Rafizi vs Anwar: A brewing storm in PKR?
| By all appearances, the People's Justice Party (PKR) is united under the banner of reform, democratic governance, and social justice.
However, beneath the surface, a growing ideological and political divergence is threatening to fracture the party's top leadership.
At the heart of this rift is the quiet but intensifying cold war between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his one-time protégé and former PKR deputy president, Rafizi Ramli.
To many political observers, this cold war bears an uncanny resemblance to the historical fallout between Anwar and his former political mentor, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in 1998. Then, Anwar was the rising reformist star within Umno, riding high on a wave of public support and international admiration.
His bold, progressive ideas and calls for economic transparency clashed with Mahathir's entrenched autocratic style. The conflict culminated in Anwar's dramatic ouster, galvanising the Reformasi movement and...

People must benefit from good growth figures, says academician
KOTA KINABALU: The country's positive economic figures must be translated into tangible benefits for the people, said Sabah Universiti Teknologi Mara senior lecturer Dr Jain Yassin. "This growth for sure strengthens investor confidence, and is good news. "We also welcome the increase in jobs creation, but hope more opportunities will be allocated to Sabah, especially given its higher unemployment rate compared with the national average," said the adviser for the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia-SDG (Sabah Region). He was commenting on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's annoucement that Malaysia's gross domestic product grew by 4.4 per cent in the first quarter of this year. Anwar said that based on early projections, growth in the second quarter was expected to reach 4.5 per cent. He also said Malaysia recorded its highest-ever approved investments last year, amounting to RM384 billion, a 17 per cent increase from 2023. Anwar, who is also finance minister, said the labour market was improving, with the unemployment rate dropping from 3.9 per cent in 2022 to 3.0 per cent as of May 2025. Over 250,000 new jobs were created between 2023 and 2024. He also announced that the government will accelerate the hiring of over 4,352 healthcare staff, particularly contract doctors, across the country by the end of this year. Jais said the aid for padi and rubber farmers, along with improving access to education, was the right approach for Sabah. "These efforts directly benefit rural communities and are more impactful than financial assistance. "Overall, this reflects a grassroots economic strategy suited to Sabah. "While some initiatives remain macro and peninsula-centric, the focus is moving closer to the people. "We hope the 13th Malaysia Plan will emphasise sustainable strategies to ensure Sabah's long-term economic growth."

PMX's special announcement shows Malaysia's strong economic fundamentals - Hajiji
Chief Minister of Sabah Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor — Bernama photo KOTA KINABALU (July 23): The State Government views Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's special announcement to ease the people's cost of living as an indication of the nation's strong economic fundamentals under the Madani Government. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the State Government welcomed the people-centric initiatives as they were meant to lessen the burden of the rakyat. 'It shows that the Prime Minister has the people's interest at heart,' he said in a statement here on Wednesday. Hajiji said the RM100 one-off assistance for all Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above to purchase basic goods in 4,100 shopping outlets, coupled with the expansion of the Rahmah Madani sales to every state constituency, is a boon to the rakyat. He also noted that the lowering of the RON95 petrol price to RM1.99 per litre through the targeted subsidy initiative, which is expected to benefit more than 18 million Malaysians, fulfilled the aspirations of the people. 'The declaration of the eve of Malaysia Day (September 15) as a public holiday, is a Federal Government's recognition of the special day for the whole country,' he said.
