Rio Ferdinand feelings clear as Jim Ratcliffe forced to abandon Man Utd project

Daily Mirror9 hours ago

Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League this season, and Rio Ferdinand has explained where the Red Devils should realistically look to finish in 2025/26
Rio Ferdinand has said that Manchester United should look to finish in the top six to eight of the Premier League next season. The Red Devils will be eager to quickly forget 2024/25, given they finished a dismal 15th in the league and failed to achieve silverware both domestically and in Europe.
And while many managers may have had their future thrown into question given the lacklustre campaign, Ruben Amorim - who was only appointed in November following the sacking of Erik ten Hag - has seemingly been given the benefit of the doubt by the board.

The Portuguese tactician was forced to work with a mismatched squad that he inherited when he entered Old Trafford. And, following Ten Hag's spending spree on the likes of Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Light inlast summer, limited funds were available in January for Amorim to start his own rebuilding project.

There were also fears of failing PSR regulations if they continued to spend frivolously. As a result, Amorim was only able to bring in Patrick Dorgu from Lecce for £25.1million, as well as Arsenal youngster Ayden Heaven in a deal thought to be around the £1m mark.
However, it appears as though Amorim will be backed by the board this summer to recruit suitable players for his system, with United already splurging £62.5m on Matheus Cunha from Wolves in the early transfer window.
And while there's still a lot of work to be done in terms of bringing in fresh faces, club legend Ferdinand has given his take on where United should finish next season should Amorim get the players he yearns for. Speaking exclusively to Mirror Football, the 46-year-old said: "I think if you finish 15th this year, United have got to be looking to finish in at least the top eight, top six.
"I don't think you should be looking outside of that. And that's from someone who only thought about winning the league at United. So it's a big come-down in that sense."
Ferdinand also agreed that Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Project 150 plans were a little far-fetched at present. The INEOS chair and Red Devils minority shareholder had initially planned to see his club win the league by 2028 in line with its 150th anniversary, but the stark reality is that Amorim may need more time than that to work his magic and slowly but surely build United back to the Premier League giants they were under Sir Alex Ferguson.

While an insider told the Mirror back in March that Amorim "felt he could get more from the current squad when he came in," they added: "There's no getting away from the fact that overall it's been a really tough watch - and that it's going to take a lot of time and patience to get the team to where they should be. You've got to be brave or foolish to think winning the league by 2028 is doable from where United currently are."
This, coupled with continually growing rivals in terms of talent, may force Ratcliffe to abandon his ambitious Project 150 plans altogether as United plan for a less turbulent future. It comes as Ferdinand recently launched his Career Transfer Hub with Talking Futures, with hopes of bridging the gap between teenagers and parents for planning their own futures.
Speaking about the initiative, he said: "I think it's about empowering kind of families to talk more about education, especially parents. I think we're comfortable talking about a lot of things, i.e. football, a lot of the time in and around the front room or across the table with your kids, but getting that kind of common ground when you're talking about education, sometimes it's quite difficult, even I've found it difficult at times.

"So something like this is definitely a good way in and a good avenue in to kind of having those conversations about what's next in your life, education wise, where do you see yourself going? What paths are you looking at?
"And this is a great, I think, avenue for parents to really kind of touch the paper and go, right, listen, here we go, and start walking their kids down the right path, giving them a little bit of autonomy over it, but also guide them a little bit at the same time. So I wish I'd had this when I was younger - although I had football, which I was quite fortunate with."
Rio Ferdinand has partnered with Talking Futures to launch the Career Transfer Hub – giving parents access to information on their child's education options just like football agents have transfer insiders, negotiation teams and career scouts. You can find out more here.

