Deadline approaches for families to apply to new Georgia Promise Scholarship

ATLANTA - Hundreds of thousands of Georgia parents can soon apply for a $6,500 scholarship to pay for private school tuition or home-schooling expenses under the Georgia Promise Scholarship.

What we know
Students who qualify must either have attended a public school for two consecutive semesters or be kindergartners about to enroll. Parents must have been Georgia residents for at least a year unless they were on active military duty.
Also, only students who attend the lowest performing 25% of schools under the state's academic rating system are eligible.
For families trying to plan for next fall's academic year, the Governor's Office of Student Achievement has not provided an estimated release date for that list of schools. The first application window for the Georgia Promise Scholarship opens on March 1.
The scholarship program is a result of Senate Bill 233. It was signed into law last year. It limits spending to 1% of the $14.1 billion that Georgia spends on its K-12 school funding formula, or $141 million. That could provide about 20,000 scholarships. Critics have said lawmakers should focus on improving outcomes at public schools, instead.
What they're saying
Kyle Wingfield, President of the Georgia Public Policy Foundation, a group advocating for expanding school choice in the state, spoke with Good Day Atlanta's Kaitlyn Pratt on Sunday, addressing criticism.
"This isn't about public versus other. It's about the best fit for the child," he said. "We know one size doesn't fit all for every child. Every child deserves the chance to get into the education setting that will allow them to best have their needs met and fulfill their potential."
What you can do
There are multiple application windows. The first runs from March 1 to April 15. The following periods include June 1 to June 30; Sept. 1 to Sept. 30; and Dec. 1 to Jan. 31, 2026.The initial funding for approved student accounts will be at the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year, according to the Georgia Promise Scholarship website.

Encinitas council enhances city's homeless action plan with new initiatives

ENCINITAS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — As each community grapples with how to best handle homelessness and provide resources, the Encinitas City Council held a special meeting Wednesday night. The goal was to take a look at the city's Homeless Action Plan or 'HAP' and update it as needed. 'I respectfully request that you support the continued implementation of the homeless action plan,' said Encinitas resident Bob Kent. Community members filled council chambers to address the city's HAP, which was first established four years ago. It has three main goals including a community-driven approach to end homelessness, striving to provide supportive housing and increasing the availability of temporary and permanent housing. 'I encourage the city council to take bold leadership to site, build and fund an emergency shelter in Encinitas,' said John Van Cleef, with Community Resource Center. 'Let's do what we can to help the challenge people who are homeless, but also we need to protect our community and our downtown community,' Dave Dean said. Dozens gave their opinions and input before the council deliberated for hours on a list of initiatives to add to the plan. A big part of the new efforts will focus on legal enforcement, including addressing those who resist available services. The council unanimously agreed to increase staffing for homeless services, conduct a homeless point in time count specific to Encinitas, continue with programs already in the current action plan and focus on critically affordable housing. The council vowed to work with their county supervisor to further their goals and initiatives. In addition to the amendments to the HAP, city council also unanimously decided on creating a sign-up sheet for local residents to volunteer to take in unsheltered people and give them a place to stay. The city plans to revisit that initiative after Labor Day. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Driver killed in overnight shooting near DeKalb County apartments

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - DeKalb County detectives are working to learn what led to a deadly shooting on Flat Shoals Road early Wednesday morning. The shooting happened near an apartment complex and church close to Interstate 20. What we know While details of the investigation are limited, authorities say they were called to the 2500 block of Flat Shoals Road around 2:25 a.m. after reports of a shooting. FOX 5 cameras saw that investigators were focusing on a black truck that appeared to have crashed nearby. Officers were working to tow the vehicle away from the scene. Police have covered a body that was in the driver's seat with a white cloth. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner arrived on the scene to pronounce the victim dead. The investigation shut down part of the road for hours while crews worked at the scene. A large crowd gathered in the area. What we don't know Information about what led up to the shooting has not been released. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim other than saying that he was a man in his 30s. What they're saying A woman on the scene who identified herself as the victim's aunt said that she believes the man was visiting the apartments before the shooting. She's hoping that security cameras in the complex and around the area may help bring whoever killed her nephew to justice. "This was just nonsense. You just shot an innocent man in his truck - close range. They need to turn themselves in because we aren't going to rest until we get justice," she said. What you can do If you have any information that could help with the investigation, call the DeKalb County Police Department, send an anonymous tip through the free Tip411 app, or text 847411, followed by the tip.
