'Past COVID hospitalisation, a family history of sudden death, and certain lifestyle behaviours increased the likelihood of sudden deaths [in young adults],' Dr. Murhekar said, adding that research had, in fact, indicated the positive effect of vaccination.
There was no urgency or need for the reintroduction of the COVID-19 vaccine as a booster dose now, Dr. Murhekar said. 'As of now, we aren't seeing any major spikes in COVID cases, and there are no trends indicating the need for booster doses. We also know that newer variants are escaping vaccination cover so we need not rush into getting booster doses as of now,' he said.
Baseless linking of COVID-19 vaccination to sudden deaths could hamper the vaccination programmes for other diseases, he cautioned. 'It is easy to blame vaccination without any scientific basis but the negative impact it has on the overall acceptance and adherence to vaccination trial participations and use suffers,' Dr. Murhekar said.

Satheesan calls for Minister's resignation citing crisis in Kerala's health sector
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan has accused the Left Democratic Front (LDF) of gross negligence in the health sector and demanded the resignation of Health Minister Veena George following the tragic incident at Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital where a woman lost her life after a building collapsed. 'Now, who really fits that label?' he asked. Mr. Satheesan alleged that the entire health system is on a ventilator, and the Health Minister stands guilty before the public. 'She is repeatedly making mistakes, and yet the party is shielding her. Even doctors and officials aligned with the Left admits the truth,' he said, demanding her immediate resignation. 'The PR machinery is working overtime to shield the government. But we will expose every act of negligence and corruption in the health sector,' Mr. Satheesan said. Communicable diseases Highlighting the deteriorating state of public hospitals, he pointed out that Kerala now leads the country in communicable diseases, yet government hospitals lack basic drugs and surgical equipment. The government reportedly owes ₹1,100 crore to the Kerala Medical Services Corporation alone. 'In places like Kozhikode and Thrissur Government Medical College Hospitals, patients are forced to carry scissors, thread, and cotton to hospitals,' he added. 'The health sector is in shambles, and the people are paying the price for the government's arrogance and incompetence,' the Opposition Leader said. 'The Health Minister must take the responsibility and step down. This is no longer a political demand, but a moral necessity.'

Foundation stone laid for Viral Research Diagnostic Lab in Kurnool
Minister for Industries and Commerce T.G. Bharath on Saturday (July 5) said he was committed to developing the Kurnool Government General Hospital. The Minister was here to lay the foundation stone for a Viral Research Diagnostic Lab (VRDL) on the premises of Kurnool Medical College. He said both the GGH and the medical college are prestigious institutions that produced several eminent doctors. 'We are taking steps to develop the hospital on a par with corporate hospitals,' he said. He said the VRDL would help doctors get key tests done in the hospital. The lab is being constructed with Central funds, and the contractor has been asked to complete the construction within three months. 'We will also take steps to complete the construction of the out-patient section, which was halted mid-way after the previous government did not release funds,' he said, adding they recently began 120-slice CT scan provision in the hospital. Officials said with the setting up of VRDL, confirmatory tests for flu, dengue, malaria, COVID and other virus-related ailments could be conducted at the hospital itself. The Centre is spending ₹60 lakh to set up of the lab. Adoni MLA P.V. Pardhasarathi, medical college principal Chitti Narsamma and GGH superintendent Venkateswarlu were present.
