India's top e-commerce stocks have outpaced local indexes and regional peers over the past month, as a rapid rebound fuels bets on their ability to edge out rivals and boost profitability.Shares of Swiggy Ltd. climbed 20% last month, topping the NSE Nifty 100 Index, while Eternal Ltd. advanced 11%. The rally in India's fast-growing quick-commerce sector — which delivers daily essentials in just minutes — contrasts sharply with losses for counterparts in China, where a fierce price war has battered food-delivery firms.Even with new entrants including Amazon.com Inc. and Walmart Inc.'s Flipkart India Pvt., analysts say incumbents Swiggy, Eternal, and unlisted Zepto are likely to retain market share, thanks to their entrenched supplier networks and first-mover advantage.'Established players have shown they can manage delivery costs effectively, especially in paying and utilizing riders efficiently,' said Nirav Karkera, a fund manager and head of research at Fisdom. 'New entrants, however, will still need to prove they can do this in a sustainable way,' he added.Quick commerce is reshaping India's online retail landscape, with companies racing to tap into a market that Bloomberg Intelligence estimates could reach $100 billion by 2030. The segment promises delivery of essentials like groceries of personal care items in as little as 10 minutes. For now, Eternal's Blinkit, Swiggy's Instamart and Zepto collectively control around 88% of the quick-commerce market share in India, according to data compiled by JM Financial Ltd. Blinkit has led the segment since its 2022 acquisition by Eternal, which also owns food-delivery platform Zomato These established businesses have invested heavily in expanding their warehouse and 'dark store' fulfillment-center networks to more and more cities. That's put pressure on profit margins along with price cuts intended to lure customers.Such costly expansion is expected to ease for the early movers this year, however, allowing them to focus on profitability while newer entrants still need to invest in order to gain share. Major players are also moving toward better monetization by incentivizing high-value purchases and charging fees for new related services.E-commerce platforms are raising average order sizes, applying more discipline to their discounts and increasingly focusing on improving their economics, JM Financial analysts including Swapnil Potdukhe wrote in a June 26 note. 'Losses may have already peaked' for both Blinkit and Instamart, they added. In China meanwhile, the e-commerce delivery sector continues to struggle with hostile competition. The leaders Meituan and JD.com Inc. have shed more than $70 billion in combined market value since March peaks.Challenges also remain in India. Inroads by Zepto have taken the most market share from Instamart, according to JM Financial's data. And Swiggy is still unprofitable, though analyst sentiment has been improving, with its ratio of analyst buy recommendations climbing to the highest since its late 2024 listing.Plans for an eventual stock market listing by Zepto may draw some investment allocations away from Eternal and Swiggy, according to Fisdom's Karkera. Nevertheless, they're all seen benefiting from expansion of a market that is still growing.'The incumbents continue to stretch their lead in users as well as in store networks, despite lowering discounts and levying delivery and handling fees,' said Aditya Soman, an analyst at CLSA Ltd. 'We remain positive on the quick-commerce opportunity. We believe there is enough room for the incumbents and a couple of new entrants.'

Cakes, chaats and Kaju barfi top Rakhi food orders

This Raksha Bandhan, Swiggy recorded a strong rise in food orders, with both metros and non-metros contributing to the growth. Overall orders increased by 32.4 percent compared to last year, led by Bengaluru and Mumbai. Non-metros showed an even sharper rise of 38.1 percent, with cities such as Surat, Thiruvananthapuram, Patna, Vadodara and Ludhiana at the forefront. Dinner time saw the highest activity, as the platform handled over 4,650 orders per minute between 8 and 9 pm. The peak was 5,500 orders per minute, a 28 percent increase from Rakhi last year. Swiggy also reported a 20 percent rise in first-time users, showing that festivals are becoming occasions when more people adopt food delivery to save time and share meals with family. The single highest bill placed this year was Rs 15,740 from a non-metro city and Rs 26,434 from a metro. Sweets were a key highlight of the festival. Dessert orders grew by 36.7 percent, with Kaju Barfi emerging as the top choice. Bengaluru led the demand for Kaju Barfi nationwide, while cakes in multiple flavours — milk, white and dark chocolate — also saw strong orders. The data reflects how Indian families are blending tradition with modern convenience. By using Swiggy to order festive meals and sweets, they are able to uphold customs while making the most of technology to bring people together more easily.

