Where is the vision to provide jobs from green energy projects?

Where is the vision to provide jobs from green energy projects?

Both Westminster and Holyrood focus on the production of green energy but fail to provide the major benefits of manufacturing the components that would provide work for thousands. There is no ambition, vision or plan for our manufacturing industry but they will be providing millions in funding for rich energy companies while manufacturing is bereft of work.

The public will be sickened
The decision in principle by the Scottish Government to grant planning permission for a completely unnecessary massive offshore wind farm, Berwick Bank, to be constructed in an environmentally sensitive location beggars belief, especially given the scale of the well-judged opposition which has simply been ignored.
We note that "SSE Renewables will have to provide a plan to counter any impact the wind farm may have on seabirds to be approved by ministers", but this is thin gruel, especially as SSE is quoted as admitting in its own environmental impact assessment that more than 31,000 bird collisions are estimated during its lifespan. What will its proposed "mitigation" provide? It is to be hoped that it will be something better than the farcically inappropriate plans that Equinor has put in place to construct an inappropriately sited nesting habitat for Arctic terns hundreds of miles from its proposed massive wind farm extension off the coast of Norfolk. Whatever it is, it is difficult to see how it can provide more than a small sticking plaster for a deliberate act of ecocide that should never have been granted permission
The Scottish Government may well have shot itself in the foot. Even people who would not normally object to a wind farm are sickened by this decision. The sleeping giant in the name of Joe Public has awakened.

Energy transition is a farce
The energy transition of Scotland (and the UK) is veering from ambition to farce. Most people acknowledge climate change's reality and support action, but current policies are incoherent and self-defeating. Shutting down North Sea oil and gas while obsessing over intermittent wind energy leaves us all paying a steep price.
That price is staggering. Our energy costs, the highest in Europe and roughly four times those in the US, strangle industry, export our carbon footprint to high coal-burning nations, deter investment, and undermine ambitions to lead in high-tech sectors like artificial intelligence. Data centres, vital for AI, demand vast electricity and water supplies – ambitions that will vanish without secure, affordable power.
Wind power has a role, but its limitations are stark. Intermittent turbines require 100% backup like costly, potentially hazardous battery parks, idling gas plants, and nearly doubled transmission lines scarring the Highlands. We must also confront the 'green' components' toxic waste and China's dominance of the supply chain, leaving us strategically vulnerable.
Meanwhile, a gold rush mentality prevails. Landowners and foreign developers reap fortunes, communities receive scant 'shiny beads', and massive infrastructure rises despite local objections. This mishmash of ideas, driven by political vanity rather than strategy, lacks joined-up thinking.
In the First World War, people spoke of 'lions led by donkeys'. Today, we have citizens and businesses led by donkey politicians, stumbling through an energy policy that is economically ruinous and strategically reckless.
The solution is obvious: a balanced energy mix: renewables, nuclear for baseload, and domestic hydrocarbons (including 'clean' cheap coal for specific industries like steel and AI) to bridge intermittent failures and the high cost of renewables. Without this, net zero risks collapsing under its own absurdities.
Ian Lakin, Aberdeen.
Labour's brass neck
Surely a special brass neck award is due to the Labour Party on its gaslighting of Scotland? In June Rachel Reeves informed Equinor, the Norwegian energy giant, that the extra tax on Scotland's oil and gas industry would be spent on carbon capture; £22 billion is to go to carbon capture in England while Scotland has been promised a miserly £200 million.
The utterly useless Scottish Secretary Ian Murray is bragging of a 'massive jobs opportunity for Scotland' over defence spending, when the bulk of any new money will go to building submarines in England. Typically Scotland has received only about half of its per capita spend (4% for 8.2% of the population) due over decades (Whitehall even stopped publishing the stats because they were so bad) and the money usually goes to big corporations rather than local companies. Isn't it time that these pronouncements were fact-checked by the media, and the political operators making them were put on the spot, because they are so out of line with the truth?

Disgraceful Festival bans
Speaking on Sky News, well-known actor Brian Cox has once again criticised Donald Trump and reiterated his desire for Scottish independence. He might be in Edinburgh right now but normally he resides in America. This does not help.
Additionally he has waded in to say he abhors "cancel culture" but the very festival he is appearing at has done just that by banning two comedians because they were Jewish. It has allowed actors in favour of Palestine without a problem.
Mr Cox can perhaps see the dilemma here? Can we expect him to speak out over these cancellations and, in fact, can we expect his beloved SNP Government to speak out too? It is not a good look for the [[Edinburgh]] Festival which ought to be promoting Scottish values including fairness.
Dr Gerald Edwards, Glasgow.
Why heed Netanyahu?
Benjamin Netanyahu continues to enact his policy of ethnic cleansing unabated in Gaza using starvation and a variety of other methods. It beggars belief that Rebecca McCurdy obviously considers such an individual's opinion on the future of [[Gaza]] of some worth ("Why PM missed mark on recognising state of [[Palestine]]", [[The Herald]], July 31), citing that the recognition of a Palestinian state would be rewarding Hamas.
We have surely arrived at a dangerous and surreal place when we are asked to heed the advice of someone indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court, regarding the very people he is killing.
Khalida Rasul, Glasgow.
Terror does have its rewards
With spectacular irony, the Israeli regime describes the recognition of a Palestinian state as a reward for terrorism. They should know! For 80 years they have inflicted terror on the Palestinian people, culminating now in the murder of 60,000 people. If that is not an act of terror, what is?
This piece of nonsense is repeatedly echoed by the BBC and our print media. And Israel has been richly rewarded for it in the form of land acquisition and military support from the United States and the United Kingdom. Clearly, terror has its rewards.

