Over 20,000 companies use Sirim's testing, expertise every year

KULAI: It is estimated that more than 20,000 companies use Sirim's testing and expertise each year, said Sirim Bhd president and group chief executive officer Datuk Dr Ahmad Sabirin Arshad.
He said this included the manufacturing, plastics, road construction and apparel sectors.
"We have the expertise and facilities to conduct testing and verification at Sirim, apart from that, we also collaborate with all government agencies involved.
"This is to ensure that what is used by the industries, including in terms of construction and so on, is safe for use," he said at the '2025 Sirim Silaturasa' event at Sirim Johor today.
Johor State Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han was also present.
Ahmad Sabirin, who was asked to comment on industries that utilised Sirim's expertise, also said that Sirim had an artificial intelligence (AI) centre, which, among other things, provided training and guidance to industry players through a programme sponsored by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti).
"Through this programme, we are targeting industries that use AI under the Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) ecosystem.
"So, we want to ensure that this year, 40 companies will receive guidance and next year the government is targeting around 3,000 companies over three years, with the companies targeted to become mentors to smaller firms," he said.
He said the initiative, which was supported by the government, would ensure that Malaysia continued to progress in line with the rapid development of technology.
Earlier, the 2025 Sirim Silaturasa event, held in conjunction with Sirim's 50th anniversary, provided an opportunity for industry players, government agencies, media representatives and academic partners to interact and build closer ties through interactive engagement sessions.

‘Malaysia expands global trade, firm on domestic interests'

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is deepening its engagement with emerging economies while maintaining a firm stance in trade talks with the US, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday. Speaking at the monthly assembly of the Prime Minister's Department, Anwar reaffirmed that while Malaysia welcomes foreign investment – including from the US – it will not compromise on key domestic priorities such as the Bumiputera agenda and local procurement policies. 'These are longstanding national policies that are non-negotiable, even if international partners view them differently,' he said. 'Malaysia values its relationship with the US, but certain matters, such as affirmative action and local industry participation, are not up for debate.' Anwar said Malaysia is actively broadening its global trade footprint to reduce dependence on any single country, pointing to strengthening ties with BRICS nations, the Middle East and Africa. He noted that national oil and gas company Petronas has begun operations in Brazil following a personal invitation from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who offered Malaysia a stake in one of the country's major oil fields. On the automotive front, Anwar said national car maker Proton has successfully entered the Egyptian market with the backing of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, a development that contributed to a 34% increase in bilateral trade over the past year. 'These initiatives are part of our strategy to diversify trade and investment partnerships, and to strengthen economic resilience,' he added. Looking ahead, Anwar said the upcoming Asean Summit in October is expected to draw leaders from countries including Italy, Canada, South Africa, Brazil and possibly the US. He noted that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had indicated President Donald Trump might attend the regional gathering. He stressed that Malaysia will continue to play an active role on the global stage while safeguarding its core interests at home.

Several world leaders to attend 47th Asean Summit, says Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: Several world leaders including those from Asia, Europe, Canada, the United States, Africa and Latin America are expected to attend the 47th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Speaking at a meeting with the Prime Minister's Department staff here on Monday (July 21), Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said that so far, among those who have expressed their commitment to attend are leaders from Italy, the European Union, Canada and the United States. "It (the Asean Summit) will be a major international conference for Malaysia," he said. On July 8, Anwar said several heads of government from outside Asean had confirmed their attendance at the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits scheduled to be held from Oct 26 to 28. Among the leaders who have confirmed their attendance are Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whom Anwar met in Rome on July 3, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is also currently President of the G20 Group. Anwar said that his visits abroad were not for tourism, but rather in Malaysia's capacity as Asean Chair this year, apart from fulfilling invitations from several world leaders. "I am among the prime ministers who have travelled abroad the most. Coincidentally, Malaysia is Asean chairman this year," he said Expressing confidence in the services of civil servants including the national security forces based on the excellent performance shown during the recent Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Asean-China Summits, Anwar is confident that the Asean Summit in October would be held successfully. "If you look at the performance (of the services) of civil servants, police, Immigration Department and airports at Asean-GCC and Asean-China, I am confident in our ability to provide the best for our country," he said. Anwar said the confidence was based on Malaysia's improved ranking in the World Competitiveness Report by the Institute for Management Development, from 34th in 2024 to 23rd in 2025. The Prime Minister said the improved ranking also reflected the international community's confidence in Malaysia's administrative capabilities. The 46th Asean Summit held in Kuala Lumpur in May also featured the second Asean GCC as well as the first-ever Asean-GCC-China Summit. Malaysia as the 2025 Asean Chairmanship with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability' hosted the 46th Asean Summit and related meetings from May 22 to 27. – Bernama
