Saudi Arabia reaffirms right to peaceful nuclear energy under NPT framework

NEW YORK — Saudi Arabia reiterated its firm position that the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) guarantees the right of states parties to develop, produce, and use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, including the exploitation of national natural resources under conditions of safety and security.
The Kingdom's statement came during the Third Preparatory Committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference, held in New York from April 28 to May 9.
Speaking at the session, Saudi Arabia's representative Sarah Al-Quba'a emphasized the Kingdom's commitment to its national atomic energy policy, which is centered on the peaceful use of nuclear technologies and the advancement of its national atomic energy project.
"Saudi Arabia cooperates with the International Atomic Energy Agency, and we affirm the importance of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. We reject additional conditions outside the framework of the NPT," Al-Quba'a said.
She underscored that the Kingdom believes peaceful international cooperation is the key to global prosperity, stability, and development.Riyadh urged all NPT member states to adhere to the treaty's principles, which enshrine the right to peaceful nuclear energy without unjustified restrictions.Saudi Arabia also called on advanced nuclear technology states to support the transfer of nuclear equipment and expertise to developing countries and to eliminate barriers that hinder access, especially for nations compliant with the International Atomic Energy Agency's comprehensive safeguards agreements.The Kingdom reiterated that nuclear technology should be made available to all treaty-compliant states without imposing conditions or constraints that fall outside the scope of the treaty's framework.

Regarding health services, the Ministry of Defense is implementing an integrated medical plan that includes the operation of 36 health centers with a capacity of more than 1,040 beds, supported by a mission of over 1,790 health and administrative personnel distributed across hospitals and field clinics in the holy sites.

The minister made the remarks during a meeting with heads of Hajj missions from various countries, held on the sidelines of the 49th Grand Hajj Symposium, which concluded in Jeddah on Sunday. Al-Rabiah directed the Hajj affairs offices to strictly follow regulations with regard to the movement of pilgrims within the holy sites, emphasizing pilgrims' safety and optimal ritual performance. The minister emphasized the importance of using designated transportation from Arafat to Muzdalifah rather than walking. He stressed that dispatch and transport plans are essential for organizing crowd movement and guaranteeing safety, deeming adherence a collective responsibility. Al-Rabiah underscored the pivotal role of the Nusuk card, mandating its use for accessing the Grand Mosque, holy sites, or public transportation. He affirmed the card is now a key regulatory tool for performing rituals and preventing violations. The minister said that this year will see a significant intensification of Hajj permit verification to ensure pilgrim safety and a complete Hajj experience, all within meticulous organization befitting the sanctity and grandeur of the occasion.

Dozens of Palestinians killed near Gaza aid distribution point in third day of shooting
JERUSALEM — Palestinians on their way to receive aid from a distribution site in southern Gaza have come under fire for a third consecutive day, with nearly 30 people killed and dozens wounded, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health and Nasser hospital. The ministry said Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians as they made their way to the distribution site in Tel al-Sultan in Rafah early Tuesday. The Israeli military said its forces opened fire multiple times after identifying 'several suspects moving toward them, deviating from the designated access routes.' 'The troops carried out warning fire, and after the suspects failed to retreat, additional shots were directed near a few individual suspects who advanced toward the troops,' the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement, which also said they are looking into reports of casualties. At least 27 people were killed and dozens injured, according to the Palestinian health ministry and the director of Nasser hospital in Gaza.
