
University of West London RAK branch campus team wins prestigious award
A team of four final-year BSc (Hons) Computer Science students from the University of West London (UWL) RAK campus has made history by winning the Most Inspirational Project Award at the 2024 Nasa International Space Apps Challenge. Competing against 93,000 participants from 163 countries, the UAE team emerged victorious with their innovative project, 'Eco-Metropolis: Sustainable City Simulation' — marking the first-ever win of this esteemed award by a UAE team.
The winning project, Eco-Metropolis, is an interactive city-building game designed to raise awareness among youth about sustainability, climate change, and smart city development. Featuring different levels tailored to various age groups, the game teaches players how to make informed decisions about urban planning, climate resilience, and resource management. By incorporating Nasa datasets, the game provides a realistic and engaging platform to educate players on these critical topics. The project aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which focuses on building sustainable, resilient cities.
The team, consisting of Rikzah Noorul Huda Khattal, Umamah Ali, Samira Rafiq Khan, and Shafeeqa Fathima Jahangir, combined their expertise in coding, game design, data analysis, and problem-solving to develop the educational game. They transformed an initial idea into a globally recognised project that addresses crucial environmental challenges.
Shafeeqa discovered the Nasa Space Apps Challenge through LinkedIn, where a story about a previous participant inspired her to gather her friends. "When I came across the Nasa Space Apps Challenge on LinkedIn, I was inspired by a story of a woman from the UAE who had participated before. Even though her team didn't win, her experience stuck with me — it wasn't just about winning, but about using technology to tackle some of the world's biggest challenges. It made me wonder: What if we could do the same? That thought sparked the idea to bring my friends together. We weren't just looking for a win — we wanted to create solutions that could make a real difference," Shafeeqa said.
The team credited their success to the invaluable mentorship of Mohamed Mahmoud and Bansan Thomas George, whose guidance helped refine their project, as well as support from NASA, the UAE Space Agency, and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre. The team also credited the entire faculty of UWL RAK for their encouragement. The team's achievement underscores the UAE's growing leadership in space innovation and environmental sustainability.
This accomplishment highlights the UAE's commitment to fostering technology and innovation that tackles pressing environmental issues. The team's success brings global recognition to the UAE while reinforcing the country's dedication to advancing sustainability through groundbreaking solutions.

Tirzepatide Outperforms Semaglutide by 47% in Weight Loss
By Editor_wr On May 12, 2025 A clinical study has presented detailed findings from SURMOUNT-5, a phase 3b open-label clinical trial, evaluating the safety and efficacy of tirzepatide, a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, compared to semaglutide, a mono GLP-1 receptor agonist, in adults living with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related medical problem and without diabetes. At 72 weeks, tirzepatide met the primary endpoint and all five key secondary endpoints, demonstrating superiority compared to semaglutide across the trial. The detailed results were presented at the 32nd European Congress on Obesity (ECO) and simultaneously published in The New England Journal of Medicine. For the primary endpoint, participants treated with tirzepatide achieved an average weight reduction of 20.2% compared to 13.7% with semaglutide at 72 weeks using treatment-regimen estimand,1 a 47% greater relative weight loss. Participants using tirzepatide lost an average of 50.3 lbs (22.8 kg) and participants on semaglutide lost an average of 33.1 lbs (15.0 kg).2 In key secondary endpoints, tirzepatide was superior across all weight reduction targets with 64.6% of participants treated with tirzepatide achieving at least 15.0% weight loss compared to 40.1% on semaglutide. Additionally, participants treated with tirzepatide achieved a superior average waist circumference reduction of 7.2 in (18.4 cm), while those treated with semaglutide saw an average reduction of 5.1 in (13.0 cm). 'Thanks to the latest advancements in obesity management medications, more physicians and patients are witnessing significant weight reduction beyond what they have seen before' said Louis J. Aronne, MD, FACP, DABOM, director of the Comprehensive Weight Control Center and the Sanford I. Weill Professor of Metabolic Research at Weill Cornell Medicine, obesity expert at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, and investigator of SURMOUNT-5. 'The SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head results demonstrated tirzepatide led to greater weight reduction compared to semaglutide, providing further evidence to support tirzepatide as an effective option for obesity management.' 'These data confirm tirzepatide as a leading treatment option for people living with obesity and equip healthcare providers with critical insights to make well-informed treatment decisions as part of a comprehensive obesity care plan.' The safety profile of tirzepatide in SURMOUNT-5 was consistent with previous SURMOUNT trials. Adverse events reported during the trial were primarily gastrointestinal-related and were generally mild to moderate in severity. During the trial, 6.1% of participants taking tirzepatide discontinued treatment due to adverse events, compared to 8.0% of participants taking semaglutide. However, the study was not powered to compare the safety and tolerability of tirzepatide and the safety and tolerability of semaglutide. Gender parity: Driver of economic growth
