Cupra Born VZ fully electric hot-hatch is silent but it's deadly
I HAVE reviewed the Cupra Born on this SunMotors website before.
But this week it's the turn of the VZ model, Cupra's sportiest, most potent version.
So does this mean the Born is now a proper hot-hatch?
Yes, the Born VZ is packing 326bhp and 545Nm of instant torque because in case you didn't know, the Born is fully-electric.
VZ stands for Veloz in Spanish, meaning fast, and the Born VZ is also rear-wheel drive, not the usual format for a hot-hatch, as they normally are front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

EV HOT HATCH: Cupra Born VZ model packs a 321bhp fully-electric punch
Credit: Cupra UK
Key Facts:
Cupra Born VZ
Cost:
From €47,585 (from £44,635 in the UK)
Engine:
240kW electric motor
Power:
321hp
Torque:
545Nm
0-100kph:
5.6 seconds
Top Speed:
200kph (124mph)
Battery:
79kWh lithium-ion
Range:
508km (316mile)
Real world range:
444km (276mile)
Rivals:
Volkswagen ID. 3, MG4 XPower and Smart Brabus #1
So this means the Born VZ is more sportscar-like than hot-hatch — but it's no drift car as the grip is superb.
You can't fully turn off the traction control — you can change the ESC to Sport which means directional stability is restricted, but the rear end stays firmly planted no matter how hard you push it.
In its most potent driving setting, and my fave, Cupra mode, things really heat up and the Born VZ is its most lively with a noticeable increase in acceleration and its power delivery.
But it's just a pity the dash doesn't start to glow red or the ambient lighting change colour.

TOUCH OF CLASS: Infotainment is big with sharp graphics but heating and audio control operated via the touch screen
Credit: Cupra UK
Instead you see a small Cupra logo appearing in the driver's display, but this 5.3-inch screen is quite small to be honest.
The central infotainment screen is big, 12.9-inch, and the graphics are also superb.
Most read in Motors
But you have to use the screen to adjust the audio and heating via slider controls, although these controls are now illuminated at night which helps a lot.
And if you are on the Drive Profile screen then when you press the various driving modes you will see different images on the display.

SABELT SEATS: Cupra Born VZ Sabelt Cup bucket seats are amazing, heated and electrically operated
Credit: Cupra UK
For instance, Range displays a picture of a city, Comfort a motorway with mountains in the background and Performance is a twisty road.
Cupra is a racetrack and for Individual the clip is a Cupra workshop or garage.
But the Born VZ is also missing some sort of engine or exhaust sound, something you come to expect from a petrol-powered Cupra.
It's virtually silent, and Cupra already pump some sound into the cabin of the petrol-powered Formentor VZ.
5
CHARGING TIMES: Charging at 11kW takes 8hr 30 mins to go from 0-100per cent and using a 120kW DC fast charger takes 26min to go from 5-80per cent
Credit: Cupra UK
In Cupra mode its 2.0-litre turbo engine is amplified to sound like a five-cylinder Audi engine.
That really does ramp the experience up to the max.
So, sadly, the Born is silent but it's deadly, as it is an absolute blast to drive with superb road-holding.
The fact the battery is placed low and in the middle of the car means the centre of gravity is nice and low and it never feels overly heavy even though it weighs 1,999kg.
5
BOOT SIZE: Born's boot is 385 litres and that rises to 1,267 litres with the rear seats down
Credit: Cupra UK
VZ trim means it comes fitted with incredible Cup bucket seats that are made by Sabelt, a company synonymous with the manufacturing of performance seating for race and rally cars.
The are covered in Alcantara and have really deep bolstering, plus they're heated, electrically operated and the steering wheel is heated too.
Read more on the Irish Sun
It's a practical car too as it is a five door-hatch, the boot is a decent 385 litres and drop the rear seats for 1,267 litres.
It's not cheap, the Born range starts at €42,295 but the VZ model will set you back €47,585.

