
Samsung to make Tesla AI chips in multiyear Texas deal
South Korea's largest company announced on Monday that it secured the 22.8 trillion won chipmaking agreement, which will run through the end of 2033. The plan is for an upcoming plant in Taylor, Texas, to produce Tesla's next-generation AI6 chip, Tesla chief Elon Musk said on X, confirming a Bloomberg News report.
Samsung's Seoul-traded shares rose 6.8% to their highest since September, while its suppliers like Soulbrain Co. jumped 16%. A Samsung spokesperson declined to comment, citing confidentiality terms in its contract.
'The strategic importance of this is hard to overstate,' Musk, 54, wrote on X. He described the value of the deal announced by Samsung as 'just the bare minimum. Actual output is likely to be several times higher.'
The Tesla chief executive officer and X owner will walk the chip fabrication line himself and has been authorized by Samsung to assist in optimizing production, he said. The AI6 component will form the foundation of Tesla's driving hardware suite for cars in coming years. Samsung produces the current AI4 system, according to Musk.
The contract win, the first after Executive Chairman Jay Y. Lee was cleared of all outstanding legal charges, comes as Samsung has been steadily losing ground in chip manufacturing. The company, which makes its own memory chips and also fabricates semiconductors on behalf of clients, has had difficulty bringing in enough orders to fully utilize its foundry capacity. It has postponed completion of construction and operational ramp-up of its new Texas fab to 2026.
'Their foundry business has been loss-making and struggling with under-utilization, so this will help a lot,' said Vey-Sern Ling, managing director at Union Bancaire Privee in Singapore. 'Tesla's business may also help them to attract other customers.'
That's in contrast to leading chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which still cannot meet all demand. TSMC held a dominant share of 67.6% of the global foundry market in the first quarter this year, according to Taipei-based TrendForce. Samsung's share slipped to 7.7% from 8.1% in the previous quarter.
Samsung and TSMC are both on pace to deliver the next generation of semiconductor advancement — moving to 2-nanometer fabrication — and the new deal is seen as a signal of confidence for the company's upcoming fabrication technology.
While the contract may represent a small share of foundry revenue annually, it holds greater value as a catalyst for technological refinement and innovation over the long run, according to Ryu Young-ho, an analyst at NH Investment & Securities Co. It also helps burnish Samsung's reputation as the strongest TSMC alternative at a time when Intel Corp. is struggling to win over investors skeptical about its long-term strategy and road map.
At Tesla, Musk has said the company's future will depend on delivering the long-elusive goal of true self-driving technology. Last week, after a disappointing earnings report, he said the automaker will face 'a few rough quarters' until it can deliver autonomous vehicles at scale — which he predicted for the second half of 2026 or by the end of the year.
Yet there is still skepticism about that target. Musk's X posts following the Samsung deal imply that Tesla will adopt two different next-generation chips in short order that are crucial to its automated-driving systems. He wrote that the carmaker will go from currently sourcing AI4 chips from Samsung, to using AI5 chips from TSMC that have just been designed, to then using AI6 chips from Samsung.
The rapid-fire changes risk opening Tesla up to more blowback from car owners who were told back in 2016 that all the vehicles the company was making from then on had the hardware necessary to eventually drive autonomously. In early 2023, Musk said on an earnings call that Tesla was going to stop offering retrofits to customers whose cars were equipped with older-generation chips, citing the cost and difficulty of offering upgrades.
Tesla has made some progress in recent months toward competing with Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo by starting to offer a driverless taxi service in Austin. But the carmaker has yet to offer rides without any safety staff in its vehicles, and early users posted videos of the robotaxis appearing to violate traffic laws. The suite of features Tesla markets as Full Self-Driving still requires customers to supervise the system at all times.

