Bomb scare on Mumbai-bound IndiGo flight at Kolkata airport; 26-year-old passenger detained

Mint13-05-2025

An IndiGo flight bound for Mumbai was diverted to the isolation bay at Kolkata's Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport on Tuesday afternoon following a bomb scare involving a passenger, officials confirmed. The incident caused a delay in the flight's departure as security personnel conducted thorough checks to ensure passenger safety.
The scare unfolded when a passenger, travelling from Imphal to Mumbai with a stopover in Kolkata, uttered the word 'bomb' to an IndiGo security officer during a secondary-level security procedure known as the step ladder point check.
This check involves airline staff frisking passengers and inspecting hand luggage just before boarding. The passenger reportedly asked, 'Do I have a bomb?' prompting immediate concern among security forces.
'The passenger's claim was declared specific, security was beefed up, and standard operating procedure (SOP) implemented,' said the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the airport. The 26-year-old individual was promptly detained and handed over to the police for further investigation.
The passenger had arrived in Kolkata on an IndiGo flight from Imphal and was scheduled to board another IndiGo flight to Mumbai.
Out of the 186 passengers booked on the Kolkata to Mumbai leg, 179 had already boarded the IndiGo plane when the incident occurred.
The Mumbai-bound IndiGo flight, originally scheduled to depart at 1.30 pm, was delayed as the aircraft was vacated and moved to the isolation bay for comprehensive security checks.
IndiGo issued a statement confirming the bomb threat and the subsequent security measures: 'IndiGo flight 6E 5227 operating from Kolkata to Mumbai received a bomb threat prior to departure. In accordance with security protocols, the aircraft was moved to an isolation bay at Kolkata airport. All necessary checks were conducted, and the standard operating procedures were followed.'
Security has been strengthened at all airports in the country following the India-Pakistan military conflict.

Kolkata police tighten passport checks to crack down on illegal immigrants and ID fraud; address checks mandatory

Kolkata police tighten passport checks to crack down on illegal immigrants and ID fraud; address checks mandatory KOLKATA: Breaking the syndicates dealing with illegal immigration by identifying the gang heads and double-checking all received ID documents from the source to examine their authenticity were the two reasons behind the changes introduced in passport verification, said Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma on Thursday, stressing the aim was to ensure illegal immigrants could not stay on. "We have re-evaluated the passport verification system. Our primary target is to identify syndicate members and individuals involved in such illegal activities. Wherever documents are getting used, we are scrutinising and verifying them right back to their source," Verma. "The accused at times use different addresses for different cases. We are cross-checking Aadhaar addresses with other ID documents." Verma was speaking to reporters after planting saplings at the Alipore Bodyguard Lines on World Environment Day on Thursday. He urged citizens to plant at least 10 trees as a "contribution to society". Going back to passport verification, Verma pointed out that no new passport would be issued nor any old one renewed without an address visit. Even cops asking passport applicants to visit police stations would face action, Verma said. The SOP says all documents of a passport applicant will be uploaded on the portal to root out discrepancy. Applicants can monitor document verification status through a link provided by police. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !

Doctor's Handbag Robbed On Train, Husband Loses Arm Trying To Save Her

Mumbai: A 50-year-old Mumbai-based doctor lost a part of his arm after he and his wife fell on the railway tracks during a robbery on a moving train. Yogesh Deshmukh, 50, and his wife Deepali Deshmukh, 44, both doctors, were travelling with their nine-year-old daughter in the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Kurla)-Nanded Express on Wednesday. The robbery occurred between Kanjunmarg and Bhandup. Just 15 minutes after the train had left Kurla terminus, a robber tried to snatch Ms Deshmukh's handbag. She resisted. As she held on to her handbag, the robber dragged her along till the gate of the coach. Her husband, who was sleeping on the upper berth, rushed to her rescue. Trying to save her, both fell on the tracks. Ms Deshmukh suffered bruises while a part of her husband's arm was crushed under the train. By that time, the train had slowed, and the robber had jumped off with the handbag. No railway security personnel were present during the incident. Ms Deshmukh told the police that she and her husband tried to contact the police helpline but were not aware of their location. A tempo driver noticed them asking for help and took them to a private hospital. The couple's minor daughter was safely disembarked at Kalyan, and the authorities were informed about the incident. Railway Police have registered a case against unidentified robbers and are going through CCTV footage to identify the suspect.

'Train-murder case': ‘Killer' set free from jail as victim returns home in UP

BAREILLY: Undertrial Narendra Kumar Dubey, 43, lodged in prison for two-and-a-half years for allegedly 'killing another man by throwing him from a running train' was released by a court here Wednesday, as the 'victim' was found alive in Gujarat, reports Kanwardeep Singh . Additional district and sessions judge Pankaj Kumar Srivastava said in the order that the person thrown off the train by Dubey was someone else. If the family of that person comes forward and wishes to file a case against Dubey, the case proceedings will go on. In Dec 2022, passengers on Delhi-bound 14205Ayodhya Cantt-Old Delhi Express threw one Mohd Ahtab, 26, off the train after suspecting him to be a mobile phone thief on a stretch between Shahjahanpur and Bareilly stations. When the train stopped in Bareilly, Dubey, from Ayodhya, was arrested by GRP and sent to jail under IPC section 302 (murder), based on videos and testimonies by passengers. Later, a body was found in Shahjahanpur, and through social media, a man from Bihar's Muzaffarpur, Mohammad Yaqub, identified it as that of his son Ahtab. The family then conducted the last rites in Shahjahanpur. A year after the incident, Ahtab returned home from Gujarat but didn't inform Shahjahanpur police. Villagers in Muzaffarpur made videos of Ahtab and sent them to police and he was brought to UP. He stated in court that he was not on the train that day as he was working in Gujarat in the tailoring and embroidery industry. The court then ordered the release of Dubey, declaring him innocent. Ahtab's father Mohammad Yaqub told the court the body shown to him looked like that of his son, and other members of the family also felt the same way. The brutal murder of the incident was posted on social media and shared widely online. In a 66-second video — purportedly shot by a passenger — several people could be seen laughing and assaulting the man. One of the passengers, identified as Narendra Kumar Dubey, could be seen abusing and pushing him out of the general compartment even as the man was begging for his life.
