Jason Voorhees, the Iconic FRIDAY THE 13th Slasher, Gets a New Look for His 45th Birthday

Yahoo16-05-2025

Forty-five years ago, Camp Crystal Lake became synonymous with terror when Friday the 13th hit theaters. Although Jason Voorhees doesn't show up till the end of the movie (kinda), the iconic slasher nevertheless became the series mascot. Now, as a way of celebrating 45 years of Jason, we've learned (via Adweek), that Horror, Inc., the company that owns the Jason Voorhees IP, has revealed the character's new look. Fans got a look before its debut in the A24/Peacock series, Crystal Lake. And it's a very retro-looking design, harkening back to Jason's first handful of appearances. Special makeup effects legend Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead) helped design the 'new' Jason, which you can see below:
Here's what Horror Inc.'s Rob Barsamian had to say about Jason's new (old) look:
We strive to maintain Jason's original essence, while continuing to move toward the future with a defined look and feel that takes Jason into his next chapter. We're also working with both familiar and fresh franchise voices to strike that balance. We gave Greg our new 13-hole mask and worked together on this full body look that embodies classic Jason. He's a strong, towering and terrifying slasher with a machete, his weapon of choice.
The new Jason look will debut in the new Crystal Lake series, but will be consistent across all 'Jason Universe' media. So when the legendary slasher appears next in a video game, or that eventual new Friday the 13th movie, he'll look the same. From a corporate standpoint, we get it. But it's a little dismaying that a future director of a movie or game where Jason appears won't really have a say on the character's design. It's already pre-chosen.
The rights to the cinematic Friday the 13th franchise were in litigation for several years. But in 2024, original Friday screenwriter Victor Miller won the rights back. Whatever new movie that eventually comes out will be made in collaboration with him. It's now been 16 years since Jason killed horny camp counselors on the big screen. And that's just way too long a wait. Hopefully, this all means we won't have to wait too much longer for the thirteenth Friday installment.

Two U.S. steinholding records set at Big Bear's Maifest

Two national steinholding records were broken Saturday during the eighth annual Big Bear Lake Maifest, vaulting the mountain town into the spotlight of this growing competitive sport. Bob Shalak of Wrightstown, New Jersey, set a new men's U.S. record by holding a full beer stein with his arm outstretched for 25 minutes and 29 seconds. That time beat the previous national record of 23:40 and demolished Big Bear's local record of 18:33, which had stood since 1995, organizers said. In the women's division, Crestline resident Celeste Seiler-Zlatich also made history with a time of 6 minutes and 54 seconds. The previous national record was 6:10, set in 2022 at the Hofbräu Masskrugstemmen National Championships in New York City. Both winners earned all-expense-paid trips to compete at the U.S. finals in New York this fall. 'We're super excited to have two national records broken at our Maifest qualifiers,' said Big Bear Lake Maifest Director Monica Marini. 'These record-breakers have put Big Bear Lake on the national steinholding map!' Steinholding, or Masskrugstemmen, challenges competitors to hold a full liter of beer, arm extended, without spilling or lowering it. The weight of a full stein comes to about five pounds, which may not seem like much, but becomes progressively more unbearable as time ticks on. The growing national competition culminates each year with the Hofbräu Masskrugstemmen National Finals. The top male and female finishers receive trips to Germany. Shalak and his wife Chantelle, both passionate steinholding fans, flew in from New Jersey specifically to compete in Big Bear. He praised the event's welcoming atmosphere, saying it far exceeded other qualifiers they had attended on the East Coast. 'We've been to Boston, New York, and Philly, and none of those events were as welcoming and fun as Big Bear Lake,' Shalak said. Seiler-Zlatich, who competed in last year's national finals and placed fourth, said she is excited to return to New York with more experience and determination. 'I'm over-the-moon excited and so honored to represent Big Bear Lake Maifest and Oktoberfest and our beautiful mountain communities once again,' she said. The national finals take place Sept. 20. Maifest celebrates the arrival of spring, with traditions similar to that of the better known Oktoberfest. This is the second year that Big Bear Lake Maifest has operated as an official U.S. steinholding championship qualifier site. This year's Maifest celebration was held through Memorial Day weekend, and the following weekend, May 30 through June 1. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Season 7 of the hit Peacock series premieres tonight, June 3, and PEOPLE can exclusively reveal the first look at the Islanders' dramatic first night in the villa. The season will kick off with 10 total Islanders, five guys and five girls. Peacock announced the cast on May 29: Huda Mustafa, Olandria Carthen, Belle-A Walker, Yulissa Escobar and Chelley Bissainthe will be the first five girls in the Fiji villa, and are joined by Nicolas Vansteenberghe, Taylor Williams, Austin Shepard, Ace Green and Jeremiah Brown. In the first look teaser, the ladies are the first to arrive at the villa, and they pop a bottle of bubbly right away to get the good vibes going. Host Ariana Madix is next to arrive, and she asks if the girls are "ready to find your man," but Belle-A makes it clear she wants to "have a little fun too." Nicolas and Ace are the first boys to arrive, followed by cowboy Taylor, and then pool boy Austin and Jeremiah. "This can't be real life," Chelley says as the girls' excitement kicks in. Of course, there's a twist right off the bat. "This year, things are going to be a little bit different," Ariana teases. "Time to let your lips do the talking." Before coupling up, the Islanders get the chance to lock lips with any of the boys they've got their eye on, and some feelings are starting to form already. "I am not trying to be delusional," Olandria says. "But I am liking what I'm seeing so far." The kissing doesn't stop with night one, though. The following day, after five initial couples have been formed, Ariana returns to give the group a "chance to make a play for the person you maybe have a thing for, but haven't kissed yet." As one islander puts it, there's some "freak ass s--- going on" already in the Fiji villa. In the cast announcement released last week, all 10 Islanders shared more about themselves. Jeremiah described himself as an "emotional type of guy," as he admitted, "I really don't care if I cry in front of you." Ace called himself a "short king" who has "no problem talking to taller ladies," but will draw the line at being "little spoon." Pool boy Austin touted how "damn good" he looks "while cleaning a pool," and then came cowboy Taylor, who said he's looking for a "city girl" with a "big booty." Finally, daredevil Nicolas said he's "I'm down for anything" and "huge into extreme sports." As for the girls, Chelley admitted that she is going to judge her fellow Islanders based on their Zodiac signs, and Olandria said that "college football" is her "life." Belle-A was excited to share that she loves working in her family's coffee shop, and Huda declared herself ready to find her "lifelong partner." The final girl, Yulissa, revealed that she just got out of a "nine-year relationship," but she was "glad he broke my heart, because look at me here."
