The PURE Growth Fund Opens Call for Proposals for Clean Energy and Agribusinesses in Tanzania
DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 2025--
The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) ( www.REEEP.org ) is pleased to announce that the first Call for Proposals of the PURE Growth Fund is now open. The Pure Growth Fund is a transformative initiative to accelerate the Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) within Tanzania's agri-food systems and unlock low-emission development pathways for the country.
In line with Tanzania's priorities to strengthen and promote competitive value chain development in the agriculture sector, expand access to modern energy services in rural areas and increase the share of renewable energy in the generation mix to 75% by 2030, the PURE Growth Fund targets the intersection of agriculture and energy—two sectors that, according to the FAO, employ over 70% of the labor force in sub-Saharan Africa and account for nearly 20–30% of the continent's GDP. In Tanzania, agriculture already contributes 24.3% of GDP and accounts for 55% of total employment.
PURE Growth One Funding Window
The first funding window under the PURE Growth Fund will provide EUR 2.5 million of incentive capital with ticket sizes of EUR 250,000 – 1,000,000 per company, technical assistance and policy engagement to support the sustainable growth of clean energy SMEs and agribusinesses, enabling them to expand operations, enhance profitability and build strong customer bases. The funding window will be open until 1 August 2025, with the implementation phase expected to begin in January 2026. It is funded by a generous donation from the Government of Austria and developed by REEEP.
'Austria is proud to be the inaugural donor of the PURE Growth Fund, a transformative programme that exemplifies our commitment to accelerating the just energy transition in sub-Saharan Africa, says Elfriede Anna More, Deputy Director General, Head of International Climate and Environmental Affairs, Federal Republic of Austria.
'The programme will de-risk the private sector and move beyond technology deployment toward holistic ecosystem integration, leading to a stronger market and accessibility of PURE technologies and services as well as more sustainable value chains,'' says Merja Laakso, Director of Programmes, REEEP.
By integrating PURE technologies across the agri-food value chain—from irrigation and harvesting to processing, storage and transport—the PURE Growth Fund will increase the share of domestically produced food, reduce food waste and strengthen resilience to climate and financial shocks. It will further break the silos between agriculture and renewable energy by incentivising those services that maximise the impact of PURE technology on agri-food value chains.
'The launch of the PURE Growth Fund marks a significant step forward in our mission to empower local communities by integrating renewable energy solutions into agriculture, thereby increasing incomes and improving livelihoods across Tanzania,' says Honorable Mohamed Omary Mchengerwa, Minister of Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI), Government of the United Republic of Tanzania.
We are thrilled to launch the PURE Growth Fund in Tanzania as the first step in a multi-country programme,'' says Eva Kelly, CEO, REEEP. ''There is extraordinary potential for renewable energy to transform agri-food value chains across the Global South.''
Eligible clean energy SMEs and agribusinesses operating in Tanzania are invited to apply for funding and support under the PURE Growth Fund. The application guidelines, including eligibility criteria, funding priorities and submission instructions, are available for download on REEEP's website at www.REEEP.org.

Pepto Bismol didn't prevent travelers' diarrhea compared to placebo, small CDC study found
How gut health can impact more than just the stomach Bismuth subsalicylate, the active ingredient in Pepto Bismol, is often used to treat and prevent diarrhea while traveling — but a new study found it may not help with prevention. In the study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "no significant difference" was found for symptoms of loose stool or diarrhea between groups who took the medication for prevention and those who took a placebo. Since 1939, bismuth subsalicylate has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of diarrhea, heartburn, indigestion, nausea and upset stomach. But, as the authors note, it's also used off-label for the prevention of diarrhea, especially among international travelers. The study issued questionnaires before, during and after travel to the 270 participants, who had a median age of 32 and planned to travel to Southeast Asia, south central Asia, North Africa or sub-Saharan Africa for 7 to 21 days. Participants were recruited from clinical sites in New York in Massachusetts. The group given the medication took 4 tablets twice daily during their trip. The study did have limitations, including not reaching the target sample size. But it did provide the first new data since the 1980s on the potential use of bismuth subsalicylate in diarrhea prevention, according to the study's authors. "Despite this study not reaching the targeted sample size, there are nonetheless important considerations for healthcare providers conducting pretravel consultations for international travelers," the authors wrote. The authors also noted further studies are needed to determine if there is a benefit in certain traveler groups or under certain circumstances. "A larger study might show benefit, although the benefit may be small given the results of this study," they wrote. Procter & Gamble, the parent company of Pepto Bismol, provided the medication for the study but did not participate in any procedures, the authors noted.

Erthos Secures 92 MW Project
Chandler, AZ, USA, June 03, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Erthos, a leading provider of large-scale renewable energy technology and inventor of Earth Mount Solar™, has secured the largest deployment of its technology to date: a 92 MW solar installation serving a major industrial manufacturing facility in Texas. Developed by Industrial Sun, a leading Texas-based developer, the project is slated for full interconnection to the ERCOT grid in the first half of 2026. According to Wade Gungoll, CEO of Industrial Sun, 'Erthos and its Earth Mount Solar technology offer a timely solution to many of the constraints utility-scale developers face today. The market has long needed this kind of innovation, and we look forward to seeing it deployed in Texas.' Facing an aggressive commercial operation date, the project required rapid deployment. Erthos' groundbreaking speed of installation provided the most reliable path to meet that deadline. Located in Matagorda County, near the southern edge of the U.S. hail-prone and hurricane-affected region, the site demanded a system capable of withstanding extreme conditions. Erthos technology has been validated to meet these challenges with: 'More than just a validation of scale, this project proves bankability,' says Jim Tyler, CEO of Erthos. 'And, even in the face of today's uncertainties, this project shows that our low-price offering remains resilient in the face of tariffs, AD/CVD measures, prevailing wage rules, and U.S. content requirements.' This installation leverages over 3.5 years of operational data across more than 15 sites nationwide, reinforcing the scalability, reliability, and bankability of Earth Mount Solar™ technology for utility-scale applications. The project will participate in the ERCOT market—one of the most dynamic and operationally demanding power markets in the world. While commercial terms remain confidential, this project establishes a new benchmark for cost-competitive solar in Texas. About Erthos Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Chandler, Arizona, Erthos provides a complete suite of products and services designed to help solar developers significantly reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for utility-scale solar projects. The company's leadership team brings experience from Tesla, General Electric, First Solar, EnerVenue, Depcom Power, Sterling & Wilson, SMA, Solar Frontier, and Plug Power, with a global track record spanning the U.S., Latin America, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, and the Asia-Pacific region.