Why corporate meets are like Durga Pujo

Oh, there are few things that can top the buzz of top-notch mindfests, whether it's ET's WLF in Delhi, or WEF's powwow in Davos. But have you noticed the similarities they have with fests like Durga Pujo? Think about it - attending panels and sessions at these events is really the corporate cousin of pandal-hopping. You start with grand intentions: 'I'll attend the AI ethics panel, the tough tariffs talk, and maybe squeeze in the one on quantum tofu.' But 30 mins in, you're swinging your lanyard - the strap or cord around the neck that acts as your attendance/entry pass - and chewing the cud with someone who calls himself 'Dr Rakesh' and insists he's a thought leader in 'synergistic disruption'.Much like pujo pandals, summit panels are judged by spectacle and buzz. One has LED-lit idols, the other has videos accompanied by soft music. Both involve queues, elbowing strangers, and looking at other people looking at you being suitably moved. The moderator is the pundit doubling as pandit, chanting near-Sanskrit buzzwords like 'scalability' and 'intersectionality', with the fervour of aarti. The panelists, like deities, sit elevated, bathed in spotlight, answering questions no one asked before, with answers that leave you delightfully hungry. And the audience? A mix of devotees, sceptics, and those just here for the excellent, free coffee. Elevate your knowledge and leadership skills at a cost cheaper than your daily tea. Margin recovery crucial for Swiggy re-rating despite strong Q1 growth

Swiggy delivered revenue of Rs 4,961 crore in the April–June quarter (Q1) of FY26, up 12.5 per cent quarter-on-quarter (Q-o-Q) and 54 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y). The food delivery business's gross order value (GOV) grew 18.7 per cent Y-o-Y to Rs 8,090 crore, while contribution margin (CM) contracted 50 basis points (bp) Q-o-Q to 7.3 per cent. Adjusted EBITDA of the food delivery segment as a per cent of GOV dipped 50 bp Q-o-Q to 2.4 per cent. Monthly transacting users (MTUs) grew 16 per cent Y-o-Y. Instamart's GOV was Rs 5,660 crore, up 107 per cent Y-o-Y. Its CM expanded 100 bp Q-o-Q to minus 4.6 per cent. Dark-store additions included 41 new active stores in Q1 compared with 300 in Q4. Adjusted EBITDA as a per cent of GOV was minus 15.8 per cent (versus minus 18 per cent in both Q4 and Q1 FY25). Instamart's CM improved to minus 4.6 per cent from minus 5.6 per cent in Q1 FY25. Overall, Swiggy posted a net loss of Rs 1,196 crore, up 95 per cent Y-o-Y. For Q1 FY26, adjusted EBITDA loss grew 134 per cent Y-o-Y. Consolidated adjusted EBITDA was negative at Rs 810 crore. A key positive was the increase in average order value (AOV), which rose 26 per cent Y-o-Y and 16 per cent Q-o-Q. Management said the improvement was structural rather than seasonal. CM may also improve quickly, but Swiggy has paused store expansion in quick commerce, believing its current network of 4.3 million square feet across more than 1,000 dark stores can support 100 per cent Y-o-Y growth. Present in 127 cities, Swiggy will focus on deeper penetration in top markets, which should help margin expansion. However, competition remains intense. Food delivery GOV, up 18.7 per cent Y-o-Y, was driven partly by 10-minute 'Bolt' deliveries, which now account for 10–12 per cent of orders. GOV momentum is strong, aided by expansion into Tier-II cities. Food delivery's EBITDA margin contracted to 2.4 per cent due to rider availability issues and one-off fixed cost increases. Management reaffirmed its medium-term margin target of 5 per cent and expects a rebound from Q2 onwards as GOV scales. Swiggy remains confident of sustaining high-teen growth in the near term. Growth in GOV was driven by a rising MTU base and better execution, especially in Tier-II cities. 'Bolt' has minimal impact on AOV and is not margin dilutive since its unit economics are close to platform averages. In Instamart, while AOV rose 26 per cent Y-o-Y, order growth was deliberately moderated by phasing out low-value orders. The Maxxsaver basket-building programme helped consolidate demand. Non-grocery penetration remains low, but its share in GOV has increased to 18.5 per cent from 7 per cent a year ago. The company has unified the rider app for food delivery and Instamart, though dedicated riders still serve each segment. Gig workers can operate across both. Overall, CM improved 100 bp Q-o-Q, with further improvement expected in Q2. However, CM gains of Rs 1.4 per order lagged revenue growth of Rs 9.5 per order Q-o-Q. Swiggy's food delivery business is now growing faster than rival Zomato's 'Eternal'. If Swiggy achieves parity on EBITDA margins, analysts say valuations could re-rate in its favour. Execution has improved, given the rise in quick commerce AOVs, with management commentary described as optimistic. According to Bloomberg, 15 of 21 analysts polled after Q1 results (July 31) are bullish on the stock, while three each are bearish or neutral. Their average one-year target price is Rs 458. The stock, which was range-bound since July 31 until Monday, has gained nearly 9 per cent in the past three sessions and closed at Rs 435.05 on Thursday on the BSE.
