Two stone quarries in Tiruppur to be penalised for mining beyond limit
TIRUPPUR: The district collector has ordered the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) of Tiruppur to impose fines on two stone quarries in Kodangipalayam for mining beyond the permitted limits, thus violating norms.
A taluk-level task force inspection revealed that both quarries had mined minerals beyond the permitted limit. In particular, Power Readymix, one of the private quarries, has mined 2.81 lakh cubic metre of stone illegally.
Sources said District Collector T Christuraj received a complaint from farmers that minerals were being mined illegally by two private quarries, named Power Readymix and SA Ganesan, in Kodangipalayam village in the Palladam taluk of Tiruppur district, beyond the permitted limit. Based on the complaint, the collector ordered the taluk-level Task Force to inspect the said quarries and that was done at the end of March.
The inspection revealed that 2.81 lakh cubic metre of stones and 36,634 cubic metre of gravel had been mined in the Power Readymix quarry, more than the amount permitted by the government. Further, it was also revealed that 7,434 cubic metre of gravel had been mined in SA Ganesan quarry, exceeding the permitted limit.
After the Palladam tahsildar submitted a report to the District Collector, the latter ordered the RDO to impose appropriate fines against the two quarries.
T Christuraj, in his order, dated April 29, said, "Appropriate penalty action should be taken against the two quarry owners who mined minerals in excess of the permitted amount as per Rule 36-A of the Tamil Nadu Minor Minerals Concession Rules, 1959, and GO (Ms).No.170 Industries (MMC-2) Department dated: 05.08.2020. And a report regarding this should be sent."
The farmers postponed the protest they had already announced in view of the collector's order.
R Sathish Kumar, State Secretary of the Legal Awareness Wing of Tamil Nadu Farmers Protection Association, said, "The licence period for these quarries expired in 2016. But even after that they had been operating and mining minerals illegally. We had planned to protest in front of the RDO office on April 30, demanding action against both quarries. We have now postponed the protest due to the order served against the both quarries by the collector. On the order of the collector, a fine should be imposed on both quarries immediately. In addition, the government should take action against all quarries operating illegally."

An unauthorised canine shelter dogs Kunnathunadu panchayat
Efforts to take the number of stray dogs being sheltered at a rented house in Parakkode East ward of Kunnathunadu panchayat in Ernakulam district as part of the implementation of an order of the Revenue Divisional Officer failed after the woman who runs the shelter allegedly did not cooperate with officials. A team of officials from the Animal Husbandry department, the veterinary hospital, and the Kunnathunadu panchayat had gone to the house with the Kunnathunadu police on Wednesday. However, the woman allegedly locked them out. Eventually, an official had to scale the compound wall to get the number of the stray dogs. Tension has been prevailing in the area following the rift between the woman and residents, who have been complaining about the hygiene concerns and the threat posed by so many strays. The residents had staged a march led by P.V. Sreenijin, MLA, representing Kunnathunadu, to the house on March 6, demanding that the dogs be shifted to a safer place immediately. Mr. Sreenijin alleged that the dog shelter facility was functioning without the necessary licence issued by the panchayat as per the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act. The long-running feud further boiled over when several strays managed to emerge outside the gated house on Tuesday night. This led to intensified protests by the residents who alerted the police and the panchayat authorities. 'There was a commotion in the area, and when we rang her up, she said that she was out to buy dog feed and had locked the gate. She further alleged that someone opposed to her would have deliberately unlocked it to bring her bad name,' said Prasanna I.N., member of the Parakkode East ward. As the commotion continued, the power supply in the area was disrupted, and the woman alleged that she was assaulted in between, citing the bloody wound on her head. The Kunnathunadu police have registered an assault case. There was yet another flare-up on Wednesday night when the compound wall of the house was pulled down under the cover of darkness, amidst a disruption in the power supply. The police said that the RDO had ordered her to vacate the house by May 9 and that the dogs be either given away for adoption or moved to an Animal Birth Control Centre. 'The panchayat secretary has given her a stop memo while there are also reports against the unauthorised dog shelter by the health inspector and veterinary hospital as well,' said Jancy Davis, Kunnathunadu panchayat president. The woman had moved to the area some four months ago, and the agreement, she claimed, included a clause about the sheltering of dogs. She all along claimed that she had taken the necessary precautions to ensure that the presence of dogs did not create any problems for residents.

Man arrested for fraudulently grabbing land
ADILABAD: A man was arrested for fraudulently acquiring 25 acres by using fake dependent certificates. The case came to light after a complaint was filed with the district Superintendent of Police (SP). In 1954, the government allocated 25 acres in Kazjarl village to Ameenuddin Khan. Ameenuddin had only one daughter, and the land remained vacant for years. Former Talamadugu Sarpanch Karunakar Reddy allegedly conspired to forge a dependent certificate by falsely claiming Sheikh Latif as Ameenuddin's grandson. Using this fake certificate, the land was transferred to Sheikh Latif's name in 2005. Since the land was an assigned land, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) was obtained from the RDO in 2009. Within four days Karunakar Reddy registered the land in his own name. Sheikh Latif passed away in 2022, further complicating the case. The real heirs of Ameenuddin Khan approached the district SP, leading to an investigation. Adilabad Rural CI K Phanidhar confirmed that fake dependent certificates were used to illegally seize land. -District SP Akhil Mahajan took special initiative to curb land fraud. Authorities emphasised the need for thorough verification before issuing dependent certificates. -Karunakar Reddy was arrested and remanded. The real heirs currently reside in Subhash Nagar, Adilabad.

ACB nabs 2 RIs for demanding bribes
Hyderabad: The Anti-Corruption Bureau officials caught a revenue inspector, Bhoopala Mahesh, working at the office of the tahsildar, Musheerabad mandal red-handed for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a complainant to issue a family member's certificate, an essential document for various official and legal processes. According to ACB, Mahesh initially demanded Rs 1 lakh. Following the complaint, ACB officials laid a trap and apprehended the RI while accepting Rs 25,000, a part of the demanded bribe. Investigation is on. In another case, ACB nabbed an RI at the office of tahsildar at Ibrahimpatnam mandal, in Ranga Reddy district, G Krishna, for allegedly demanding Rs 12 lakh bribe from the complainant for processing adding of seven guntas in his father's pattadar passbook in survey number 355 at Adibatla village and to not only see that the file is processed at RDO office, but also influence higher up at MRO and RDO offices, said ACB officials.