Top Analysts Remain Bullish on AMZN Stock Following the Q2 print, Bank of America Securities analyst Justin Post increased the price target for Amazon stock to $272 from $265 and reiterated a Buy rating. The 5-star analyst noted the Q2 revenue and earnings beat. He added that while AWS growth accelerated 60 basis points quarter-over-quarter to 17.5% and was slightly above Street, it lacked a 'capacity-aided top-line beat' similar to Azure and Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Additionally, Post noted that AWS margins missed expectations, with over half of the 6.5 percent quarter-over-quarter decline attributed to stock-based compensation (SBC) and forex headwinds. It was also impacted by growing depreciation. On the positive side, Post highlighted that Q3 revenue guidance of $174 billion to $179.5 billion beat the Street's expectation of $173 billion, boosted by a solid Prime Day, with a profit outlook of $15.5 billion to $20.5 billion bracketing the consensus estimate of $19.4 billion. Likewise, Barclays analyst Ross Sandler raised the price target for AMZN stock to $275 from $240 and reaffirmed a Buy rating. The 5-star analyst stated that he suspected 'knives would come out on AWS,' given that rivals' June quarter revenue and backlogs accelerated on AI, and also due to the margin miss. That said, Sandler has not lost any faith and expects AI to add a couple of points by the fourth quarter on Anthropic and other applications built on Claude-4's API. Meanwhile, the analyst highlighted that Amazon's retail posted a strong quarter again, with efficiency reaching all-time highs. Finally, DA Davidson analyst Gil Luria increased the price target for Amazon stock to $265 from $230 and reiterated a Buy rating. The top-rated analyst stated that despite the accelerating revenue in Amazon's retail business and stabilizing growth in AWS, Q2 results were largely overshadowed by capex guidance that is expected to see infrastructure investments accelerate through the second half of the year. Nonetheless, Luria noted that management continues to reiterate that they're seeing an acceleration of customers' transition to the cloud, along with demand for compute still exceeding supply at AWS. 3 Reasons Why Palantir Stock Keeps Going Up and Up
Key Points Palantir has already doubled in 2025, and shares are up more than 1,000% since 2023. Revenue growth has steadily accelerated over the last two years, and operating margins have expanded. The company is winning new contracts with the Trump administration. 10 stocks we like better than Palantir Technologies › Few stocks have defied expectations the way Palantir (NASDAQ: PLTR) has. After going public in Sept. 2020, the stock nearly quadrupled in just a few months' time. However, by the end of 2022, it had plummeted over 80% from its peak as part of a broad sell-off that dragged down much of the tech sector. Since hitting its all-time low of $5.92 per share in late 2022, Palantir has delivered unbelievable returns. The stock was the top performer on the S&P 500 last year, jumping 340%, and it's on track to be the leader this year with a 105% gain year to date. The stock trades at more about $154 as of this writing. Along the way, Palantir has continued to buck the claim from bears that it's overvalued. Indeed, the artificial intelligence (AI) stock currently boasts a price-to-sales ratio of 120, which is nearly 40 times higher than the S&P 500 index overall. While Palantir is certainly expensive, the massive premium has yet to restrain the stock's rise. Let's take a look at what continues to drive the stock higher and higher. 1. Its results back it up Palantir's surge has followed major improvements in its business. Over the last two years, since it launched its Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP), revenue growth has steadily accelerated, and its operating margin has expanded as well. The chart below shows how far the business has come during that time (the drop in operating margin in Q4 2024 was due to a one-time stock-based compensation award). As you can see, Palantir has gone from a slow-growth, barely profitable company to a fast-growing, high-margin business in just two years, and a closer look at the business shows its key segments are outgrowing the company overall. U.S. revenue jumped 55% year over year in the first quarter as its deep data analytics products are catching on with private-sector clients. Revenue from the commercial sector was up 71%. As CEO Alex Karp noted in the recent report, the company's Rule of 40 score, which is based on a combination of revenue growth and operating margin, increased to 83%, which exceeds the conventional standard for an investable software stock by a wide margin. 2. It's become a favored provider in the Trump administration Palantir got its start signing deals with government agencies, and the federal government remains its biggest source of revenue today. In the first quarter, U.S. government revenue rose 45% to $373 million, which made up more than 40% of total revenue. Support from the Trump administration seems likely to continue driving its growth over the next few years. President Trump signed an executive order in March requiring the federal government to share data across agencies, and Palantir is poised to play a major role in that process. The company has also been asked to help Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) develop a new surveillance platform called "ImmigrationOS," and Palantir appears to be at the heart of similar pushes from the Department of Government Efficiency to streamline federal spending. Overall, the Trump administration's push for increased immigration enforcement, Palantir's history as a high-tech defense contractor, and co-founder Peter Thiel's status as a deep-pocketed Republican donor all mean the company is likely to see increased business from the government during the current administration. 3. It's a risk-on environment again The April sell-off stemming from Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs seems like a distant memory now, and the S&P 500 is back to setting fresh all-time highs again. AI stocks like Nvidia and Palantir have followed that trend with investors bidding them up to capitalize on what might be the most disruptive new technology since the internet. There are other signs the market is getting frothy as well. Development-stage companies with little or no revenue in emerging industries like quantum computing and electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles have seen their stocks surge. Investors also seem to have given up any concerns they had over Trump's new trade policies. That risk-on sentiment won't last forever, though, and when the market turns defensive, high-flying stocks like Palantir will see the most volatility. Investors got a glimpse of that reality earlier this year when the stock plummeted over 40% between mid-February and early April. For now, the business is racking up win after win, and its government contracts make it more recession-resistant than most software stocks. However, its eye-watering valuation still makes it vulnerable to even slight changes in market sentiment or to the trajectory of its business. Apple might be building its own AI ‘answer engine'
Apple has formed a new team to build a ChatGPT-like app, according to according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. This team — reportedly called Answers, Knowledge, and Information — is working to build an 'answer engine' that can respond to questions using information from across the web. This could be a standalone app or provide search capabilities in Siri, Safari, and other Apple products. Gurman also notes that Apple is advertising for jobs with this team, specifically looking for applicants who have experience with search algorithms and engine development. While Apple has already integrated ChatGPT into Siri, a more personalized, AI-powered update to the voice assistant has been repeatedly delayed. Apple might also have to alter its search deal with Google as a result of the latter company's antitrust defeat.
