Squaring up! Wayanad top bidder on day one of premier chess league auction

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Premier Chess League (KPCL), billed as the world's first fixed 20-board chess league, was launched in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday with the unveiling of jerseys, release of the theme song sung by Usha Uthup and player auctions. Wayanad ruled day 1 of the auction with a top bidding of Rs 42,000. As many as 654 players have registered for the event, which will be held on September 6 and 7. The competition promises to promote grassroots talents and make chess accessible to all. In fact, its rule that each of the 14 district-based teams must include at least 10 Kerala players, is aimed at shattering the game's elite image and taking it into schools, rural areas and everyday community life, said the organisers. 'Wayanad did not even have much interest in chess. Today, it made the highest bid of `42,000 for Swayams Mishra, a Grandmaster. That's the aim: to popularise chess and take away the perception of its eliteness. The game should be accessible to all,' said Renjith Balakrishnan, the CEO of Premier Chess Academy who is organising the event. He, along with Deputy Chief Umpire K A Yunus, unveiled the jerseys for the umpires and teams on the day. KPCL features 25-member squads per team – 20 active players and five reserves. The 20×20 format ensures representation across age, gender and skill levels. Matches will follow six Swiss rounds before the semi-finals and finals, with blitz or Armageddon tiebreakers, if required. Renjith said the league is designed to transform chess into a spectator-friendly sport and give grassroots players a chance to compete alongside Grandmasters. 'This is not just about competition, it is about creating a culture where chess beginners and top players share the same team,' he said.

Surfer Ramesh Budihal's achievement inspires budding surfers, says Kerala Tourism Minister

The achievement of Ramesh Budihal, who created history as the first Indian surfer to qualify for the Open Men's final at the ASF Asian Surfing Championships 2025, gives a fillip to the attempts by Kerala Tourism to make the State as a popular adventure tourism destination. Lauding Mr. Budihal, who hails from the State, Kerala Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas has said his remarkable achievement at the ongoing championships in the picturesque coastal town of Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, underscores the rapid advancement of Kerala on the global surfing map, along with inspiring budding surfers to pursue their dreams in the exhilarating world of surfing. The surfing sensation from Kovalam in Kerala secured his spot in the finals after an impressive performance in the semifinal heat, finishing with a score of 11.43 points, which earned him second place. His accomplishment not only celebrates individual talent but also validates Kerala's dedicated efforts to position itself as a prominent hub for adventure sports, Mr. Riyas said. He dominated his heat with a remarkable score of 14.84 points, surpassing top competitors from across Asia, including the Philippines' Neil Sanchez, who finished with 12.80 points. The journey of the young man, who started surfing the waves of Kovalam and established himself among the top surfers in Asia, is a hope for the adventure sport buffs from the State. The State has recently hosted events like the International Surfing Championship, in Varkala, significantly attracting energetic youth to explore this exhilarating discipline and drawing surfing enthusiasts to Kerala coasts from across the globe. 'Kerala is at the forefront of major events in adventure sports,' Mr. Riyas said, highlighting major events listed on the God's Own Country's tourism calendar. All of these events attract global champions, helping Kerala to emerge as a model for adventure sports in India. They include the Malabar River Festival, which is one of Asia's largest white-water kayaking tournaments; the National Surfing Championship in Varkala; the Paragliding Festival in Vagamon; and the Mountain Terrain Bike Tournament in Mananthavady.

Virat Kohli resumes practice, shows first signs of returning to Indian cricket moments after white beard pic sparks fear

Virat Kohli is going nowhere. At least that's what it looks like. The Indian batting superstar, away from the limelight, just shared his first glimpse of returning to international cricket, sending a wave of happiness among his fans. Earlier in the day, a picture of him surfaced online, with plenty of grey hair, leaving fans worried. The Kohli faithful felt the end was near and feared the worst – a possible retirement from the ODIs, going by the amount of grey in his beard. However, Kohli, through a simple social media activity, confirmed that he is not done, and if anything, he is set for a return to Indian cricket sooner rather than later. Virat Kohli had his first hit in a while(Virat Kohli-Instagram) Kohli shared a picture with Gujarat Titans assistant coach Naeem Amin, in which both posed in what appeared to be an indoor cricket training facility. The backdrop suggests that Kohli, who hasn't played cricket since the conclusion of the IPL 2025, could have resumed practice ahead of his return, currently slated for October. "Thanks for helping out with the hit, brother. Always lovely to see you," Kohli captioned his Instagram story. What confirmed Kohli's training was that Amin was holding one of Kohli's classic MRF logoed bats in his hand. Kohli has flown under the radar and remained low-key since the IPL, making just two public appearances – going to attend Wimbledon and then gracing a 'YouWeCan' event hosted in London by Yuvraj Singh. He has, otherwise, been away from the public eye, and barring a couple of posts on X on the Indian team's performances in Birmingham and the Oval, Kohli has been, well, to put it simply, in hibernation. Who is Naeem Amin? Amin has been with the Titans since the franchise's beginning in 2022 and is the head of the Mighty Willow Academy. The academy is based in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and London, and is open to cricketers of all ages and abilities. Besides, Amin also played for Surrey CCC (2008) & Buckinghamshire CCC (2007), before serving as the national coach of Norway in 2011. He also served as the head coach of the MCC Foundation from 2013-2017, and before coming aboard the GT setup, Amis was also a coaching Assistant for Sunrisers Hyderabad from early 2018.
