Sir David Attenborough, 98, comments on ‘nearing the end of his life' in emotional admission

Yahoo30-04-2025
Sir David Attenborough has reflected on his life at the age of 98, making a heart-wrenching admission about his time on planet Earth.
In a new documentary about the state of the world's oceans, titled Ocean with David Attenborough, Sir David - who turns 99 next month - has spoken about the challenges that are facing our planet, and specifically how our oceans are being impacted.
The documentary is set to be released on 8 May, which is the same date as Attenborough's birthday.
Explaining how the ocean has changed during his almost 100 years on Earth, Sir David spoke about approaching the 'end of [his] life'.
"When I first saw the sea as a young boy, it was thought of as a vast wilderness to be tamed and mastered for the benefit of humanity," he said. "Now, as I approach the end of my life, we know the opposite is true.
"After living for nearly a hundred years on this planet, I now understand that the most important place on Earth is not on land, but at sea."
In the doc, Sir David speaks about how the ocean is 'our greatest asset against climate change' but added: "Today, it is in such poor health I would find it hard not to lose hope were it not for the most remarkable discovery of all.
"If we save the sea, we save our world. After a lifetime of filming our planet, I'm sure nothing is more important."
After so many decades on our screens - with Attenborough's first ever TV show airing in 1953 - we can all agree that Sir David is basically the definition of a 'national treasure'.
However, it turns out that Attenborough 'hates' the accolade, with a Planet Earth III executive producer explaining it's the one title you should never give him.
Speaking to the Metro at the Planet Earth III Live in Concert event, Mike Gunton revealed that the presenter 'hates' being referred to as a 'national treasure'.
"He hates it, by the way," Mike said.
The producer, who has been working with David since the late 1980s, continued: "I say hates it… If anybody says he's a national treasure, he sort of slightly raises his eyebrows and says, 'Really?' That's a generational thing."
Ocean with David Attenborough will be available in cinemas on 8 May and on National Geographic, Disney+, and Hulu later this year.

Why 'Wishbone' Was the 'Right Time' for Conan Gray to Depict a Queer Summer Romance in His Music Videos (Exclusive)

The pop star's fourth studio album 'Wishbone' released Friday, Aug. 15 NEED TO KNOW Conan Gray released his fourth studio album Wishbone on Aug. 15 The era also saw the pop star portray a queer love story over the course of three music videos with longtime friend and actor Corey Fogelmanis It's the first time the singer-songwriter has explicitly depicted queer themes in his visuals — and he tells PEOPLE why now felt like the "right time" If Conan Gray was going to fall in love on screen, he knew he had to be comfortable. It's why he enlisted the help of former Disney actor and decade-long friend Corey Fogelmanis to costar in a trilogy of music videos to accompany his fourth studio album Wishbone. 'I knew I couldn't do it with a stranger, and Corey was right there in my contacts list. I called him up, I said, 'Hey, Corey. Can we fall in love in a music video?' ' the 26-year-old pop star tells PEOPLE. 'I truly don't think I could have done it if it wasn't for [him].' Gravitating to what feels natural was Gray's mantra when crafting the world of Wishbone, a cathartic '90s-tinged record chronicling a devastating breakup. Released Friday, Aug. 15, the singer-songwriter's 12-track LP was a return to tradition: He penned most of the songs alone on a guitar, only listened to music he loved and collaborated with his first-ever producer and 'musical dad' Dan Nigro again. He even got back in touch with his Texan roots while creating the album, heading back to his hometown of Georgetown, Texas, to film the music videos for Wishbone's singles, 'This Song,' 'Vodka Cranberry' and 'Caramel.' 'In so many ways, this album is a confrontation and a reminder to myself of who I am and where I grew up and the dreams that I had when I was a kid,' he says. 'Just the person I've always been.' Still, Gray ventures into new territory in his latest era. For the trio of videos, Gray and Fogelmanis play Wilson and Brando, best friends who have a whirlwind summer romance full of emotional peaks and valleys — and a whole lot of kissing. He has never shied from queer themes in his songwriting. 'The Story' from his 2020 debut album Kid Krow references two boys who were best friends, 'but always wished they were more.' In 'Boys & Girls' from last year's Found Heaven, he writes about a love interest who's the object of both male and female attention. With Wilson and Brando, it's the first time Gray has explicitly depicted queer love in his visuals. 'It absolutely felt like the right thing,' says the 'Heather' singer of the choice to portray love between two boys. 'It's just an instinct that I had in me. I knew I wanted to tell a story of these two childhood friends falling in love. And, I don't know, it just felt like the right time.' He continued, 'It felt like a story that I wanted to see for myself. And so maybe it was a bit selfish, really. I just wanted to see a cute little summer romance.' In the wishbone superstition, two people make a wish while holding a bird's forked bone. When it breaks apart, the person who receives the larger half will have their desire granted, while the other walks away with nothing. Gray confesses that the last time he got the losing end of the metaphorical wishbone was when he began writing the album two years ago. Through making record and coming back to himself, his life and his perspective have transformed. 'I realized that somebody getting a short end of the stick is not entirely always true,' he explains. 'When you lose something, oftentimes it's actually just a reallocation or a little nudge into the right direction in life, but you don't even realize you were in the wrong direction.' He says, 'I felt like I'd lost something, but ultimately ended up finding something that was so much more me and so much more what I was supposed to have versus what I wanted.' Wishbone is out on all streaming platforms. Read the original article on People

