Banahan backs Bath to continue treble bid with Challenge Cup glory

Yahoo01-05-2025

Matt Banahan is backing treble-chasing Bath to go all the way in this year's EPCR Challenge Cup.
Johann van Graan's outfit travel to Hive Stadium to face Edinburgh on Saturday (live on Premier Sports 2 from 2.30pm) in a bid to reach the final in Cardiff and complete the second leg of what would be a historic hat-trick of trophies for the club.
Former player Banahan is part of the Premier Sports team bringing every minute of live action and all the analysis for the four box office EPCR semi-finals this weekend and believes Edinburgh must be aware of the strength of Bath's pack, as well as the star-studded backline, if they have a chance of success.
The Rec-based outfit powered past fellow Gallagher Premiership Rugby side Gloucester Rugby 61-26 in the quarter-finals to book their ticket to the Scottish capital after dispatching Pau 49-24 in the previous round, having dropped down from the Investec Champions Cup.
Meanwhile, Edinburgh enjoyed a pair of home victories over South African sides Lions and Bulls to book their spot in the last four, but Banahan believes his former side will have no fear when they get north of the border.
'Bath are the favourites for me, both for this game and the competition,' he said.
'I think they were probably upset with how they started in the Investec Champions Cup and with the loss at Treviso, because I think apart from sides like Leinster, Toulouse and Bordeaux, their squad is probably up there as one of the best in Europe.
'I think they know their favourites for Europe and the Premiership.
'As they say, pressure is a privilege, and they are performing well.
'And when you watch them play, they play like a very confident team that backs themselves, no matter what.
'Sometimes they ship 20 points, but they back themselves to score 40.
'That is where you see great teams grow, and at the moment, they are the team that everybody is trying to catch up with.
'They know they have got the favourite tag, but they deserve it, and now it is time for them to go out and perform.'
Bath currently sit top of the Gallagher Premiership and secured themselves a home semi-final with their win over Newcastle last weekend.
This week is all about international club rugby action as the semi-finals of the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup take centre stage.
'Bath's forward pack is a huge weapon,' he continued.
'Edinburgh will need to nullify that if they are to have the edge in this game, and they must start the game well and manage it from there.
'The way Bath have got a lot of points this season is through sides trying to arm-wrestle their forwards, tiring out, and then at the end of the game, Bath bring on another five international-standard forwards.
'That is when teams open up the dam, and the water comes through, and the points flow.
'If Edinburgh want to be in the game, they have got to play smart at the start, move the ball around and not get caught out when the subs come on.'
Premier Sports is the home of Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup with 80 games live throughout the competition including this weekend's semi-finals and both Finals on 23 and 24 May live from Principality Stadium, Cardiff. Johnny Sexton insists he is ‘here to help' Finn Russell despite past Lions criticism

Johnny Sexton has insisted he is 'here to help' Finn Russell in his capacity as British & Irish Lions assistant coach, after the pair shook hands and cleared the air last month following the former Ireland captain's previous criticism of the Scotland fly-half. Sexton toured with the Lions in 2013 and 2017 but was a surprise omission from Warren Gatland's squad in 2021. In his autobiography, the former Ireland captain revealed how the snub 'kills me to this day' and described Russell as a 'media darling' before suggesting in a subsequent interview that he was 'flashy'. Advertisement Related: Owen Farrell to air views on dad Andy and the Lions on Sky for tour opener Sexton, who retired after the 2023 World Cup, was added in April to Andy Farrell's coaching staff for the tour of Australia this summer, making for a potentially awkward reunion with Russell, who is the favourite to start at fly-half in the three-Test series against the Wallabies. The pair had a brief catch-up at the first squad get-together last month, however, with Russell explaining recently that the air had been cleared. 'We ended up having a laugh about the whole thing,' Russell said. 'I certainly don't bear a grudge against him and we move on.' Sexton is adamant that he will do all he can to assist Russell – who joined the Lions squad in Dublin on Monday after celebrating Bath's Premiership final victory on Sunday – in the coming weeks. Advertisement 'It's probably been blown out of proportion, really,' he said. 'I was talking about myself in 2021 and how I felt back then. And it was more really about what I thought Gatland was thinking as opposed to what I was thinking. But look, you have to deal with these types of challenges. It won't be the last time. We had a handshake and a brief chat. He was racing off because those guys who were playing in finals didn't stay too long. 'I'm looking forward to catching up with him [Russell] later. What the Lions demands of you is that if there is a rivalry – which there's not, but if there was – you leave it at the door. I'm here to help him now. I'm here to give him experiences. I'm here to answer questions. I'm not here to force myself on him or tell him what to do. It's not that relationship. I'm here to help.' Along with Russell, Bath's Will Stuart and Leicester's Ollie Chessum have also joined the squad, as well as 12 Leinster players following their URC final victory, meaning only Toulouse's Blair Kinghorn is absent from the 38-man touring party. Tadhg Furlong, who has not played since early May, joined training on Monday, while Hugo Keenan and Jamison Gibson-Park sat out the morning session along with James Ryan, who went off with a back injury on Saturday. After providing cover last week at the training camp in Portugal, Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour are due back in England's training camp on Tuesday and will not be considered for the Lions' warm-up match against Argentina on Friday. Henry Arundell has been omitted from the England squad preparing for the match on Saturday against a France XV, however, having been called into training last week. Six Bath players and three from Leicester have been selected after the final last Saturday, including the man of the match, Guy Pepper. Owen Farrell meanwhile has completed his return to Saracens after just a season with Racing 92. The 33-year-old has joined on an initial two-year deal before making the expected move to the coaching staff at his boyhood club after Saracens agreed a compensation package of around €200,000 (£170,000).