Over $100b wiped off Tesla's value after spectacular war of words between Trump and Musk
DONALD TRUMP AND Elon Musk's unlikely political marriage has exploded in a fiery public divorce, with the US president threatening to strip the billionaire of his huge government contracts in revenge. During a televised Oval Office diatribe, Trump said that he was 'very disappointed' after his former aide and top donor criticised his 'big, beautiful' spending bill before Congress. The pair then hurled insults at each other on social media, with Musk even posting that Trump was referenced in US government documents on disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, without providing any proof. The row could have major political and economic fallout, as shares in Musk's Tesla car company plunged and the South African-born tech tycoon vowed that he would end a critical US spaceship program. Speculation had long swirled that a relationship between the world's richest person and its most powerful could not last long – but the speed of the meltdown took Washington by surprise. 'I'm very disappointed in Elon. I've helped Elon a lot,' Trump told reporters in the Oval Office as visiting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz looked on silently. 'Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore.' Trump noted in a 10-minute diatribe that it had been only a week since he hosted a grand farewell for Musk as he left the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Trump later called Musk 'crazy' and insisted he had asked the tycoon to leave because he was 'wearing thin.' Advertisement 'Ingratitude' Musk hit back in real time on his X social media platform, saying the Republican would not have won the 2024 election without him and slamming Trump for 'ingratitude.' Such ingratitude — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 5, 2025 As the spat got increasingly vindictive, Musk also posted that Trump 'is in the Epstein files,' referring to US government documents on Epstein, whose suicide in jail while awaiting trial in 2019 sparked a major conspiracy theory. 'Have a nice day, DJT!' added Musk. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told AFP that Musk's Epstein tweet 'is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' because it does not include the policies he wanted.' Musk, who was Trump's biggest campaign donor to the tune of $300 million, separately claimed the Republican would not have won the 2024 election without his support and accused him of 'such ingratitude.' He replied 'yes' to a post suggesting Trump should be impeached, and blasted Trump's global tariffs for risking a recession. Trump finally suggested hitting the 'crazy' entrepreneur where it hurts, threatening Musk's multibillion-dollar government contracts including for launching rockets and for the use of the Starlink satellite service. 'The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,' Trump said on Truth Social. Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo Again Musk fired back, with the SpaceX chief saying he would begin 'decommissioning' his company's Dragon spacecraft – vital for ferrying NASA astronauts to and from the International Space Station – in response. 'Abomination' When the crossfire finally relented after several astonishing hours, Tesla had seen more than $100 billion (€87 billion) wiped off the company's value. Trump and Musk's whirlwind relationship had initially blossomed, with the president backing DOGE's cost-cutting rampage through the US government and the tycoon sleeping over at the White House and traveling on Air Force One. But the 53-year-old ultimately lasted just four months on the job, becoming increasingly disillusioned with the slow pace of change and clashing with some of Trump's cabinet members. The two men had however kept tensions over Trump's tax and spending mega-bill relatively civil – until Musk described the plan, the centerpiece of Trump's domestic policy agenda for his second term, as an 'abomination' because he says it will increase the US deficit. Washington will now intently watch the fallout from the row. Musk posted a poll on whether he should form a new political party – a seismic threat from a man who has signaled he is ready to use his wealth to unseat Republican lawmakers who disagree with him. Meanwhile, Trump ally Steve Bannon – a vocal opponent of Musk – called for the tycoon to be deported, the New York Times reported. BMW 1 Series used cars: I've driven 47 used hatchback cars – this BMW is by far a standout