Man's Dramatic Mexico Facelift Breaks The Internet

We recently covered 51-year-old Michelle Woods' incredible facelift transformation... Michelle got the work done in Guadalajara, Mexico, and was able to save herself tens of thousands of dollars. She has been documenting the journey on TikTok, where her story has become mega viral. So, it's no surprise that now a man who has also had a facelift with unbelievable results in Guadalajara is going viral. 56-year-old David Dickson got a facelift a little over a year ago, and this is what he looked like right before his surgery: And here he is after he healed: Again, here is David before: And here he is after: I think this goes without saying, but David's look stunned million of people. People were saying his results were so amazing, it reminded them of the '90s film Death Becomes Her, where the actors Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn drink a potion to regain their youth. On average, most people agreed that David looked about two decades younger. And some people thought he looked even younger! Either way, both his and Michelle's results have persuaded a lot of people to consider Mexico for plastic surgery. BuzzFeed spoke to David who said he had a lower facelift, a neck lift, upper blephroplasty, lower earlobe reduction, and a CO2 laser treatment. After his cousin had a successful stomach surgery in Mexico, David said was set on having his plastic surgery done there as well. "I had been searching for a surgeon in Mexico because I knew I couldn't afford one here in the States. I was familiar with the healthcare system in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara and knew it wasn't as scary or antiquated as many people make it out to be. After interviewing several surgeons, I had narrowed my choices down to two in Guadalajara. During this process, I met a friend online who was also planning to use the same surgeon I finally decided on. We kept in touch as our surgery dates approached. After her surgery, she was in the recovery house and recommended I look up Dr. Maribel Belmontes Castillo, saying her work was impeccable. I took her advice, and the rest is history. I am so grateful for her recommendation." Dr. Belmontes Castillo is also the exact same surgeon Michelle from our previous article used. In fact, she joined a Facebook group David started about his plastic surgery journey in Guadalajara prior to getting her surgery. "She has credited the page to helping her along the way," he said. David said that after surgery, he had to stay in Guadalajara for 10 days to recover. Here is where some of his stitches were: And here he is in the days following his surgery: "I believe that anyone contemplating plastic surgery should take the time to explore their options and discuss experiences with others. During my research, I joined several Facebook groups, but while some were helpful, they didn't quite meet my needs. That is why I created my own Facebook group dedicated to past, present, and prospective patients, aiming to assist others embarking on this journey. I shared my travel experiences, surgery details, and recovery process, wanting to give an honest portrayal of the entire experience." "I frequently receive feedback about how beneficial the group has been and how it has eased many worries. A common sentiment expressed is that the surgery itself wasn't as daunting as expected, a sentiment I share as well. I experienced minimal pain, just some discomfort for around three days," he added. David told BuzzFeed that all of his cosmetic work and a one-night stay in the hospital cost around $9,000, and that includes his round-trip airfare from Atlanta. His meds, 10 days in a Guadalajara Recovery House with 24/7 care, meals, and postcare therapy (hyperbaric chambers, radiofrequency treatment, etc.) ended up costing around $5,000. So, in total, he spent around $14,000 for everything. That being said, David said that Dr. Belmontes' prices have increased quite a bit since her work has gone so viral on TikTok. Since going viral, David has had a lot of comments about his age. "Personally, I believe I could easily pass for someone in their mid-40s," he shared. And before his surgery, David also lost a lot of weight. "After losing 100 pounds, my goal was to achieve a look that more closely resembled my actual age. The excess skin sagging on me made me appear older than I truly was. I felt like I looked in my 60s before getting the lift. Now, when I gaze in the mirror, I feel more authentically myself than I did before." "Men, as we age, are fortunately now more focused on self-care, incorporating healthy diets, exercise routines, and even delving into facial skincare. Society is beginning to acknowledge this as a usual practice, not only for women but also for us men. I believe we should take charge of every facet of our well-being, and if that entails considering plastic surgery, whether minor or major, it's worth exploring. Advances in technology have come a long way, making the results barely perceptible. The overly tight and pulled-back appearance of the past is no longer the norm," David said. David is proof that the advances in plastic surgery procedures have come a long way — and that you don't need to be a wealthy celebrity to have great results. "It is amazing how much your self-confidence can be improved by a procedure that can be performed in a few hours. I know that for me, the reflection in the mirror did not match how I felt on the inside, but now it does," David concluded. Lastly, David said he hopes that sharing his experience helps men who are interested in plastic surgery become more comfortable with it. You can follow David on TikTok and Facebook.

