Portuguese Helio Sousa has been appointed as coach of the Kuwait men's team, the country's football association (KFA) announced on Thursday.
The 55-year-old succeeds Juan Antonio Pizzi, whose contract expired earlier this year.
"Helio Sousa is the coach of the Kuwait national football team. Welcome to Kuwait," KFA said on X without providing further details.
Local media reported that Sousa has signed a contract with the KFA until 2027, reportedly worth $1.6 million per year.
Sousa previously enjoyed a successful stint with Bahrain, guiding the nation to the West Asian Football Federation Championship title in 2019 before securing their maiden Gulf Cup later that year. REUTERS

The 32-year-old defensive midfielder has agreed a season-long deal and will join the Villarreal squad in training on Friday. Partey was charged last month with raping two women while he was a player for the Premier League club. He is accused of five counts of rape relating to two women, plus a charge of sexual assault against a third woman, between April 2021 and June 2022. "The club is aware that the player is currently involved in legal proceedings in England. The player vehemently defends his innocence and denies all charges against him," Villarreal said in a statement. "The club respects his presumption of innocence as a fundamental principle and is awaiting the verdict of the courts, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts of the case. In accordance with British law regarding ongoing proceedings, the club will not comment further on this matter." Partey made 167 appearances for Arsenal, scoring nine goals after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2020. Villarreal, who beat Arsenal 3-2 in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, begin their LaLiga campaign at home to promoted Real Oviedo on August 16. REUTERS

Alpine skiing-Austrian Venier bows out as a world champion ahead of Olympics

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Super-G world champion Stephanie Venier announced her retirement on Thursday, six months before the Milano-Cortina Olympics, with the Austrian saying she was no longer prepared to risk her health and wanted to go out at the top. The 31-year-old Austrian won the first gold medal of her senior Alpine skiing career on home snow last February at the Saalbach world championships. Venier took part in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, failing to finish the downhill, and missed the 2022 Beijing Games. "The thought of ending my career isn't new -- it's been growing inside me for a while," she said in a statement. "The deep will and determination required for elite sport just hasn't been there in recent months in the way I expect from myself. "Even though the Olympic Games are coming up next year, now feels like exactly the right time to bring my racing career to a close." Venier, who made her World Cup debut in 2013 and was a junior world champion in Super-G that same year, earned three World Cup wins and a total of 12 podiums. Top stories Swipe. Select. The 35-year-old was involved a serious road accident in December when his car hit a tree on the way home from training, breaking his thigh bone in four places, and he did not play for West Ham again. Antonio joined the London club from Nottingham Forest in 2015 and made 323 appearances, scoring 83 goals to become West Ham's all-time leading scorer in the Premier League. "Michail will always be a much-loved and respected member of the West Ham United family. As has been the case since December, the Club will continue to support and assist him in his ongoing rehabilitation, offering him access to training, facilities and medical care if needed," West Ham said in a statement. "Dialogue continues over his future involvement with the Club in an alternative capacity - including one that would enable others to benefit from his experience and leadership qualities - and he will forever hold a special place in our 130-year history." Antonio helped West Ham win the Europa Conference League in 2023, ending their 43-year wait for major silverware. Antonio made his competitive action to return in June as a substitute for Jamaica in a CONCACAF Gold Cup game against Guatemala. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed.
