The meaning of the protests in Los Angeles

Economista day ago

THE MOOD changed by the moment. On June 8th a woman hugged her two young daughters on a bridge overlooking the 101 freeway in downtown Los Angeles. Vendors sold Mexican flags and protesters adjusted the rhythms of their chants. 'Move ICE get out the way' morphed into 'Donald Trump, let's be clear, immigrants are welcome here'. It felt like a neighbourhood block party—if block parties encouraged graffiti. But chants turned to screams as police exploded flash-bang grenades to clear the road. The two young girls grimaced and hustled away. California Highway Patrol officers paced in riot gear, their less-lethal weapons aimed at the crowd. Some protesters lobbed bottles at police, who dodged the projectiles. Nearby, several Waymo driverless cars were set aflame.

Influencer stabbed to death in shopping centre by 'cleaner who felt rejected'

Tais Bruna de Castro, 36, was having lunch at a mall in São Paulo, Brazil, when she was allegedly ambushed by a janitor who had developed feelings for her A Brazilian book influencer and travel agent has been tragically killed in a horrific stabbing incident. Tais Bruna de Castro, 36, was having lunch on Monday, June 2, at the Beco Fino shopping centre in the Jundiaí neighbourhood of São Paulo when she was was stabbed to death. ‌ Without warning, the knifeman launched a frenzied knife attack, stabbing Bruna more than 20 times in front of shocked bystanders. Claudio Elizeu, a 40-year-old cleaner at the same complex, was arrested at the scene, CNN Brazil reports. ‌ According to local police, Elizeu, who was employed as a janitor at the mall, told investigators that he killed Tais because she had no interest in pursuing a relationship with him. Authorities say there is no evidence that the two shared a close personal relationship. READ MORE: Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner's chilling message to other paedophile uncovered After the stabbing, Elizeu allegedly broke into an office inside the shopping centre, where he smashed windows and furniture before police arrested him, the Daily Mail reports. Bruna was declared dead at the scene. The case is being investigated under the country's femicide protocol, with her senseless killing being just another example of the high levels of gender-based violence in Latin America. Bruna was well known among literary circles online. She ran a blog titled Reader Fashion , where she shared book recommendations, literary commentary, and engaged with a growing community of followers. She also worked as a travel agent in the same shopping centre where the attack took place. Following her death, Bruna's family posted a heartfelt message on her Instagram account, which had over 8,000 followers, thanking her audience for their support and honouring her passion for literature. ‌ "This week, our dear Tais Bruna, the owner of this profile, left us in a very sad and unbelievable way," the post read. "'Reader Fashion' was one of her greatest joys. Talking about books, recommending new reads, and interacting with you brought light into her days. We, her family, sincerely thank you for the messages and prayers. Tais, we will love you forever." Her death is part of a disturbing trend of violence against women, particularly influencers and public figures, in Latin America. ‌ Just weeks before Bruna's murder, Colombian model and influencer María José Estupiñán, 22, was shot at point-blank range by a gunman disguised as a delivery driver. The shooting occurred outside her home in the northeastern city of Cúcuta, and was captured on chilling CCTV footage. Her mother can be heard screaming, 'No, not my daughter!' as the gunman fled the scene. In another recent case, Mexican TikTok star and beautician Valeria Márquez, 23, was gunned down while live streaming from her salon, Blossom the Beauty Lounge, in the state of Jalisco. The graphic footage shows her looking out the window moments before gunshots rang out, striking her in the chest and head. These incidents have sparked renewed calls for more robust protections for women and public figures in the region. Advocacy groups continue to demand urgent action from governments to address the systemic violence that disproportionately targets women, both online and offline.

Israel snubbed Trump plea not to strike Iran after President said just hours before that an attack could 'blow' nuclear deal talks

Israel snubbed US president Donald Trump 's plea not to strike Iran just hours after he said that an attack would 'blow' nuclear deal talks. Overnight, Israel launched a series of 'pre-emptive' strikes across Iran, targeting nuclear and military facilities Operation Rising Lion, involving more than 200 Israeli jets, targeted a facility in Natanz and the capital Tehran. There are claims Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander Hossein Salami was killed in the strikes. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has warned Israel should expect 'severe punishment' in response. Just a few hours before Israel's massive strike on Iran's nuclear and military facilities, Trump starkly warned Netanyahu not to interfere with the nation. When asked at the White House about the possibility of a strike on Iran, Trump said: 'I don't want to say imminent, but it looks like something that could very well happen. 'It's very simple - not complicated. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. Other than that, I want them to be successful. We'll help them be successful. We'll trade with them, we'll do whatever's necessary. 'I want to have an agreement with Iran. We're fairly close. As long as there is an agreement, I don't want [Israel] going in because I think that would blow it. 'There's a chance of massive conflict. We have a lot of American people in this area, and I said "we've gotta tell them to get out because something could happen soon, and I don't want to be the one who didn't give them any warning." 'We've had very good discussions with Iran. Whether or not we get there, I can't tell you - but it'll happen soon.

South African assets sink on risk aversion after Israel's strike on Iran

JOHANNESBURG, June 13 (Reuters) - South Africa's rand and government bonds fell steeply in early trade on Friday, after Israeli military strikes on Iran drove investors toward safe havens. At 0657 GMT, the risk-sensitive rand traded at 18.04 against the dollar , 1.6% weaker than Thursday's close. The rand had been on a strong run for weeks, helped by local coalition partners resolving a budget dispute, talk of a lower inflation target and strong precious metal prices. The escalation in hostilities in the Middle East - a major oil-producing region - adds a fresh layer of uncertainty for financial markets at a time of pressure on the global economy from U.S. President Donald Trump's erratic trade policies. No major domestic data releases are due on Friday, but next week local consumer inflation (ZACPIY=ECI), opens new tab and retail sales (ZARET=ECI), opens new tab figures will be published. The yield on South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond was up 16.5 basis points to 10.25%.