Finn Russell savours Bath win as he looks forward to Lions Test

Had Handré Pollard done his homework he might have known what was coming. For Finn Russell has previous with intercepts when attacking Twickenham's south stand. It was playing that way that he picked off Owen Farrell's pass before streaking clear in the madcap 38-38 draw between England and Scotland in 2019. And he was at it again on Saturday, coming up with the decisive moment in Bath's dogged Premiership final victory over Leicester. On this occasion he did not finish off the try himself – you suspect he probably could have – instead flinging a nonchalant pass inside to the onrushing Max Ojomoh. In a final short on champagne moments, it put the fizz in Bath's performance, extending their lead to 20-7 before a second penalty of the match proved pivotal in ensuring the 29-year wait for a Premiership title was over. Advertisement Listen to him explain his decision to make the pass to Ojomoh – whose father, Steve, was part of the Bath side that last won the title, in 1996 – and you get a pretty good idea of how the coach, Johann van Graan, has been able to end that wait, three years after taking charge of a club that was full of high-quality individuals, less so an emphasis on the collective. Related: Bath's treble win blends yesteryear charm with the recently unthinkable | Michael Aylwin 'He is a young player from Bath, who has only ever been at Bath, he is character and a brilliant player and I think for him scoring that in the final, I would like to think it is a big thing for him,' Russell said. 'He said his dad never scored in the final so he has got one over him there, he just needs to get an England cap now. 'The first time I met [Johann], I chatted to him as a man. He said: 'I know what you do on the pitch, I want to get to know you as a guy.' That is what he is, he wants a team full of good men. Whatever team you go to, you want to win stuff obviously, and I think with the recruitment he had, players and coaches, there was a real excitement from me to have the opportunity to come here.' Advertisement When the final whistle blew after Russell had thumped the ball into the crowd, there were the customary scenes of jubilation but the overriding emotion soon seemed to morph towards a blend of satisfaction and relief. For Bath have long since been favourites for the Premiership title: they had a home semi-final sewn up in mid-May and, having lifted the Premiership Cup and Challenge Cup, they were closing in on an historic treble. That brings expectation but, as Russell says, Bath have developed a winning knack this season. Russell himself has been key to that, relishing the extra dose of pragmatism that he has developed in his two seasons at Bath. He is a different player to the one who won the Pro12 title with Glasgow in 2015 – his last league triumph – and has reaped the rewards. As such he joins up with the British & Irish Lions in Dublin on Monday – after revelling in extended celebrations and a bus parade on Sunday – with a spring in his step. 'When you get to these moments and it is a knockout game it is very different, it is a one-off game so looking forward to the Lions there are three Tests at the end of it, and they are effectively knockout games. You want to win the series, if you don't, that's life. 'It was a tough game [against Leicester] and we weren't at our best but finding a way to win is really important. I am going to celebrate and enjoy this one. It is a special moment, this kind of stuff does not come around often. The last time I won a title like this was 10 years ago and I want to enjoy it, that is important as well.' Advertisement Russell has had to wait almost as long for a Test start with the Lions. In 2017 he was part of the much derided Geography Six, appearing for all of five minutes as a temporary replacement for Dan Biggar against the Hurricanes. Four years later Russell left everyone wondering what might have been, coming off the bench after 10 minutes in the final Test and helping the Lions finally spread their wings after two turgid matches against the Springboks. He has Fin Smith and Marcus Smith for competition this summer but the manner in which he has guided Bath to glory this season is evidence that Russell deserves his shot against Australia. 'When you get to the Lions it is another level of intensity, it is the best of the best from Britain and Ireland,' he said. 'I am looking forward to the challenge, everyone is fighting for Test spots but it is not just getting in the Tests, it is winning them as well. Every training session and every game you play before that counts. 'It is something that has been in the back of my mind since being named in the squad but you have got games to win at Bath, titles to win at Bath, which we have gone on and done. The focus will go on to the Lions and how do I get myself ready for what is coming. When you get there it is the best of the best and you have got to be on it every day training wise and take your chance when it comes.'

Bath's Premiership win is the club's first since 1996 [BBC] Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Bath to welcome home their Rugby Premiership-winning team. The club will then host a ticketed party in the stadium. Bath fan Theo told BBC Radio Bristol he was "immensely proud" of the team. "Everyone's here. Even if you couldn't go to the final, you can still see this," he said. "We've won three trophies and you get to see the players." Fellow fan Guy, from Bristol, joked: "I've got to be careful because all my neighbours are Bristol fans. "I'm watching the parade from Milsom Street and it's brilliant." The open top bus has been making its way through Bath's packed streets [BBC] Bath were the trailblazing team in the league this season and went into the final as overwhelming favourites after finishing 11 points clear at the top of the table. "What an effort - we had to dig deep, fair play to Leicester but I think we deserved it after the year we've had," Spencer added. Follow BBC Somerset on Facebook and X.