OK, so 47 is an estimate, but I have driven a lot of hatchbacks, and the BMW Series 1 is a standout. The quintessential hatchback is, of course, the Golf, which in all its incarnations has delivered – but the BMW pips it, and I'll explain why. Advertisement 4 I'd always associated BMWs with committed middle managers driving company cars. A few minutes behind the wheel of the BMW Series 1 M Sport changed all that. I'm not going to say that the VW Golf has had its day (or make a joke that the current version of the car is as unfashionable as the sport, as that would be cruel). But the BMW Series 1 does everything you need a hatch to do – but better than the others. What is a hatchback? A hatchback is a car with a large rear door that opens to create a large boot space. Advertisement READ MORE BUYING USED CARS Hatchback cars are flexible. You can typically carry 4 or more passengers in comfort. When you need extra carrying space, you can lower the back seats. (Make sure the passengers aren't in there first.) The VW Golf pretty much defined what a hatchback is and what it does, and – despite what we've written above – we still love it. Reviewers know it still does the business, but the Golf spawned a whole lot of imitators – some of which are now ready to challenge for the hatchback king's crown. Without Musk, DOGE likely to fizzle out, says ex-employee
Without billionaire Elon Musk in the Trump administration, his cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency project is likely to "fizzle" out, a former DOGE employee has said. The Tesla CEO announced on Wednesday that he was ending his time as a special US government employee, but vowed that DOGE would continue without him. Administration media representatives also said in statements to Reuters that DOGE would continue its work. DOGE has overseen job cuts at nearly every federal agency as part of US President Donald Trump's attempts to shake up the federal bureaucracy. However, software engineer Sahil Lavingia, who spent almost two months working for the group, said he expects DOGE to quickly "fizzle out." "It'll just die a whimper," Mr Lavingia, who was fired from DOGE earlier this month, said. "So much of the appeal and allure was Elon." He said he expected DOGE employees to "just stop showing up to work. It's like kids joining a startup that will go out of business in four months." That would cap a remarkable undoing for DOGE, which Mr Musk initially vowed would cut $2 trillion in federal spending. Instead, DOGE estimates its efforts have saved around $175 billion so far and the group's tallies have been riddled with errors. The White House praised DOGE but did not comment on Mr Lavingia. "DOGE is integral to the federal government's operations, and its mission, as established by the President's executive order, will continue under the direction of agency and department heads in the Trump administration," White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said. Mr Lavingia, the 32-year-old founder and CEO of creator platform Gumroad, said he was recruited by DOGE through a personal contact and joined the team in March. While he said he was proud of certain achievements at the Department of Veterans Affairs, including modernising the agency's internal artificial-intelligence chatbot, he said he was often at a loss about what work he was expected to do. "I got dropped into the VA with an HP laptop. What are we supposed to do? What is the road map?" Mr Lavingia said he asked, to no avail. "I felt like I was being pranked." Veterans Affairs press secretary Pete Kasperowicz said in a statement to Reuters: "VA looks forward to continuing to work with its DOGE liaisons to help the department improve its performance, customer service, and convenience to Veterans." Mr Lavingia said Steve Davis, the president of Mr Musk's tunneling enterprise the Boring Company, ran day-to-day operations while Turkish-born venture capitalist Baris Akis helped with DOGE recruitment and DOGE logistics. Mr Davis and Mr Akis did not respond to requests for comment sent via the White House. When instructions did come through, they were usually communicated through phone calls or small chats on the encrypted Signal messaging app that would typically auto-delete in one day, Mr Lavingia said. He said instructions included moving faster to increase mass layoffs at the VA, the federal government's second-largest agency. The only time he met Mr Musk, Mr Lavingia said, was at an all-hands meeting in March with what he estimated was between 40 and 60 fellow DOGE employees. Mr Lavingia said he asked to open-source, or make freely available, some of his computer code, which Mr Musk approved. He then asked if they could livestream DOGE meetings to increase transparency. "Elon said: 'That's a great idea. We'll do it next week.' He then caught himself and said: 'Maybe we pre-record it because of security risks.'" Mr Lavingia said he never heard back. In early May, after he spoke to media outlet Fast Company about working at DOGE, Mr Lavingia said his computer access was revoked in what amounted to a firing. He said Mr Musk and team leaders never explicitly told him he should not talk to journalists. "My DOGE days were over," Mr Lavingia wrote in a blog about his experience.