The global gender gap score for 146 countries is 68.5%; compared to last year, the gender gap has been closed only by +.1 percentage points. Despite the efforts, the lack of widespread change has slowed the progress towards gender parity. If we progress at this rate, it will take the world 134 years to reach full gender parity, which roughly equals five generations. Though the increase is only +.01 percentage points compared to last year, 97% of the 146 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index have closed more than 60% of their gender gaps. Iceland is the only country that has closed 90% of its gender gap. While Iceland tops the list of the top 10 countries, seven spots are taken by European economies in addition to Iceland. Eight top 10 countries have closed over 80% of their gender gap. The Global Gender Gap Index measures gender parity across four dimensions: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment. Among the 146 countries analysed, the Health and Survival gender gap closed by 96%, the Education Attainment gap closed by 94.9%, the Economic Participation and Opportunity gap closed by 60.5%, and Political Empowerment by 22.5%. The parity in labour force participation stands at 66.7%. Though women's participation in the workforce is increasing globally, parity advances vary differently across sectors. Women's participation in leadership roles remains low across every industry and economy. Women account for 42% of the global market and represent 31.7% of senior leadership roles. LinkedIn data shows that women's hiring into leadership had begun to deteriorate from 37.5% to 36.4%. In 2024, 60 national elections represented the most significant global population that voted in many major economies. Gender parity in parliamentary representation reached a record high of 33.3% in 2024 and improved over time. LinkedIn data also reflects that men have more extensive and vigorous networks than women. Stronger networks are indicative of accessibility to more opportunities and outreach. 16 Gender1 According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), women's participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and non-STEM has increased. Yet, women remain underrepresented in STEM roles, comprising only 28.2% of STEM compared to 47.3% in non-stem sectors, as AI is increasingly used in businesses. Data shows that female talent in AI has doubled since 2016 — gender parity in the AI industry, education, professional services, manufacturing, technology and media have increased. According to Coursera, gender parity is the highest in collaboration and leadership skills, teaching and mentoring, empathy and active listening, leadership and social influence. Still, it is lower in AI and big data. As men and women enter the workforce after graduation, their skill sets are still shaped and valued differently. In conclusion, the scale and speed of progress are deeply insufficient to reach gender parity by 2030. The global community must recognise and accept that gender parity is difficult. All stakeholders, governments, businesses, academia and civic societies — must collectively participate and collaborate for broader engagement and strive to bring incremental change to accelerate progress towards gender equality in all sectors worldwide. Striving for gender parity has longer-lasting implications in a highly competitive and dynamic business environment and is a cogent thought that must be ingrained in every human mind. The world must raise the required resources and adopt economic policies to bridge the gender gap. It is only possible when there is a fundamental change in mindset to recognise gender parity as a driver of high-quality growth. The world must elevate to a condition of equitable and sustainable development, where we can make 50/50 a reality in the new paradigm of thinking. Gender equality leads to stronger, more resilient economies by promoting economic growth and labour productivity. UWL RAK celebrates historic NASA Space Apps Challenge 2024 win

Eco-Metropolis is an interactive game designed to educate youth on sustainability, climate resilience, and smart city development. Through various levels tailored to different age groups, the game incorporates NASA datasets to provide a realistic and engaging platform for urban planning and resource management. The project aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which focuses on creating sustainable, resilient cities. To honour this remarkable achievement, a felicitation ceremony was held on February 13 at DoubleTree by Hilton, Marjan Island, RAK.
