his international debut. Preparing for the start of its World Cup qualifying campaign in September, Turkey has six wins, one loss and one draw in its last eight games.

Tottenham return is unrealistic
United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino has ruled himself out the running to replace Ange Postecoglou, saying a return to Tottenham at this point is "not realistic". Postecoglou, 59, was sacked on Friday, despite leading the club to their first piece of silverware in 17 years with victory in the Europa League. Advertisement Pochettino, whose five-year stay at the club came to an end in November 2019, has been linked with a return to Tottenham. But the Argentine, who was appointed US manager in October 2024, says he is happy in his new role. "Today it's not realistic," said Pochettino, 53. "Look where I am. Look where we (his backroom staff) are. The answer is so clear. "I think, since I left in 2019, my name has always been on the list [of rumours]. "I've seen the rumours, we are 100 coaches on the list. Don't be worried about that. "If something happens [in the future], you for sure will see, but I am so happy in this moment and we cannot talk about this type of thing." Advertisement Pochettino was speaking after the United States were beaten 2-1 by Turkey in Connecticut. It was the side's third straight defeat, leaving Pochettino with five wins and four losses from nine matches in charge. The United States are hosting the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico. During his time in north London, Pochettino helped Spurs reach the final of the Champions League in 2019, as well as to a second-place finish in the Premier League in 2017. Brentford manager Thomas Frank is a leading contender to replace Postecoglou, while there is interest in Fulham coach Marco Silva.

Mariners star Julio Rodríguez appears OK after being knocked out of an 8-6 loss to Angels
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Seattle Mariners slugger Julio Rodríguez was unable to dodge a grounder in the third inning of Saturday night's 8-6 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. Rodríguez was attempting to steal third base when Randy Arozarena's 98-mph grounder that appeared headed through the shortstop hole hit Rodríguez on top of his right ankle, knocking him out of the game. The two-time American League All-Star got better news later in the evening when X-rays on his ankle were negative, and Rodríguez was listed as day-to-day with a contusion. 'It's kind of a day-to-day thing, we'll see how it goes,' Seattle manager Dan Wilson said after his team's fifth consecutive loss. 'But it could have been a lot worse.' Rodríguez, who is batting .254 with 10 homers and 32 RBIs in 61 games, had singled and scored on Cal Raleigh's three-run homer in the first inning and singled and stole second base to open the third. With one out and Arozarena batting against Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz, Rodríguez took off for third. He heard the crack of Arozarena's bat, but the ball struck him just as he was about to turn his head to look for it. Arozarena was credited with a single. Rodríguez was ruled out and remained on the ground near the third-base coaching box for a minute or two before being escorted back to the dugout. 'At first, it was very painful — like I couldn't really feel my foot a whole lot or move it a whole lot,' he said. 'But after they started treating it, the swelling went down, and everything started reacting better right away. So that made me feel really good. … There's a high chance that I should be in the lineup (Sunday).' Rodríguez's absence was felt immediately. Leody Taveras took over in center field and misjudged Zach Neto's flare to lead off the bottom of the third. The ball dropped in front of him and then bounced away for a single and an error. Neto scored on first baseman Rowdy Tellez's fielding error, and Chris Taylor followed with a catchable drive to the gap in right-center. But Taveras mistimed his leap on the warning track, and the ball clanged off the palm of his glove hand for an RBI double that tied the score at 4 and erased the Angels' four-run second-inning deficit. Angels center fielder Jo Adell broke the tie with his second homer of the game in the fourth, and the Angels pulled away with runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. 'That's a tough situation (for Taveras) coming off the bench there, and the ball finds him right away,' Wilson said. 'He's been so good for us, and he's run a lot of balls down out there, so just a tougher night for him.' ___ AP MLB:
