Vikings QB JJ McCarthy Called Out in Brutally Honest Breakdown

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. J.J. McCarthy is set to take over as the franchise quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings. He will take over after Sam Darnold left town in NFL free agency and after the Vikings chose not to pursue another quarterback like Aaron Rodgers on a short-term deal. Behind McCarthy, Minnesota has Sam Howell and Brett Rypien as their next best options. The job is clearly McCarthy's to lose. While the talent and potential is clearly there for the Vikings' young quarterback, there are a lot of questions about him. He has not taken a single NFL regular snap, as he missed all of last season due to a knee injury suffered in the preseason. J.J. Read more: Vikings Coach Breaks Silence on JJ McCarthy's Progress Colin Cowherd spoke out during a segment of his show, "The Herd," and provided his opinion on the second-year quarterback. He's clearly not sold on the Minnesota signal caller. "There's so much mystery here. Why does Minnesota keep flirting with other quarterbacks? And there are too many conflicting reports on McCarthy," Cowherd said. "I feel like sometimes there's a bit of a spin job here. His arm and escapeability are modest. His release wasn't super quick. There's no great trait." Plenty of rumors have come out about the Vikings having potential interest in other quarterbacks. Howell was obviously acquired during the 2025 NFL Draft. Rodgers was connected to the team earlier in the offseason and Kirk Cousins has come up as a possible option as well. Despite the rumors of potential interest in outside quarterback options, McCarthy is still penciled in as the starter. Minnesota has opted to stick with its current quarterback room. Read more: Aaron Rodgers Reveals What Really Happened With Steelers Talks McCarthy has a lot of doubters to prove wrong and a lot of critics to silence. He will have every opportunity to do so throughout the upcoming 2025 NFL season. On a positive note for the young quarterback, he will have Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson, among others, to throw to in his first season as the starter. Aaron Jones will also be a weapon for him to utilize and will take pressure off of the passing game with his running ability. It will be interesting to see what kind of season McCarthy can put together. A lot of pressure is on his shoulders, but he's talented enough to handle that pressure and come through with a big season to prove the Vikings right for believing in him. Vikings, OC Wes Phillips agree to contract extension

The Minnesota Vikings will keep Wes Phillips as their offensive coordinator for a little while longer. According to Ben Goessling of the Minnesota Star Tribune, the Vikings and Phillips have agreed to a contract extension. Phillips' deal was set to expire after the 2025 season, but the team is adding one more year to his contract, keeping him on the coaching staff through 2026. Advertisement Phillips joined the Vikings as their offensive coordinator in 2022 after three years with the Los Angeles Rams on Sean McVay's staff. Before that, he was Washington's tight ends coach from 2014-2018, spending three years on the same staff as McVay and two years with Kevin O'Connell. The Vikings have ranked seventh, 10th and 12th in total yards under Phillips the last three years but will look to improve those numbers in 2025 with J.J. McCarthy taking over as the starting quarterback. This article originally appeared on Vikings Wire: Vikings, OC Wes Phillips agree to contract extension

Aaron Rodgers Looks Forward to Mentoring Will Howard: ‘I'm Gonna Help Him Out as Much as I Can'

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers revealed during his introductory press conference on Tuesday that he looks forward to serving as a mentor for rookie Will Howard. 'Will's a good kid,' Rodgers said. 'Got to talk a little bit. I thought he did really well today. he seems pretty bright. [The game's] not too big for him. He got through progressions really well. I'm gonna be with him every single day and every single meeting. Found my seat next to him in the offensive meeting… I'm gonna help him out as much as I can.' Advertisement Howard is chomping at the bit to learn from one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. 'I was fired up,' Howard said when he heard that Rodgers signed with the Steelers. 'Believe me. That's a guy I grew up watching, idolizing, and it's cool to be in the same room with him. Just hearing, first day, his thoughts and the way that he looks at things. He's a legend in this game. I'm gonna try and learn as much as I can from him and be the best support guy that I can be for him. I think it's amazing. The opportunity for me to learn and to work with a guy like that is second to none.' Having the chance to learn from a four-time NFL MVP like Aaron Rodgers will only set Howard up for success at the next level, and he knows that. 'I've been watching him pretty much, damn near, my whole life. There's a lot of things I've picked up from him. The things he can do with the football in his hands are kind of special,' Howard said. 'You got to make the best of your situation. I think him being here, for me, is like a dream come true, learning from a guy like that.' Advertisement Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love recently revealed that Aaron Rodgers played a big part in his development. 'In my time with A-Rod, we had a great relationship. It was awesome being in the same room with him, being able to learn. He was amazing with everything. And I definitely appreciate the way he handled everything on the outside with obviously him leaving and me taking over, and he's been very supportive of me [since],' Love said in an interview with Jason Wilde of ESPN Milwaukee. Brett Favre didn't necessarily welcome Rodgers with open arms in 2005, but that wasn't the case for Love. Rodgers made sure to be a good mentor. He also looks forward to facing Rodgers in Week 8 when the Steelers and Packers square off on Sunday Night Football at Acrisure Stadium. It will be Rodgers' first meeting against his former team since departing Green Bay after the 2022 season. Advertisement 'I was excited for A-Rod,' Love said when asked about Rodgers signing with the Steelers. 'I don't feel like I was too surprised. There were a lot of rumors going on the whole offseason about him going to the Steelers. I was excited for him that he was going to keep playing. It's going to be fun, it's going to be awesome. I'm excited for it. I can't wait to be on different sides meeting up and I know we'll talk pregame and things like that and hopefully we can exchange jerseys after.' Alan Saunders and Brendan Howe provided reporting from Pittsburgh.
