British Steel reaches 5-year $677M deal with Network Rail
June 17 (UPI) -- British Steel announced Tuesday that it has landed a new contract with the Network Rail railway company worth more than a half-billion dollars.
In a press release, British Steel's Commercial Director for Rail Craig Harvey said, "The contract is a ringing endorsement of UK workers and British industry, underpinning the vital role we play in ensuring millions of passengers and freight operators enjoy safe, enjoyable, and timely journeys on Britain's railways."
The deal made between the two companies is a five-year arrangement valued at approximately $677 million that will have the steel company create about 7.7 to 8.8 tons of rail every year. Additionally, the contact can be extended for another three years.
British Steel is the only manufacturer of rail in the United Kingdom.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander posted to X Tuesday that she had met with representatives of British Steel to finalize the contract, and that "this deal truly transforms the outlook for British Steel and its dedicated workforce in Scunthorpe."
The English town of Scunthorpe is a British Steel site that has reportedly supplied Network Rail with track for more than 20 years, and in the last decade alone they have manufactured over 1.1 million tons of rail for Network Rail.
The factory there had been scheduled to close its blast furnaces earlier this year but was saved when the government used emergency powers to keep it open for now.
"After taking urgent action to step in and save these historic blast furnaces from closure, we've now helped secure their long-term future by backing British Steel with meaningful government contracts, protecting thousands of skilled manufacturing jobs in the process," said Alexander.
U.K. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said Tuesday in the release that "This is great news for British Steel and a vote of confidence in the U.K.'s expertise in steelmaking, which will support thousands of skilled jobs for years to come."

Franklin's Wyelea community on the Harpeth River completes phase 1 of construction
Wyelea a 600-acre, multimillion-dollar community in Franklin, has officially entered Phase 2 of the project. The residential community and private members club was originally unveiled in 2023. The land that the 68 lots reside on was first purchased from the Ingram family for $28.1 million. 'It's such a beautiful piece of land, and it needs to be treated thoughtfully,' said Trevor Cross, the project's principal developer. The scenery around the planned community helped give birth to its name, a combination of the words wye and lea. Wye is "an old English word for a place where two rivers come together,' Cross said, "and this project, or this property, rather, has two miles of river frontage on the West Harpeth River. The second part translates to a high meadow.' Phase 1, which consisted of construction of roads and utilities, has been completed. Additionally, the first homesite closings have begun, with over 40% under contract. "This is an exciting moment for Wyelea,' Cross said. 'It's not just progress on paper. You can see the roads, walk the lake's edge, and feel the rhythm of the site coming to life. We're proud of how far we've come and are equally committed to doing it with care. This place is unlike anything else, not only in Middle Tennessee, but across the country, and that is resonating with our future residents and members.' Phase 2 includes additional roads and infrastructure under construction in preparation for The Commons, Wyelea's central amenity village. Construction of Wyelea's club amenities is set to begin this fall. This area is designed to be the heart of the community, with spaces that balance wellness, gathering, dining and recreation. The amenity village will also be home to Hale House, where residents can expect to indulge in a state-of-the-art fitness center designed in partnership with Technogym, a thermal spa with hot pools and cold plunge, infrared sauna, steam room, red-light therapy, and numerous treatment rooms. 'Designing for Wyelea begins with listening to the land,' said Scott Torode, lead architect and principal at Pfeffer Torode. 'At The Commons, that meant creating buildings that felt quiet and natural, with a rhythm that responds to how people actually want to live — spaces for wellness and gathering that feel warm, not overly programmed.' Homes are now in design review, with the first permit submissions projected for late summer. A Russian oligarch's superyacht is finally on the move
You wouldn't need to squint too hard at the Aegean Sea to spot The Eclipse, a Russian oligarch's controversial superyacht that recently started sailing again. Roman Abramovich's boat is on the move, according to Vessel Finder, and is scheduled to reach a port near Istanbul on Thursday, August 21. It's a long time coming for the $700 million boat, which has been docked in the Marmaris, Turkey, district for almost two and a half years, according to local news outlet Turkiye Today. At 533 feet long, The Eclipse was once the biggest yacht in the world, but it's notable for more than its impressive size. In March of 2023 and shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, the UK government sanctioned Abramovich for his alleged ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Many of the billionaire's assets were sold or frozen, according to Bloomberg, but he quickly moved his yachts to friendlier waters. The Eclipse arrived in Marmaris shortly after Abramovich was sanctioned, along with another one of his million-dollar vessels. According to Turkiye Today, the superyacht is headed to Istanbul for likely pricey repairs. Superyachts are wildly expensive to maintain, and experts previously told Business Insider that owners should expect to shell out about 10% of a yacht's new-build price every year. Business Insider snapped some pictures of The Eclipse in 2013 when it was docked at Manhattan's Pier 90. Take a look inside the controversial vessel. The yacht is 533 feet long and styled after military vessels. The superyacht was designed by British designer Terence Disdale, and it took four and a half years to build. Disdale previously spoke to the charter company ADA Yacht 10 years after it was delivered about his work on the vessel. "For me, it's more of a clean piece of architecture than a piece of style," he told ADA Yacht. It was the world's largest yacht when it was built in 2010. "While the yacht was still on the drawing board, there was a rumor that someone was building a larger boat, and the owner was asked if he knew about it. He said he didn't, and he didn't care. Breaking the record was the furthest thing on his mind," Disdale said. The Eclipse has two helipads. It was designed with its helipads in mind. "Having a helipad at the front brings the superstructure to spring size. If it wasn't there, you wouldn't have this length," Disdale said. It has 17 VIP cabins. With 24 guest cabins on board, visitors have access to a gym, a spa with a sauna, and a massage room. The boat can accommodate 70 crew members. There's a 15-foot pool on the main deck. Other amenities include a second pool, several jacuzzis, and a disco lounge. There's also a beauty salon on board. The Eclipse has three launch boats. They looked to be stocked with medical supplies and a variety of handheld radios. There's also a mini-submarine that can dive to 50 meters. A large yacht like the Eclipse can hold over 100,000 gallons of fuel.