Soccer Aid forced to apologise as Tyson Fury drops F-bomb on live TV

Soccer Aid 2025 got off to a rather chaotic start thanks to Tyson Fury's potty mouth. The former professional boxer joins a lineup of major celebrities taking part in this year's event to raise money for UNICEF. Playing for England are the likes of Louis Tomlinson, Jill Scott, Jermain Defoe, Sir Mo Farah, and Steven Bartlett, with Paddy McGuinness in goal. They're facing off against World XI, which comprises Big Zuu, Dermot Kennedy, Tony Bellew, and Gorka Márquez, to name a few. Tyson, meanwhile, is on the management team for England alongside Wayne Rooney. An enthusiastic Manchester United fan, he has declared his pride to welcome England to Old Trafford for the game, which is his club's home ground. Although it seems all that excitement got the better of him ahead of kick-off. This led to presenters Alex Scott and Dermot O'Leary apologising to viewers, as the star dropped an F-bomb. Captured in the training room ahead of the teams taking to the pitch, Tyson gave England a motivational speech. During the talk, he told the players: 'We are f***ing Spartans.' Host Alex, 40, then told audiences at home: 'We do apologise for the swearing. 'It's Tyson; we don't know what's going to happen.' Plenty of viewers saw the funny side of things, with @TJ_DCFC then joking on X: 'Well that's Tyson Fury never being allowed back to Soccer Aid ever again'. 'Tyson Fury dropping the F Bomb at 6:30pm on a Sunday afternoon', wrote @Miss_Terreh, followed by a crying laughing emoji. @96_Mikeys blasted those complaining about his language, urging them to 'grow up', adding: 'God forbid Tyson Fury swearing on Soccer Aid, and people moaning and groaning already!' Fortunately, commentators Jason Manford and Sam Matterface also kept it light when they brought the incident back up later on. Before the players left the tunnel, comedian Jason quipped: 'They've taken the microphone off Tyson.' Sam added that while his earlier speech was 'explicit-laden,' Tyson had 'good intentions'. He also recalled Tyson's promise not to use his 'hands or feet' for the duration of the game while watching from the sidelines. But, as you might have guessed, Tyson went on to swear another time. Midway through the game, Alex checked in with him, asking whether England's strong performance thus far was down to his management. He laughed, saying he had merely been standing in the box, screaming, shouting, and 's**t like that'. Upon being announced as a Soccer Aid coach this year, Tyson said: 'ENGLAND MANAGER! Who would ever have thought it!? 'I have had some big fights in my career, and the prospect of leading my England team to victory this June fills me with just as much excitement as any heavyweight fight! 'Everyone knows that I am a huge Manchester United fan too, so it's even more special for me that the game is at Old Trafford this year—and I get to manage one of my heroes, Wayne Rooney! 'How can we lose!? The work UNICEF does all around the world is so special and so important. 'I really hope that you can come along and support us this summer.' Co-manager Rooney also plays in the match, having scored England's first goal this time. The pair were assisted in England's coaching journey by Harry Redknapp and actress Vicky McClure, while former goalkeeper David James acted as the goalkeeping coach. Joining them on the side of the pitch is Sam Thompson, who was due to play but was withdrawn due to injuries. The podcaster and reality star raised over £2million for UNICEF last week by running and cycling 260 miles in five days to transport the match ball from London to Manchester. His tearful Match Ball Mission saw him encounter various physical and mental obstacles along the way, with his legs ultimately left 'falling apart' and ruling him out of any pitch action this weekend. Liverpool chiefs fear Trent Alexander-Arnold repeat as Real Madrid eye new deal

Real Madrid have signed Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool this summer and are now reportedly looking to line up a move for one of his former teammates next summer Real Madrid are reportedly plotting a swoop for another Liverpool star after signing Trent Alexander-Arnold. The England international joined Madrid after running down his contract at Anfield, with the LaLiga giants paying £10million to release him from his deal early so he could feature at the Club World Cup. Madrid have signed a number of players in similar situations to Alexander-Arnold in recent years, which has allowed them to avoid shelling out huge transfer fees. Kylian Mbappe joined on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, while David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger also signed from Bayern Munich and Chelsea respectively after their deals expired. ‌ And according to a new report from Spanish outlet Marca, Madrid are looking to repeat this trick again with Alexander-Arnold's former Liverpool teammate Ibrahima Konate. The centre-back's current deal is due to expire in 2026 and he is yet to agree terms over an extension. ‌ The report claims that Konate has 'already started the countdown on his contract' and has rejected Liverpool's latest offer of a new deal, with club chiefs fearing a repeat of the Alexander-Arnold saga. Konate spoke out about his future after Liverpool's final Premier League game last month, admitting he is unsure what will happen. "You know, I just want to say one thing: Everything you saw on social media is completely fake," he said. "I didn't even ask for something from the club. They made me an offer, and I replied to them with something, that is it. The rest (speculation) that I want to wait until the end...I want this, all of it is completely fake. "And even the big journalists said in November I am very close to signing the deal. I was like: 'Ah, they have more information than me!?' Because it was not true at that moment and that is why I was a little bit mad because it was not true at this moment. "I knew at one moment people would think I didn't want to sign the contract but I was never close to signing it. We will see what will happen. First thing, I am very happy because we have won the Premier League trophy and we lifted it today. ‌ "We have to enjoy it, have a rest and hopefully next season will be better than this. I didn't expect the [contract] question this way! (laughs) But you are smart, you're smart. To be fair, to win a trophy, even when I won my first trophy with Liverpool, the FA Cup, was just amazing. "And today, to win the Premier League, I know I have a lot of objectives with this club: to become a leader, to win everything. I am very happy here to be fair, you know. But I know where you want to go with this question and this is another conversation with the club and my agent, we will see what will happen in the next few weeks or I don't know when but we will see, let me say that. "Progressing? Not really but my agent met the club last week but I don't know what will happen. I cannot say what my agent said to me but yeah, we will see what will happen."

