Katie Taylor takes aim at ‘whining' Amanda Serrano ahead of third meeting

Independent5 days ago
Katie Taylor says she has had enough of the 'whining and complaining' from Amanda Serrano following their two tight showdowns.
The rivals came face to face at a press conference in New York on Wednesday ahead of their highly anticipated third bout on Friday.
Taylor said: 'The fact is, I am 2-0 against her. Opinions are opinions, but facts are facts.
'I'm just sick of the complaining and whining from your team.'
Taylor last defeated Serrano via unanimous decision in Texas in November, all three judges scoring the fight 95-94 in the Irish fighter's favour.
But controversy erupted post-fight when the Puerto Rican star used her interview on Netflix to accuse Taylor of intentional headbutting.
'The only thing that matters is that I'm 2-0 against her,' Taylor told the press conference.
'I plan on staying unbeaten against her.'
Serrano and Taylor will meet for a third time at Madison Square Garden.
When asked what she planned on improving in the latest rematch, Seranno said: 'I'm gonna use my head, but not the way it was used on me.
'We're going to be smarter, work smarter.'
During their last fight, Serrano received a bad cut above her eye in the fourth round, which was attributed to an accidental headbutt.
Taylor was deducted a point in the eighth round after repeatedly being warned against leading with the head.
Serrano herself asked Taylor why she would opt to take a third fight and disrupt her winning streak.
'I'm taking the fight again because I love the challenge of this,' Taylor said.
'I don't think it really matters that I'm 2-0, I just want to take the biggest challenges, the biggest fights.'
The pair's November encounter was a brutal back-and-forth affair through 10 rounds, which mirrored their classic initial meeting at Madison Square Garden in 2022.
Taylor and Serrano embraced each other after the bell, but the heavily pro-Serrano crowd voiced their displeasure as the result was announced.

Son of British boxing legend RETIRES at just 24-years-old following back-to-back defeats despite starting his career 14-0

The son of a British boxing legend has retired from the sport at the age of 24. After suffering successive defeats to the same opponent last year he has decided to hang up his gloves. The decision was also impacted by the death of one of his close friends. He previously fought on the undercard of the Anthony Joshua vs. Oleksandr Usyk fight in 2021. Prior to those two aforementioned defeats he had won his previous 14 professional fights. However, he now won't be entering the ring again. Ricky Hatton confirmed that his son Campbell has retired from boxing. Speaking to Boxing Now, he said: 'No, Campbell won't fight again. 'As you know, he didn't have much amateur experience. He gave it a go in the amateurs, and then he went pro and gave it a go. 'He fought for the Area title and got beaten. I thought he lost it to be fair. But then he fought the same lad straight away after. 'I thought he won the second one; they were both very close fights. But he lost a little bit of his mojo, and then a few things went wrong.' Campbell Hatton lost to James Flint in Sheffield in March 2024 before being defeated by him again in Manchester seven months later. Ricky Hatton continued: 'They were both very close fights, he lost a little bit of his mojo and a few things went wrong [outside the ring], sadly lost one of his best friends in Justin who passed away at 27, went through a bit of a [tough] time, his heart wasn't in it. 'I said, 'Listen son, you should be very proud of yourself, you have given it a go, but if you have lost your mojo, you need to get out'. You can't play boxing, you can play any other sport. So I advised him, and now he is doing solar panels.' Ricky Hatton, whose last professional fight was in 2012, recently announced that he will be returning to the ring aged 46. He will face will face fellow veteran Eisa Al Dah, who is also 46, in a middleweight contest on December 2 in Dubai. He previously held multiple championships in the light-welterweight division and one at welterweight.

Former NFL QB Bridgewater suspended from high school coaching job

Former NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has been suspended from his position as a high school football coach in Miami while under investigation for allegedly providing impermissible benefits. Bridgewater, 32, confirmed his suspension by Miami Northwestern in a Facebook post on Sunday but said he remains committed to his alma mater. 'The suspension came from MNW and it's impossible to suspend someone who doesn't work for you. So if im suspended from MNW im free to go to another school of my choice but IM NOT GOING ANYWHERE. 'And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.' Bridgewater led Miami Northwestern to a Class 3A state championship in his first season as the coach in 2024. He returned to the NFL in December to serve as Jared Goff's backup with the Detroit Lions but did not appear in a regular season game. In the playoffs, he completed his only pass attempt for 3 yards in a 45-31 loss against the Washington Commanders in the divisional round. According to multiple reports, Bridgewater posted earlier this month on Facebook that he paid for Uber rides, meals and recovery services for his players last season. He asked fans to donate to help cover such expenses this year. The Florida High School Athletic Association confirmed to Rivals on Monday that it is gathering more information. Bridgewater played for six NFL teams from 2014-24, compiling a 33-32 record with 15,120 passing yards and 75 touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl after an 11-5 season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2015.

