Mike Tomlin: Steelers defense is capable of historic things
No Steelers team ever allowed more rushing yards in a postseason game, so it hasn't been that long since the Steelers defense made history. Head coach Mike Tomlin said on WDVE this week that he thinks this year's group is capable of making more, but he meant it in a positive way.
The Steelers have added veterans Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay, and Juan Thornhill to the secondary since the end of the season and Derrick Harmon, Jack Sawyer, and Yahya Black joined the front seven in the draft. Adding them to the likes of T.J. Watt, Joey Porter Jr., and Alex Highsmith led wide receiver DK Metcalf to call it the best defense he's ever seen. Thornhill made the same comment on WDVE and Tomlin was asked for his response to those claims.
'We feel really good about the prospects of this group. We do,' Tomlin said. 'We've got to write that story. We've got enough talent, we've got enough schematics to do big, big things. When I say big things, I'm talking about historic things.'
One big piece of the defensive puzzle in Pittsburgh is defensive lineman Cam Heyward, but he's been limited this summer as he looks for an adjustment to his contract after being named an All-Pro last season. A drop in production at that spot because Heyward is missing or not fully prepared for the season would limit the defense's ability to write the story Tomlin hopes to read come the end of the year.

Ravens and Commanders cancel next week's joint practice
The Washington Commanders were scheduled to hold a joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens next week ahead of their final preseason game. That joint practice has been canceled due to a scheduling conflict. The Ravens released the following statement. The Commanders play their second preseason game (Cincinnati Bengals) on Monday night, August 18. The Ravens are in Dallas on Saturday for their second preseason game against the Cowboys. The joint practice was scheduled for Thursday, April 21, with the two teams playing one another in the final preseason game on Saturday, August 23. Head coach Dan Quinn discussed the scrimmage cancellation ahead of Thursday's practice. "Sometimes schedules just don't sync up as it hits," Quinn said. "I visited with (Ravens coach) John (Harbaugh) last night, and it's always choosing the best choices for the players. So, every once in a while, it just doesn't sync up, and so, we're bummed, we got a lot of respect for them, and we're looking forward to it, but we'll get to see them a couple of days later after that." Quinn then said the canceling of the joint practice does not impact playing time in the Week 2 preseason game against the Bengals. Quinn said he's already made those determinations about which players will play and how much. Which Oklahoma Sooners player made CBS Sports' preseason All-America team?
The Oklahoma Sooners are entering a pivotal season for the program in 2025. After a 6-7 record in 2024, many are doubting what OU can do this year, after seeing what things looked like in the first season in the SEC. Others believe that the Sooners can bounce back in a big way this season, due to all of the changes that have been made in Norman since last November. On the player acquisition side, one of the biggest additions to the roster came in the form of former Cal running back Jaydn Ott. Oklahoma picked him up in the spring transfer portal window. Aside from the move to go get quarterback John Mateer to run the offense, the signing of Ott is probably the biggest offseason player acquisition OU made for the upcoming season. Ott was the first big name that new general manager Jim Nagy added to the fold, and Sooner Nation hopes the senior will be able to help jumpstart the offense from the backfield this fall. CBS Sports believes he has the capability to do just that. CBS Sports included Jaydn Ott on their preseason All-America team, which they released on Wednesday. Ott was the only Sooner to make the team, serving as the second-team running back behind Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love. Penn State's Nicholas Singleton was CBS Sports' other first-team RB, with Louisville's Issac Brown behind him on the second team. While he was at Cal, Ott broke onto the scene with a big season in 2023, showcasing his speed and dynamic playmaking ability. He was injured for a good part of last season, but the Sooners are hoping his breakaway, game-changing tendencies return to pre-injury levels. If Oklahoma can consistently get big-time plays from Ott at the running back position, it'll open up so many other things for this offense and take the pressure off of so many other parts of this team, including the defense and the special teams. Ott is healthy and ready to roll heading into the fall, and OU might have a really special back toting the rock in 2025.