Why change UK policy?
For whatever good reason, the UK Government's policy for years has been that it doesn't recognise the existence of a state of [[Palestine]]. What has changed to persuade it that its previous justification for that policy no longer exists? Trying to influence [[Israel]] to do something is a different matter unrelated to that justification which surely remains in place?
Prime Minister Starmer therefore needs to explain precisely what he believes allows him now, all of a sudden, to dismiss the previous justification for the long standing non-recognition policy. It would be helpful also if at the same time he clarified the borders of such a state he intends to recognise and his intention to maintain the current UK proscription of Hamas.
Finally, he needs to address the intervention by 40 peers (including seven KCs) questioning the legitimacy of his intentions.
All in all, it is beginning to look like another u-turn is likely in September. Even if recognition actually does happen, it will be pointless as Keir Starmer must know [[Israel]] will simply ignore it. History will judge it as no more than an ill-thought-out party political stunt in an attempt to placate his backbenchers and shore up Labour's Muslim vote on which the election of some of them depends.

Cross-Channel migrants to be detained as France treaty comes into force

The deal, which has now been approved by the European Commission, means the UK will be able to send people crossing the Channel in small boats back to France in exchange for asylum seekers with ties to Britain. It also means that anyone arriving in a small boat can be detained immediately, and space has been set aside at immigration removal centres in the expectation that detentions will begin within days. The Prime Minister said the ratification of the treaty will 'send a clear message – if you come here illegally on a small boat you will face being sent back to France'. But opposition parties have criticised the deal amid reports that the pilot scheme will see only 50 people a week returned to France while this year has seen a weekly average of more than 800 people make the crossing. The deal has also been criticised by refugee charities, which have urged the Government to provide more safe, legal routes for asylum seekers instead. Ministers have so far declined to say how many people could be returned under the deal, and insist that if the pilot is successful the figure will increase. Under the terms of the agreement, announced during French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit last month, adults arriving on small boats will face being returned to France if their asylum claim is inadmissible. In exchange, the same number of people will be able to come to the UK on a new legal route, provided they have not attempted a crossing before and subject to documentation and security checks. The Home Office said it had also learned from the 'lengthy legal challenges' over the previous government's Rwanda scheme and would 'robustly defend' any attempts to block removal through the courts. It is the first such deal with France, with the pilot scheme set to run until June 2026, pending a longer-term agreement. Sir Keir said the deal was 'The product of months of grown-up diplomacy delivering real results for British people'. He added: 'The days of gimmicks and broken promises are over – we will restore order to our borders with the seriousness and competence the British people deserve.' Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said it was 'an important step towards undermining the business model of the organised crime gangs that are behind these crossings – undermining their claims that those who travel to the UK illegally can't be returned to France'. Ratification of the deal comes as both Britain and France battle to bring the small boats problem under control, with 2025 on course to be a record year for crossings. Some 25,436 people have already made the journey this year, according to PA news agency analysis of Home Office figures – 49% higher than at the same point in 2024. The issue has also sparked concern that a series of protests outside hotels housing asylum seekers could lead to public disorder similar to last year's riots. On Monday, the Home Office announced it was providing another £100 million to tackle people smuggling and would introduce new powers to seize devices from people suspected of facilitating crossings. Ministers have also launched a crackdown on illegal working in an effort to reduce the 'pull factors' said to be encouraging people to make the journey, while French authorities have changed their guidance to allow police officers to intercept boats while they are in shallow waters. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp attacked the plans, saying they would return 'just 6% of illegal arrivals' and 'make no difference whatsoever'. He added: 'The Rwanda removals deterrent, under which 100% of illegal arrivals would be removed, was ready to go last summer but Labour cancelled it just days before it was due to start with no proper replacement plan. As a result, this year so far has been the worst ever for illegal immigrants crossing the Channel. 'Only removing all illegal immigrants upon arrival will provide the necessary deterrent to stop the crossings. This is the Conservative plan, but Labour is too weak to implement it and as a result they have lost control of our borders.' While the Conservatives' Rwanda plan was in theory uncapped, it was expected to take only around 1,000 asylum seekers in its first five years of operation thanks to limited capacity in the East African nation. The plan, which Sir Keir had previously dismissed as a 'gimmick', was scrapped as one of the first acts of the incoming Labour Government last year.