Inside Daniel Dubois' camp for Oleksandr Usyk undisputed showdown fuelled by Ascot wins, Porsches and ancient Greece

DANIEL DUBOIS' dream of Oleksandr Usyk revenge and undisputed heavyweight glory is being fuelled by Ascot wins, Porsche speed and ancient Greek athletics. The 27-year-old IBF heavyweight champion of the world is a different beast to the boy who clammed up and was defeated by Oleksandr Usyk in Poland in 2023. 7 7 7 And he invited SunSport down to his gym to understand what makes Dubois Mk2 tick ahead of the Saturday Wembley rematch. Phenomenal wins over drug cheat Jarrell Miller, dangerous Filip Hrgovic and the iconic September knockout of Anthony Joshua have helped the home-schooled introvert morph into a confident playboy. The new wheels and last month's VIP trip to the races have given Dynamite Dan a new layer of confidence and belief and a licence to thrill. Ahead of the rerun - against Ukraine's WBA, WBC and WBO boss Usyk for the undisputed glory - DDD told SunSport how the top hat and tails and soft top 911 super motor have helmed make him a man of the people. 'It was good,' he grinned at a question not about boxing. 'It was the first time I had ever been out to the races, so it was good, it was a good experience. 'I didn't have any winners but one of the people that we went with had a big winner, so that's good luck. 'It was great to see the wider public and a wider audience know me - and what I have achieved - and what my next fight is. 'Maybe one day I will settle down on my own little farm and get a couple of horses of my own.' The farm Dubois refers to is the lush Borehamwood grounds his trainer Don Charles' Pug Gym is based on. 'Boxing ain't broke here' Frank Warren on the Dubois v Usyk, Tyson Fury and IF he will ever retire | No Glove Lost 7 7 Woodcock Hill is a working farm with tractors and stables and two beautiful horses housed right next to the high-roofed sweatbox where Dubois thrashes it out with sparring partners. But - most importantly - the hill-top car park is just eight miles from Wembley, where Dubois dethroned AJ as the king of British boxing and he aims to topple Usyk from the global throne next. And every morning when the 6ft 5in, 17st powerhouse unfolds out of his two-seater convertible he cannot miss the 440ft arch, just eight miles down the road, that stares back. He explained: 'When you are in that ring, you are totally alone, so this sort of isolation is good. 'Arriving at work every morning and seeing that Wembley arch from the car park feels fantastic. 'But it just serves as a reminder that I need to produce a repeat performance. 7 'I try to soak everything up but we are in fight week now, I have tunnel vision. 'Once the fight is done, then I will enjoy it all properly.' Assistant trainer Kieran Farrell confirmed the whole team starts the day with a quick game of eye spy. 'When we arrive at training every morning, we always look over at the Wembley arch and use it as inspiration,' he said. 'And I have caught Daniel doing it a few times as well, when we have been three and then two weeks out. It inspires us all.' Dubois was a mercurial talent even as a middleweight boy. And with dad Stan desperate to maximise his potential and earning power, he moved around all of London's best amateur gyms. It's been similar in the paid ranks too, with Dubois impressing at the Peacock and Shane McGuigan gyms, before ditching them both. Lightweight world champion Caroline Dubois even split up the giant family when she decided her dad was too controlling. And hardcore boxing fans have always been concerned that an overbearing parent - who home schooled six of his most recent children - is the reason Dubois didn't have the mental strength to cope with Joe Joyce and Usyk challenges. But Don Charles, the latest coach who has definitely got sensational results in the latest run, explained: 'Dan's dad is a very strict father, just like my father was. 'Whether you are from the Caribbean or Africa, one thing we have in common is that black parents are very strict and we have a very strict upbringing. 'Daniel has a disciplined background, from his father and he has used boxing to occupy them. 'He can't be doing bad because he has a world champion son and daughter.' 7 When SunSport first covered Dubois around a decade ago, we were stunned to hear the callouses and scars on his hands. It was explained that his dad would order him to start doing press ups on his knuckles and - instead of counting his progress in reps - he would pop down the shop and score his gruelling dips by the HOUR. Calisthenics and mobility mastermind Cuong Hua, who has been in Dubois' corner for seven years, explained that Dan has a freakish commitment to training, matched by only 0.1 per cent of the country and America's most extreme soldiers. He told us: 'Dan is old school so sometimes he feels, unless he is exhausted and broken down, then he hasn't worked hard enough. 'We have explained to him over the years that he doesn't have to destroy himself to have worked hard. 'Even when Dan first started on the pull-up bar, he could do 20 strict-form pull-ups. 'I don't think people know how difficult that is, that's something the Navy Seals aim for, it's better than 99.9 per cent of the planet can dream of. 'Dan is the most flexible big man I have ever seen, he can almost do the splits. 'For a 6ft 5in, 110kgs man, that is tremendous and almost mad.'
