BREAKING NEWS Trump does U-turn saying Zelensky should NOT bomb Moscow despite wanting Putin to 'feel the pain'
Trump pushed back on a report that he privately urged the Ukrainian president to increase strikes on Russian territory and asked Zelensky if he was able to hit Moscow and St. Petersburg.
'No, he shouldn't target Moscow,' Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday when asked about his conversation with Zelensky.
But, according to reports, Zelensky, in his July 4th call with Trump, suggested to the president that Ukraine needed long-range precision American weapons, leading Trump to inquire about the potential targets.
'Volodymyr, can you hit Moscow? … Can you hit St Petersburg too?' Trump asked, the Financial Times reported, citing multiple sources. The president said he wanted Putin to 'feel the pain.'
Zelensky replied: 'Absolutely. We can if you give us the weapons.'
Moscow is nearly 300 miles from the nearest Ukrainian-controlled territory and St. Petersburg is 530 miles away.
Trump signaled his support for the idea, describing the strategy as intended to 'make them [Russians] feel the pain' and force the Kremlin to the negotiating table, according to the two people briefed on the call.
But White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt argued Trump's words were taken out of context, saying the president 'was merely asking a question, not encouraging further killing.'
Ukraine has repeatedly targeted sites as far as 1,000 miles inside Russia - including in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Putin 's hometown - but the Kremlin says those missiles have been taken down by drone.
Trump has show increased impatience with Putin and wants the Russian leader to come to the negotiating table to end the war in Ukraine.
However, he clarified that despite agreeing to send American weapons to Kyiv, he's 'not looking' to give Ukraine long-range weapons - the kind that could do the most damage.
And, asked what side he's on in Russia-Ukraine war, the president said he's on 'humanity's side.'
'You know what the side I'm on - humanity's side. I want to stop the killing of thousands of people to go away. Stop the killing. I want the killing to stop,' he told reporters.
Trump, on Monday, threatened to slap 100 percent tariffs on Russia in 50 days if a deal to end the war isn't reached.
And he's doubled down on that threat.
'I don't think 50 days is very long, and it could be sooner than that,' he said on Tuesday. 'The tariffs are going to go on and other sanctions.'
He said he hasn't talked to Putin since that threat as he tries to use his economic might to bring Putin to heel.
The Russian president has ignored Trump's call for a ceasefire and ratcheted up his attacks on Ukraine, sending more than 500 drones and missiles almost daily.
Trump, in a meeting on Monday with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that he's sending American weapons to Ukraine and that the U.S. will not be paying for them.
He made a deal with NATO to send sophisticated weaponry, including Patriot missiles, to Ukraine.
But Trump insisted that the U.S. will not be footing the bill after being taken advantage of for so long.
'We've made a deal today where we are going to be sending [Ukraine] weapons and [Europe] is going to be paying for them,' he stated.
'We - the United States - will not be having any payment made. We're not buying it, but we will manufacture it, and they're going to be paying for it.'
Trump, for weeks, has been showing his frustration with the Russian leader's refusal to stand down and come to peace talks.
'We are very, very unhappy with [Russia], and we're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 percent,' he noted.

Zelenskiy says he wants half Ukraine's weapons to be produced domestically
July 16 (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Wednesday that he was counting on his new incoming government to take measures to boost the proportion of weapons made at home to 50% within six months. Zelenskiy has carried out a political reshuffle this week, nominating as his new prime minister Yulia Svyrydenko, the driving force behind a minerals deal with the United States. Outgoing prime minister Denys Shmyhal has been put forward as the new defence minister. The nominations, which require parliamentary approval, came as diplomatic efforts to end the war with Russia, now in its fourth year, have stalled and as Ukraine seeks to revive its cash-strapped economy and build up a domestic arms industry. Zelenskiy said he, Shmyhal and outgoing defence minister Rustem Umerov had decided at a meeting on Wednesday that the defence ministry would have "greater influence in the domain of arms production". "Ukrainian-made weapons now make up about 40% of those used at the front and in our operations," Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address. "This is already significantly more than at any time in our country's independence. The production volumes are truly large, but we need more. "Our goal is to reach 50% Ukrainian-made weaponry within the first six months of the new government, by expanding our domestic production. I am confident this is achievable, though not easy." Zelenskiy has long stressed the importance of boosting domestic production of weapons and developing joint production of weaponry with Ukraine's Western partners. It has focused on drone production and on providing air defences to withstand intensifying Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities. Zelenskiy has in recent weeks stressed the importance of developing drone interceptors as a rational way of tackling swarms of drones. Kyiv's military authorities last week announced the allocation of $6.2 million for a drone interceptor program to defend the capital's skies from Russian drones.

President Donald Trump signaled support for appointing a special prosecutor who could further investigate the bombshell case of financier and convicted pedophile Jeffery Epstein. Trump spoke about the case in an interview with John Solomon of and signaled his support for an independent investigator to look into the weaponization of DOJ against conservatives in the 2016 election. The president also volunteered that the special prosecutor could look into the Epstein files as well. 'I think they could look at all of it. It's all the same scam. They could look at this Jeffrey Epstein hoax also, because that's the same stuff that's all put out by Democrats,' Trump said when asked what he'd most like to see the FBI investigate. Trump expressed concerns that former intelligence and law enforcement officials could have tampered with evidence surrounding Epstein case. 'I can imagine what they put into files, just like they did with the others. I mean, the Steele dossier was a total fake, right? It took two years to figure that out,' he said, referring to former FBI directors James Comey and Christopher Wray. He described the case as a 'hoax' and lamented that Republicans were still hung up on the case despite an effort by the Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice to put the controversial case behind them. 'But they ought to look into the Jeffrey Epstein hoax too, because that's another hoax that's frankly, put out by the Democrats pushing, pushing the Republicans, and put out by the Democrats,' he added. The president and his administration has faced growing controversy after the Justice Department announced in a memo that there was no evidence to support the conspiracy theory that Epstein was murdered in prison and that he did not have a client 'list' that they could release. The news sparked outrage from the president's followers who anticipated the eventual release of the files after Trump promised during his presidential campaign to release them. Congressional Democrats jumped on the case, further exploiting the disappointment from Trump's base, even suggesting the president was tied up with the Epstein case and covering it up. Trump said Wednesday in the Oval Office he was discouraged by many of his supporters clinging to the case. 'I've lost a lot of faith in certain people, yeah, I've lost. Because they got duped by the Democrats,' he told reporters. On Wednesday, Trump also berated his followers on social media for their focus on the 'Epstein scam' he said was perpetrated by Democrats. 'Their new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this 'bullshit,' hook, line, and sinker. They haven't learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years,' he wrote. He criticized Republicans and his MAGA supporters for not focusing on his successes and distracting the public with the case. 'Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don't even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don't want their support anymore!' he added. On Tuesday, Trump tried to dismiss the case as 'boring' and said he did not understand why the case was so important to his supporters. 'He's dead for a long time,' Trump said of the disgraced financier. 'He was never a big factor in terms of life. I don't understand why the Jeffrey Epstein case would be of interest to anybody.' The president spoke about the issue that threatens to further plague his presidency after a trip to Pennsylvania on Air Force One. 'It's pretty boring stuff. It's sordid, but it's boring, and I don't understand why it keeps going,' he said to reporters on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews. Epstein's associate Ghislane Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in Florida after she was convicted in June 2022 for conspiring with her boss Epstein in the sexual exploitation of minors. The White House dismissed any notion of Trump pardoning Maxwell.
