Dollar steadies after rally, focus shifts to US-China trade talks

Reutersa day ago

June 9 (Reuters) - The dollar held steady against all major currencies on Monday, as exuberance over an upbeat U.S. employment report gave way to caution ahead of pivotal U.S.-China trade talks set to take place in London later in the day.
The talks come at a crucial time for both economies, with China grappling with deflation and trade uncertainty dampening sentiment among U.S. businesses and consumers, prompting investors to reassess the dollar's safe-haven status.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are expected to represent the U.S. at the trade talks, while vice premier He Lifeng would likely be present with the Chinese delegation.
"A deal to keep talking might be better than nothing, but unless we see a concrete breakthrough, the impact on sentiment is likely to remain muted," said Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo Markets.
Friday's upbeat U.S. jobs report yielded some relief for investors following other bleak economic data last week.
The dollar advanced against major peers after the employment report, which cut weekly declines in the dollar index by more than half. However, it is still down by more than 8.6% for the year.
On Monday, the yen firmed 0.10% at 144.750 per dollar, as data showed Japan's economy contracted at a slower-than-expected pace in the January-March period.
The Swiss franc was steady at 0.8221 per dollar by 0041 GMT. The euro was last flat at $1.1399, while the sterling fetched $1.3535.
The dollar index, which measures the U.S. currency against six others, was steady at 99.169. The yield on 10-year Treasury notes was flat in early Asia trading, after a more than 10 basis points jump on Friday.
New Zealand's dollar last bought $0.6020, while the Australian dollar inched up 0.1% at $0.65 in light volumes as markets were closed for a public holiday.
An inflation report out of the U.S. for the month of May will be in the spotlight later in the week as investors and Federal Reserve policymakers look for evidence on the damage trade restrictive policies have had on the economy.
Fed officials are in a blackout period ahead of their policy meeting next week, but they have signalled that they are in no rush to cut interest rates and signs of better-than-feared economic resilience are likely to further cement their stance.
Interest rate futures indicate that investors are anticipating the central bank may cut borrowing costs by 25 basis points, with the earliest move expected in October this year, according to data compiled by LSEG.
"May is the first month where the impact of Trump's 10% universal tariff on imports ex-USMCA is expected to show. The Fed will want a few months of inflation data in order to judge the tariff impact and most importantly, its persistence," analysts at ANZ Bank said.
Elsewhere, China's offshore yuan was last at 7.187 per dollar ahead of inflation and trade data.

FirstGroup shares soar on full-year profit beat, eyes UK transport opportunities

June 10 (Reuters) - British public transport operator FirstGroup (FGP.L), opens new tab reported full-year profit ahead of market expectations on Tuesday, helped by strong performance of its bus division and recent acquisitions. Shares in the London-listed company, which carries more than a million passengers daily on its buses and trains, rose more than 6% after it also announced an additional share buyback of 50 million pounds and raised dividend by 18% to 6.5 pence a share. Britain, as part of a new spending review, pledged 15.6 billion pounds ($21.04 billion) for transport projects targeting cities outside London, which have long been underfunded. "We intend to build up a good, strong bid team and we intend to participate in the opportunities as and when they come to market," CEO Graham Sutherland told Reuters, adding that he expects further details on the government's spending plans on Wednesday. FirstGroup has been expanding its bus network across Britain, including by entering the London market earlier this year with its acquisition of RATP London. Its First Bus service, which caters to about a fifth of the UK population, reported revenue of 1.08 billion pounds for the year ended March 29, ahead of expectations of 1.05 billion pounds, according to a company-compiled consensus. The company also acquired track access for two open access services between London Euston and Stirling and between London Paddington and South Wales, last year. FirstGroup was looking at further acquisitions this year, Sutherland said. Sutherland expects growth in buses and its open access rail companies such as Hull trains and Lumo. This is likely to counter the hit from nationalization of some of its railway projects. Nationalisation of its South Western Railway unit, which happened in May, will hit the company's fiscal 2026 revenue, Sutherland said. The unit contributed about 1.18 billion pounds in revenue in fiscal 2025. The Aberdeen-based company posted adjusted earnings per share of 19.3 pence for the year, ahead of company-compiled consensus of 18.9 pence. ($1 = 0.7414 pounds)

India, China seen aggressively buying palm oil in short term, industry expert says

JAKARTA, June 10 (Reuters) - Demand for palm oil from India and China is expected to increase in coming months as recent price corrections provide attractive entry points for the big buyers, an industry expert said on Tuesday. Prices of palm oil in Malaysia gained nearly 20% last year, but shed around 12% so far this year as the high prices led to palm oil losing some competitive edge to rival oils such as soyoil. "We feel in the short term, those markets will come back. We see heavy buying from India, China," Julian McGill, managing director of advisory firm Glenauk Economics, said. "We're not worried for the next year about a build up in stocks," he told participants at a palm oil forum in Jakarta. He noted Indian buyers, who have been cutting palm oil imports since December, are coming back strongly with purchase for June to August as prices of palmolein are at a discount compared to rival oils. He said China's physical palm oil importers were also actively buying for June to August deliveries. "The Chinese buyers may stock up quite a lot because their stocks are relatively low," McGill said. The demand would help keep palm oil prices between 3,900 ringgit and 4,200 ringgit per metric ton in the coming six months, he said. The main palm oil contract in Malaysian bourse closed at 3,864 ringgit per ton on Tuesday. The sustainability of the demand would continue to depend on palm price competitiveness against other oils, with peak export volumes seen around August, McGill added.

Investments in UK tech sector will create hundreds of jobs, says Government

Hundreds of jobs are set to be created across the UK as part of a raft of investments in the technology sector, the Government has announced. It comes as Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle told an audience at London Tech Week that the UK must be at 'the cutting edge' of rapidly growing technologies, such as AI. The technology sector is a key area of the Government's efforts to accelerate growth in the UK economy, in a bid to support efforts to increase spending. Liquidity is planning over the next five years" data-source=""> On Tuesday, a number of 'significant investments' in the sector were announced in areas including AI and fintech, which will see some companies setting up in the UK for the first time. Liquidity, a US-based AI fintech business, revealed it will launch its European headquarters in London as part of a plan to invest an additional £1.5 billion over the next five years. Meanwhile, Capgemini said it will expand UK operations with a new London headquarters. Netcompany, a Danish IT consultancy, will also invest £2 million to expand its Leeds office and is launching a new site in Edinburgh, which will ultimately create 150 jobs. Other investments include InnovX AI, a major European start-up hub, investing £14.7 million in a new London technology site, creating 30 jobs. Mr Kyle said: 'We have all seen over the last few years, just how rapidly and profoundly technologies like AI are transforming the economy, and our society. 'Britain can – and must – be at the cutting edge of this change. 'The era of hesitancy is over: we can be the masters of our fate, and through the measures I am announcing today, we will harness the vast potential of our trillion-pound tech sector to help remake our country for the better.' The Government said on Tuesday that it was opening its Science and Technology Venture Capital Fellowship for a second cohort and round of applications, to increase the capacity of the UK financial sector to invest in start-up businesses in the sector. Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said: 'Securing valuable high-tech investment is an integral mission of this government and seeing global investors put billions in the UK economy shows the plan for change is working, with more and more companies choosing Britain. 'With tech being identified as a key growth sector in our upcoming modern industrial strategy, we're not only helping attract and secure investment, but delivering long-term, stable growth that supports skilled jobs and raises living standards across the UK.'
