Dayton Public Schools students have been using RTA buses and their transfer hubs for school transportation.
The district said it will take them 18 months to get new buses, not including drivers.
'Dayton has a unique set of circumstances. We have the Dayton Public School system responsible for transporting young people to some 90 different locations, in addition to the location that we have within Dayton Public Schools,' Dayton Mayor Jeffrey Mims said.
Some city leaders have suggested changing transfer hubs to safer areas.
'Welcome Stadium was something they would do in the morning time. It would be a transfer point in the morning time. Honus could be a potential transfer point into the afternoon,' NAACP Dayton Unit President Derrick Forward said.

DPS approves new policies for students riding RTA buses

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The Dayton Public Schools Board of Education approved new safety policies for students riding RTA buses. This comes just days after the district was granted a temporary restraining order against a new Ohio law prohibiting the use of public transit through transfer stations for students. Why is DPS suing the State of Ohio over busing? DPS will now be able to offer RTA bus passes to its students while their lawsuit against the State of Ohio proceeds through court. During a meeting Tuesday night, DPS board members voted 4-3 to pass a resolution with new requirements for students using RTA buses to get to school. The new policies require students to wear a visible student ID in order to ride. Students must also agree to comply with the RTA Code of Conduct. These rules apply to both DPS and charter school students. Board members say this is only a temporary solution to provide relief to students and families while they navigate next steps. 'I hope that our families understand that the actions are really to help them,' said Karen Wick, DPS board member. 'We want everybody to have safe transportation, we want our kids to get to school safely, and this is a way we can do that.' DPS currently has approximately 3,500 bus passes that were purchased before the law went into place in July. The district plans to distribute these passes to students to use over the next two months.
