Haverfordwest Operatic Society revives Edwardian favourite
THIS summer, Haverfordwest Operatic Society invites audiences on a whimsical journey to Arcadia—the land that time forgot—where truth reigns, youth never fades, and harmony is the law of the land.
But paradise is thrown into turmoil when a Londoner crash-lands in Arcadia, bewildering the locals with tales of modern wickedness and city life. Determined to restore balance, Arcadian sisters Sombra and Chrysea travel to London, hoping to civilise the metropolis with their values of honesty and simplicity.
Originally opening in the West End in 1909, The Arcadians enjoyed an extraordinary 809-performance run before transferring to Broadway. With music by Lionel Monckton and Howard Talbot and lyrics by Arthur Wimperis, it remains a sparkling example of Edwardian musical theatre. The Stage once described the score as 'an absolute winner.'
This summer's revival has been adapted by Ifor Phillips, who marks his 60th production with Haverfordwest Operatic Society. He also serves as Musical Director.
'After so many years with HOS, I still find immense joy in watching a show come together,' said Mr Phillips. 'The Arcadians reminds us how uplifting theatre can be. It's classic Edwardian charm with plenty of laughs and a touch of magic.'
The production includes musical numbers such as The Pipes of Pan, The Girl with The Brogue, and the showstopping All Down Piccadilly.
In a special guest appearance, Pembrokeshire's own Emily Davis returns to the local stage in the lead role. Known to audiences as cabaret performer 'Blodwen,' Emily began her journey with HOS before launching a successful career that has included performances at the Wales Millennium Centre and the Edinburgh Fringe.
'It's lovely to be back with HOS,' said Emily. 'The Arcadians is such a fab show and I'm having so much fun popping down to Pembs and revisiting my old haunts!'
Mr Phillips added: 'It's always a source of pride to see former members flourish. It's even better when they return to share their gifts with the community that nurtured them.'

She shared: "This flat that I've bought, is in a social housing building, I have kind of given myself a 'get out' clause because it is slap bang in the area which I grew up in, so I don't feel like I am coming from outside and coming into the area and gentrifying it." JD Vance's secret service 'circus' takes over sleepy Cotswolds village
Locals have been left shell-shocked after US vice-president JD Vance and his secret service motorcade rode into their sleepy hamlet on his very British holiday to the Cotswolds. Taking time off from being ruthlessly mocked in South Park, the US vice president is winding down for the summer holidays in the hamlet of Dean, near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. But villagers are being overwhelmed by the 'Men in Black' like security entourage treating 'old ladies like terrorists' and implementing roadblocks that put a burden on the idyllic location. One woman told The Times the village had seen 'one blinking pantomime after the other' and said: 'We are used to the great and good here. Before David Cameron moved in we had Douglas Hurd and he was lovely. 'We have Ben Kingsley in Spelsbury and we see him in the woods walking his dog, but to close off the roads is ridiculous.' The woman told the paper she and a friend had been stopped by police blocking a footpath while walking through the area, and said: 'I told the police 'we are two old ladies, we are hardly terrorists'.' Another local told the Guardian police were knocking on doors asking for personal details of residents and their social media accounts. He said: 'I know several people refused. After Tuedon's enchanting routine to a Nina Simone track, there was Aurora Kirth's comic song about rats, Daredevil Chickens (Anne Goodman and Jonathan Taylor) 'suffering' the ultimate wardrobe malfunction; LJ Marles breakdancing and soaring high with the kinkiest kinky boots you ever saw, and a host of delightful follies and foolishness that enchanted the entire audience; there literally wasn't a dry eye in the house. We didn't need to butter up Tara Boom, she literally did that herself, before launching a popcorn assault from a tiny plug-in machine on her helmet, during which her clothes seemed to disappear as if by magic... Find out more at After a drinks interval, a majestic opera singer (Aurora Kirth has a rich contralto voice) began to shudder and falter emotionally during her climaxes... and sure enough a culprit emerged. There was smut; but it was such cheeky, joyous smut that even the prudes didn't mind; indeed I wanted more. A prone Tara Boom delivered possibly the sweetest moment of the show when one of five parasols she was juggling with her feet opened to cascade red rose petals across the audience... Ursula Martinez naughtily lowered the final tone of the show in a deliciously risqué set which combined her body with magic tricks involving a disappearing red silk handkerchief.