3 Lessons On Family ‘Freakier Friday' Gets Right, By A Psychologist

With Freakier Friday hitting theaters, we're all bound to be hit by a wave of nostalgia. Freaky Friday, the original body-swap comedy had us laughing, maybe even cringing and tearing up just a little in the midst of it all. Both movies remind us just how chaotic family life can be when different generations and personalities share the same space, and this is only amplified in blended families. The movie franchise brings to light that these messy and unpredictable moments can also teach us some powerful lessons about bridging differences and finding common ground. While Freaky Friday gave us the hilarious chaos of a mother and daughter body-swap between Tess, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, and Anna, played by Lindsay Lohan, in Freakier Friday we see the mayhem upped a notch with a four-way switch. This time, Anna, now a single mom, swaps bodies with her teenage daughter, while Tess finds herself in the shoes of Lily, Anna's soon-to-be stepdaughter. Four lives are thus turned upside down, with each person suddenly navigating the responsibilities, challenges and quirks of someone else in the family. Suddenly, the teen is in charge of making dinner for six. The step-parent is navigating high school social politics and the grandparent is figuring out TikTok. What emerges from all the drama is a deeper kind of respect that doesn't erase their differences but makes space for them. You realize in their journey that family isn't about perfectly fitting together but about learning to stand side by side, even when your perspectives clash. The chaos then starts to feel a little less like a battlefield and more like a shared adventure; one where everyone's quirks and flaws have a place. The movie leaves you with plenty of takeaways for real life. Here are three lessons Freakier Friday gets right to help you navigate family chaos. 1. Everyone's Perspective Matters In both movies, one of the central themes is perspective-taking. Once they literally walk in each other's shoes, they realize neither story is completely right nor completely wrong. In many families, especially blended ones, this perception gap is real. Teens often feel parents 'don't get it.' On the other hand, parents think they're being perfectly reasonable. Step-parents and step-kids may feel like they're living in different worlds entirely, and in all of this, somewhere the chance to understand and connect with each other gets lost. The body-swap does the work of helping them see life through each other's lens. Perspective-taking, even without a magical body-swap, can help bridge the gap between what you think someone means and what they're actually experiencing. This skill can dissolve resentment before it builds. Research published in The Japanese Journal of Experimental Social Psychology explores how much perspective-taking within families is shaped by individual traits versus the specific relationships between family members. Researchers conducted a triadic survey involving 380 undergraduates and their fathers and mothers. They focused on 166 families where all three members completed the questionnaire, which allowed them to analyze patterns at the family, individual and relationship levels. Researchers found that perspective-taking in families is influenced by multiple layers: the overall family environment, each person's empathy-related tendencies, the specific role of fathers as partners and the unique dynamics between each pair of family members. Importantly, the relative weight of individual versus relationship factors was different in parent–child relationships compared to marital relationships. These findings suggest that improving perspective-taking in families means working on both individual skills, like empathy training and relationship-specific changes, such as strengthening communication between a parent and child or between spouses. It highlights that understanding isn't just a personal trait but something shaped by the unique history and dynamics of each relationship. In Freaky Friday, the body swap makes perspective-taking unavoidable. However, in real life, it's a choice. This research finding highlights that truly understanding each other means building both the skill to empathize and creating a relational environment where empathy can flourish. Families that build both skills and relationships have a much better chance of bridging the perception gap and giving everyone a real chance to feel understood. 