Police Scotland overtime bill hits £31.5m as union warns of chronic staff shortage

The new figures are published today in 1919 Magazine. Police overtime has soared to £31.5m a year amid warnings the single force is facing a 'chronic' shortage of staff. ‌ The total taxpayer bill works out at £85,000 a day and covers police officers and staff. ‌ Official figures from May revealed there were 16,553 full-time equivalent officers, down from 17,496 in 2013. ‌ Police union figures have warned for months that the fall will lead to an increase in overtime to ensure crimes are properly investigated. According to figures published today in 1919 Magazine, £28.15m was spent on overtime for officers in 2024/25, plus an additional £3.4m for police staff. The combined £31.5m is a 10% rise on the previous year. ‌ Figures for the current year will not be known for some time, but the costs of policing President Tump's visit are expected to push up overtime costs again. Scottish Police Federation general secretary David Kennedy said: 'As demand on policing continues to increase – whether through major events, public safety operations, or everyday calls for service – there simply are not enough officers to meet the workload within normal working hours. 'The reality is that overtime is no longer a contingency – it has become a necessity to maintain even the most basic levels of public safety. This is unsustainable, both financially and in terms of officer wellbeing. ‌ 'Officers are regularly being asked to sacrifice their rest days, family time, and personal health to plug gaps caused by years of underinvestment in policing. We cannot continue to rely on a shrinking workforce to deliver a growing remit. 'The rising cost of overtime is not a budget management issue – it is a symptom of a wider crisis in police numbers that must be addressed urgently through meaningful investment in recruitment, retention, and support for serving officers.' Labour MSP Pauline McNeill: 'These eye-watering figures lay bare the immense pressure Police Scotland is under. Police officer numbers have collapsed over recent years and big events have piled pressure onto remaining officers. ‌ 'There is no evidence that the Scottish Government is taking any serious steps to address this, therefore this is likely to continue. Increasing reliance on overtime is costing Police Scotland thousands of pounds a day and exhausting police officers. ' Police officers cannot keep being forced to go above and beyond to paper over the cracks of SNP failure – the SNP must work with Police Scotland to ensure it has the officers it needs to keep our communities safe.' Lib Dem MSP Liam McArthur said: 'SNP ministers pushed through the creation of a single national force with the promise of significant cost savings which could be invested elsewhere in the service. Instead we have seen falling officer numbers, police counters closing and officers run ragged. ‌ A Scottish Government spokesperson said: 'We are investing a record £1.64 billion for policing this year, and our continued investment enabled Police Scotland to take on more recruits in the last financial year than at any time since 2013, with further intakes planned throughout 2025. 'Scotland continues to have more police officers per capita than England and Wales and recorded crime has fallen by more than half since 1991.' Deputy Chief Constable Alan Speirs said: 'The nature of policing is unpredictable, and overtime is a flexible mechanism which can help to ensure we maintain an effective service for all our communities. "Policing is relentless and right across the country, officers and staff are working incredibly hard to keep people safe and the organisation is deeply grateful for all their hard work.'

Justice Secretary faces complaint about SNP material on taxpayer-funded website

A spokesperson for Angela Constance said "action was taken" after issues about her MSP website were brought to her attention. Justice Secretary Angela Constance has been accused of breaching Holyrood rules over SNP material on her taxpayer-funded website. ‌ A complaint was lodged on Friday alleging SNP logos were used on Angela Constance 's MSP website, which must not promote a political party. The material has been taken down. ‌ A spokesperson for Constance said: "Upon being made aware of this issue, action was taken to rectify the matter." ‌ Constance is a key member of John Swinney's Cabinet and the SNP MSP for Almond Valley. Holyrood rules say that publications funded from parliamentary resources must not relate to an MSP 's work as a Minister. Party political logos are also not allowed on MSP websites funded by Holyrood. ‌ The complaint alleges Constance has breached the policy on multiple counts and a dossier has been passed to Holyrood authorities. Included are links to articles on the site which feature Constance in her role as Justice Secretary. Press releases which display the SNP 's logo are also part of the complaint. ‌ The complaint states: 'Angela Constance is using the publicly funded site to promote her work as a Scottish Government Minister, including updates and announcements clearly related to her ministerial responsibilities, rather than her role as a constituency MSP. 'The site includes party-political content and references that go beyond the factual, non-partisan remit expected of Parliament-funded communications. 'Angela Constance's website features SNP logos and party branding, which are clearly in breach of this rule. These visual elements are prominent and repeated, leaving no ambiguity as to their nature.' ‌ The complainant has called for a Holyrood probe into Constance's MSP website. The Justice Secretary was criticised last year after allowing her son to travel to an Old Firm match in her ministerial car. A Scottish Labour source said: "It's not enough that Angela Constance expects taxpayers to foot the bill for her chauffeur-driven trips to Old Firm matches, now she wants the public to pay for SNP propaganda online too. ‌ "This is part of a wider culture of entitlement we've seen time and again from senior SNP figures. Neil Gray also used taxpayer-funded chauffeurs to get to football games. Michael Matheson racked up thousands on his iPad roaming bill and tried to blame his kids before finally resigning. "The message is clear: the SNP think the rules don't apply to them and they treat taxpayers with complete contempt.' A spokesperson for the Scottish Parliament said: 'The Parliament's policies reflect that parliamentary resources cannot be used for party political purposes. As a matter of standard practice we won't comment on or confirm receipt of complaints.'
