The WNBA is a cutthroat league. The limited number of roster spots on every team leads to highly talented college players being cut every year and players having to grind it out each offseason and preseason to try and make the cut.
For former Oregon Ducks star Deja Kelly, that grind has become a reality. After being named a three-time First-Team ACC All-American at North Carolina and then leading the Ducks to the NCAA tournament in 2024, Kelly went without hearing her name called in the WNBA draft earlier this spring. She signed a training camp contract with the Aces, and has been practicing and playing in preseason.
So far, she's doing a good job of trying to earn a roster spot. Through two games, she's averaging 12 points per game and adding 1.5 assists per game on 75% shooting from the field.
Kelly was particularly impressive on Tuesday night in the Aces' preseason win over the Chicago Sky, where she scored 15 points with two assists. More importantly, she came up in the clutch, scoring three straight buckets late in the fourth quarter to help clinch the 85-84 win.
That performance was good enough for Kelly to survive the first round of roster cuts. Las Vegas cut down from 16 to 14 players on Wednesday, releasing Queen Egbo and Harmoni Turner. WNBA teams have to cut down to 12 players by the start of the regular season on May 16, and many choose to go with 11-player rosters to allow for more flexibility when it comes to cap space.
If Kelly continues to play like she has in the preseason, it's not hard to think that she could make the final roster in Las Vegas. However, with a pair of championships in 2022 and 2023, the Aces are an elite team with a stacked roster, so earning a spot won't come easily.

WNBA's TV ratings drop with Fever's Caitlin Clark sidelined due to injury: report
The WNBA has seen a significant drop in TV ratings while Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark remains sidelined with a quad injury. Clark has missed five straight games after she strained a quadriceps during the Fever's 90-88 loss to the New York Liberty last month. Initially, she was expected to miss two weeks, but the second-year guard has yet to be cleared for Saturday's game against the Liberty, which will mark three weeks. Her absence on the court has not only hurt the Fever. It's hurt the WNBA's TV ratings. USA Today reported Thursday that, according to Nielsen data, nationally televised WNBA viewership is down 55% since Clark was injured May 24. The report said nationally televised Fever games are also down 53%. OutKick clarified those numbers, reporting that of the four previous games Clark played in, two were aired on CBS and ABC. A third was broadcast on NBA TV, and a fourth was not rated by Nielsen because it was broadcast on Amazon Prime. Three of the four Fever games after Clark was injured were aired on either NBA TV or ION. And the Fever's most recent game against the Chicago Sky drew an average of 1.92 million viewers, the WNBA announced Tuesday. Those numbers reflect the third-highest viewership for a game carried by CBS. It was also a big increase over the network's average regular season game viewership. But it was a drop from the season opener between those two teams. Fever head coach Stephanie White said Monday the team is ready for Clark to start "ramping back up," but she did not say if she was cleared yet for basketball activities. White added Thursday that Clark and Sophie Cunningham, who's been sidelined since May 30, had "limited" reps during practice. Notre Dame hires alum Jas Smith as Director of Operations for women's basketball
Notre Dame women's basketball has added a new member to the front-office family. Jas Smith is the new Director of Operations for the Fighting Irish. The 2016 Notre Dame graduate is returning after serving as the director of operations for LSU football since January of 2022. It's no shock that Smith was working for former Notre Dame football head coach Brian Kelly in Baton Rouge -- she served as his coordinator of on-campus recruiting at Notre Dame from 2018-2021. Advertisement Before that, she was an ambassador for Notre Dame football while an undergraduate student in South Bend. She has a degree in information technology management from Notre Dame. She also worked as an admissions counselor at Notre Dame from 2016-2017. She worked as a director for undergraduate admissions at Nova Southeastern University after leaving Notre Dame, and she had a stop at the Special Olympics in Miami, where she was a senior sports manager, in 2021 when she was between stints working for Kelly. She'll be working under new men's and women's basketball general manager Pat Garrity. The men's team is continuing to try to rebuild, while the women's team will be working to get over a disappointing Sweet 16 loss in last season's tournament.