2. Flexibility Beats Control It's clear in the movie that much of the conflict comes from how tightly each character clings to their own way of doing things, whether it's a parent enforcing 'the right' rules or a teen refusing to budge on her plans. Once they're forced into each other's lives, they realize that moving through life together and truly understanding each other means loosening those rigid expectations. The same holds true in the reality of every family in real life. When members in blended or multi-generational households stay flexible about routines, roles and responsibilities, they create space for cooperation instead of conflict. A 2025 study examined factors and interventions that strengthen family cohesion across diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts. The researchers did a systematic review drawing on 41 peer-reviewed studies from 2015 to 2023. They analyzed how emotional bonding, adaptability, communication and support contribute to cohesive family functioning. They found that families that are adaptable experience less conflict, stronger trust and better overall well-being. Flexibility can help reduce tension and allow members to adapt to each other's needs. 3. Shared Challenges Create Stronger Bonds The body-swap mix-up in both movies can only be resolved and undone when the characters begin to work together. Each of their individual strengths and their willingness to adapt become quite essential in navigating the day. In real life, it's no different. Whether blended, multi-generational or traditional, families tend to grow stronger when they face challenges together. Even everyday obstacles, like coordinating schedules, managing household responsibilities or resolving conflicts can become opportunities to build trust and a sense of teamwork. Classic research published in Family Process explored the concept of 'family resilience,' referring to how families withstand and recover from crises and persistent stress, shifting focus from individual traits to the family as a dynamic system. The researchers examined interactional processes over time, considering how communication, shared beliefs and collaborative problem-solving contribute to collective coping and hardiness. They found that families who maintain flexible roles, support one another and cultivate shared narratives develop stronger competence, coherence and confidence in navigating challenges. These findings highlight that resilience isn't just an individual quality but a family-level process that helps enhance cooperation and teamwork. It also enables families to face adversity more effectively, creating a foundation for lasting trust and unity. Shared challenges, when tackled together, help families build stronger connections. It doesn't have to be a big crisis that brings you together; even small and everyday challenges tackled together as a family can prevent frustration from building up. So, when you're bothered by something, instead of bottling things up and ending up in unnecessary arguments, try sharing the load with someone in your family who you think might relate or understand your perspective. You might feel like no one will understand, but if you don't give them the chance, you'll never know. Finding Growth In Everyday Chaos Freakier Friday is a reminder that family life can be full of clashes. However, those same clashes can be transformed into deeper connections with a little effort and understanding. Remember that no family is perfect, but by learning to navigate your own dynamics in ways that work best for you, those same challenges can help build stronger bonds — bonds that may even become the very support system you rely on. Breaking routines together or trying new approaches can help deal with disagreements better and reveal hidden emotions and needs if approached constructively. Family life can feel messy, unpredictable and even frustrating. But, it's possible to learn from one another and grow alongside the people you love, no matter what generation you're from. Curious how well you really understand your family's perspective? Take the science-backed Cognitive Empathy Scale to see how empathetic you are.