Enzo Maresca left with huge Chelsea calls ahead of Club World Cup opportunity

Chelsea will represent the Premier League in the FIFA Club World Cup off the back of winning the Europa Conference League and there is plenty of intrigue surrounding Enzo Maresca's side Enzo Maresca has already won a European trophy and booked a place in next season's Champions League. But in reality, Maresca is still only on par. While no-one would admit it publicly, it would have been a failure if Chelsea had not lifted the Europa Conference League trophy and getting back on European football's biggest stage was always the target. And yet the Club World Cup offers not just the incentive of a £97m jackpot for the winners but also a huge opportunity for Chelsea. This could be the tournament which puts them back among the elite and, almost as importantly, gives them a chance to start shaping their future. This is also about what Chelsea can get out of this tournament as a squad. ‌ When appointing Maresca last year, the club made it clear they viewed the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons almost as two years rolled into one. ‌ Why? The unique nature of the Club World Cup threw up a new challenge but also a big opportunity. They have spent big ahead of the tournament in the United States, adding Mike Penders, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo and Liam Delap and putting them straight into their 28 man squad for the Club World Cup. They spent £30m on Delap and now comes the question over whether he can challenge Nicolas Jackson to be the club's first choice No9. Jackson can be rash, unreliable and temperamental as getting sent off at Newcastle in the run-in proved. But he is also strong, improving and, for Senegal against England, he has shown big potential. Now comes Delap who was sought-after by a string of clubs and it now remains to be seen whether he is good enough to win his place as first choice or provide the sort of competition which Jackson needs to focus his mind. The line-ups in the United States - starting against Los Angeles FC in Atlanta on Monday - should be very revealing about that striker dynamic. ‌ Equally, the keeper issue is yet to be resolved. They were so adamant that Robert Sanchez was going to stay No1, had the club's full backing - and yet then went for AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan. They could not get a deal done but may yet revisit it but stressed it was an opportunity which popped up. However, it still reveals that there are doubts over the keeper issue and they do have a young gem in Mike Penders who has been out on loan but is highly-regarded. ‌ Chelsea's Filip Jörgensen played the Conference League final but there can be no doubt that a convincing No1 would really improve the whole team and give the team more confidence. What happens in the United States should be really revealing on that front. Quite how far Chelsea go will also shape their plans for next season because they want to give players a break and yet the Premier League starts just five weeks after the Club World Cup final on July 13. ‌ That is a dilemma for a lot of clubs and managers. But the worry for Chelsea is that there is an acceptance they have still got ground to make up on Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City. But starting as a disadvantage while giving their main rivals a head start is exactly what Chelsea do not need. They must get the balance right between wanting to win but also being recharged and ready for next season. The other fascinating dynamic is that arguably Chelsea's most exciting young signing is playing at the Club World Cup - just not for them. They paid £29m for Estevao Willian who was courted by every big club in Europe. Chelsea landed him but allowed him to stay at Palmeiras for another year and the Brazilian club are in Group A. There will be a lot of excitement about this 18-year-old and it could catch light in the United States. He is so skilful, such a terrific dribbler and is hugely entertaining.
