Rio Tinto's solar power and battery purchase for Gladstone aluminium operations praised as ‘right direction'

The Guardian13-03-2025
Mining company Rio Tinto will buy solar power and battery storage capacity for its Gladstone aluminium operations in a deal environmentalists have hailed as a 'major step' forward.
The company has signed 20-year agreements with Edify Energy to buy 90% of the power and battery storage capacity generated by the Smoky Creek and Guthrie's Gap solar stations, located in central Queensland, Rio Tinto said.
Kellie Parker, chief executive of Rio Tinto, said the agreements would provide 'affordable, reliable and low carbon energy for decades to come', as traditional energy sources became more expensive.

Together with existing wind and solar agreements, renewable energy was now expected to meet 80% of the Boyne smelter's electricity needs, the company said, reducing the facility's direct emissions by 70%, equivalent to 5.6m tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
Construction on the projects, located 75km south of Rockhampton, was expected to begin in late 2025 and completed in 2028, delivering 600MW of solar power and 600MW/2,400MWh of battery storage.
Rio Tinto said it would continue to investigate further renewable energy investments to support its Gladstone operations, which employs more than 3,000 workers, a third of which were based at the Boyne aluminium smelter.
The Edify Energy chief executive, John Cole, said the collaboration was an important commitment towards a sustainable future for the country's industrial sector.
Dr Tessa Leach, a senior industry project manager at ClimateWorks Centre and lead author of a report on decarbonising Gladstone's heavy industry, described the announcement as a 'major step in the right direction'.

Low-cost renewable energy would enable the region's energy-intensive industries to remain competitive, by making the most of its natural renewable energy advantages, she said.
To reach its potential as a hub for clean industry, Gladstone would need access to new wind, solar and energy storage projects at the scale required to provide for electricity, heat and alternative feedstock, she said.
John Grimes, the Smart Energy Council chief executive, said Rio Tinto's decision showed how quickly the world's biggest mining companies were moving towards renewable energy.
It also reflected increasing global demand for decarbonised aluminium, iron and other metals, he said.
'Australia's most energy intensive sectors are backing renewables because they are more reliable, cheaper and cleaner than fossil fuel alternatives,' he said.

Goodwick overnight motorhome and campervan parking approved

A trial scheme for overnight motorhome parking facilities at the Goodwick Moor car park, The Parrog, was mooted last year after a February 2024 council Cabinet-backed trial scheme for 'Pembs Stop' campervan and motorhomes facilities at four car parks was later dropped. It had initially been agreed that car parks at North Beach, Tenby; Goodwick Moor, Goodwick; Townsmoor, Narberth; and Western Way, Pembroke Dock would form the trial areas operating year-round at £10 a night for a trial 18-month period, with the intention not to create 'campsites'. That planned trial received national coverage, with a discussion on a phone-in programme on BBC Radio Wales. Local tourism businesses had said the proposals will harm them, and concerns about the trial were also raised by the official tourism industry group for Pembrokeshire, Visit Pembrokeshire. Following that, a special council scrutiny committee meeting was held last April where the scheme was overwhelmingly rejected; a later September 2024 Cabinet agreeing to not proceed with the scheme but instead trial an overnight stopover facility for motorhomes at Goodwick Moor car park, linked to the ferry port. A formal planning application for a conditional change of use of the Goodwick Moor Car Park scheme for a two-year trial period was later submitted by the council. Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council has objected to the application, raising concerns of noise nuisance to residents and other users, a lack of provision of facilities for overnight motorhome/campervans, saying the proposal would have an adverse impact on existing businesses and residents, a loss of community amenity, a loss of evening car parking facility for existing community groups, and poor road surfacing. An officer report at the July 29 meeting of Pembrokeshire County Council's planning committee, which recommended approval, says the scheme would see no physical changes to the car park but would 'allow for certain vehicles to stay for one single overnight stay,' and would 'regulate the existing activities of overnight stays which already occur on the site'. Approval of the scheme was moved by Cllr John Cole, a motorhome owner himself, who said it was 'about time our car parks were opened for such use,' adding: 'It's nice to see we are looking into this, I hope it will extend to other car parks in the area.' Members were told that, if approved, it was not expected the scheme would begin any earlier than September, with next summer effectively being the first proper trial period, with spaces on a 'first-come-first served' basis. Committee chair Cllr Mark Carter raised concerns about the scheme before members, saying he was 'uncomfortable' with a lack of any information on a management plan being available to committee members and raising concerns about any enforcement needed. The recommendation of conditional approval for a temporary two-year period was passed by 11 votes, with three abstentions.

Rio Tinto posts smallest first-half profit in five years

July 30 (Reuters) - Rio Tinto ( opens new tab, (RIO.L), opens new tab reported its smallest first-half underlying profit in five years on Wednesday, as iron ore prices remained subdued due to oversupply concerns and soft China demand, offsetting higher earnings from its copper business. Iron ore prices eased in the first half of the year as steel production in top consumer China declined and more supply from Australia, Brazil, and South Africa came to the global market, denting Rio Tinto's earnings from the steel-making raw material. Expectations that China will curb overcapacity in the steel sector and restocking before 2025-end could underpin a pickup in prices, opens new tab to $100 per metric ton towards the year-end, according to a note by Morgan Stanley. Rio Tinto, the world's largest iron ore producer, reported underlying earnings of $4.81 billion for the six months ended June 30, missing a Visible Alpha consensus of $5.05 billion. This was the company's weakest first-half performance since 2020. Last year, it reported underlying earnings of $5.75 billion. Rio Tinto, which is increasingly shifting its focus to copper, declared an interim dividend of $1.48 per share for the first half of the year, lower than the $1.77 apiece it gave out last year.
