Johnny Sexton insists he is ‘here to help' Finn Russell despite past Lions criticism
Johnny Sexton has insisted he is 'here to help' Finn Russell in his capacity as British & Irish Lions assistant coach, after the pair shook hands and cleared the air last month following the former Ireland captain's previous criticism of the Scotland fly-half.
Sexton toured with the Lions in 2013 and 2017 but was a surprise omission from Warren Gatland's squad in 2021. In his autobiography, the former Ireland captain revealed how the snub 'kills me to this day' and described Russell as a 'media darling' before suggesting in a subsequent interview that he was 'flashy'.

Sexton, who retired after the 2023 World Cup, was added in April to Andy Farrell's coaching staff for the tour of Australia this summer, making for a potentially awkward reunion with Russell, who is the favourite to start at fly-half in the three-Test series against the Wallabies.
The pair had a brief catch-up at the first squad get-together last month, however, with Russell explaining recently that the air had been cleared. 'We ended up having a laugh about the whole thing,' Russell said. 'I certainly don't bear a grudge against him and we move on.'
Sexton is adamant that he will do all he can to assist Russell – who joined the Lions squad in Dublin on Monday after celebrating Bath's Premiership final victory on Sunday – in the coming weeks.

'It's probably been blown out of proportion, really,' he said. 'I was talking about myself in 2021 and how I felt back then. And it was more really about what I thought Gatland was thinking as opposed to what I was thinking. But look, you have to deal with these types of challenges. It won't be the last time. We had a handshake and a brief chat. He was racing off because those guys who were playing in finals didn't stay too long.
'I'm looking forward to catching up with him [Russell] later. What the Lions demands of you is that if there is a rivalry – which there's not, but if there was – you leave it at the door. I'm here to help him now. I'm here to give him experiences. I'm here to answer questions. I'm not here to force myself on him or tell him what to do. It's not that relationship. I'm here to help.'
Along with Russell, Bath's Will Stuart and Leicester's Ollie Chessum have also joined the squad, as well as 12 Leinster players following their URC final victory, meaning only Toulouse's Blair Kinghorn is absent from the 38-man touring party. Tadhg Furlong, who has not played since early May, joined training on Monday, while Hugo Keenan and Jamison Gibson-Park sat out the morning session along with James Ryan, who went off with a back injury on Saturday.
After providing cover last week at the training camp in Portugal, Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour are due back in England's training camp on Tuesday and will not be considered for the Lions' warm-up match against Argentina on Friday. Henry Arundell has been omitted from the England squad preparing for the match on Saturday against a France XV, however, having been called into training last week. Six Bath players and three from Leicester have been selected after the final last Saturday, including the man of the match, Guy Pepper.
Owen Farrell meanwhile has completed his return to Saracens after just a season with Racing 92. The 33-year-old has joined on an initial two-year deal before making the expected move to the coaching staff at his boyhood club after Saracens agreed a compensation package of around €200,000 (£170,000).

AFL world sends flood of messages after Buddy and Jesinta share 'surprise' family news
AFL icon Buddy Franklin and his wife Jesinta have announced they are expecting their third child with fans congratulating the pair after the 'surprise' news. Franklin finished his AFL career back in 2023 having called time after more than 300 games with Hawthorn and the Sydney Swans. Despite being one of the biggest names in the game, Franklin often remained out of the spotlight during his career and has enjoyed retirement since. On Tuesday, Jesinta announced the pair are expecting their third child, which has come as a surprise even to them. Their second child, Rocky, was born back in 2021 and the latest news was shared by Jesinta on social media. "Tullulah & Rocky are getting a baby brother or sister for Christmas. The most beautiful surprise of all," she wrote to her followers. "Our hearts are full and yet, we share this news with deep sensitivity. I know that announcements like this can be incredibly hard for those who are walking the path of infertility or loss. My heart is with you, always." The announcement came with a video showing Jesinta's silhouette with their kids running around. View this post on Instagram A post shared by JESINTA. (@jesinta_franklin) Jesinta went into detail about the struggles of pregnancy and admitted their third child was a lovely surprise for the growing family. 'Even though we thought we were happy and done with two beautiful children we have been lucky enough to add another to the family,' she wrote. 'Life works in mysterious ways and I'm leaning into this next chapter with a grateful heart. Lulu and Rocky are beside themselves and can't wait to meet their baby. Keeping the gender a surprise this time round.' Former Swans teammates Nick Blakey and Tom Papley were quick to congratulate the pair after the announcement. Swans great Nick Davis also congratulated them with a cheeky comment about wanting to see a comparison of Franklin's belly, mirroring Jesinta's video announcement. 'Don't even... he's rude and training for a marathon so I'm a blob and he's the hottest fit dad going around,' Jesinta joked back. After finishing up with the Sydney Swans, Franklin's family moved to the Gold Coast where he has enjoyed retirement. Franklin played 172 games for the Swans, but he also made 182 appearances for Hawthorn and is considered a legend at both clubs. Jesinta said the roles had very much reversed between her and Buddy since he retired from the AFL, with the former Miss Universe Australia winner putting her own career on the back-burner during her husband's glittering 19-year stint in the AFL. The legendary goalkicker's wife says he's been so supportive of Jesinta pursuing her own professional goals and she's grateful to have the extra help around the house. 'Look, we're still working on picking up our dirty laundry and learning to put them in the basket,' Jesinta said. 'But no, other than that it's so nice to have him around. It's so nice to have that extra support at home as well. 'For so long I was the support system to him because footy always came first and there was just not a lot of room in his schedule to move. Now it's really nice to have that reciprocated so I can do a little bit more with my career and he can be at home with the kids.' While Franklin has remained largely out of the media, he did launch a podcast with AFL great Shane Crawford earlier this year.

NRL fans rally around Indi Carroll after sad setback for daughter of Manly legend
NRL fans are sending messages of support to Indi Carroll - a Manly cheerleader and daughter of club legend Mark Carroll - after she revealed she'd been knocked back from joining the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. For the second year running, Indi has been left heartbroken to miss out on selection for the most famous cheerleading squad in the world. The 26-year-old, who has been a cheerleader for Manly for the last decade, made it to the final round of tryouts in Dallas. 'This past weekend, I had the incredible honour of standing among 80 phenomenal dancers on finals day for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders - a dream I've held close to my heart for as long as I can remember,' she said in a statement. 'Coming from Australia, my journey looked different. I didn't grow up in the same systems or with the same access, and I don't have a large social media following or a history in the American dance scene. 'Many of the women auditioning were not only remarkable performers but showcased years of specialised training, gymnastic foundations, and performance experience in styles I simply didn't invest in growing up in Australia, however I showed up anyway, as fully and authentically as I could. I brought everything I had - my heart, my training and my deep love for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleader's legacy. "I danced with every ounce of passion I had, knowing I was representing not only myself, but also the community back home who dared to dream with me. Unfortunately, my journey came to an end (on Sunday). I didn't advance to training camp for a second attempt, and yes, that's hard to say because when you want something so deeply, it's hard to fall short." The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are the subject of popular Netflix series 'America's Sweethearts', with Season 2 set to premiere in coming days. "I walk away from this experience incredibly proud," Indi added. "I left everything I had on that field. I carried a little piece of Sydney with me to Dallas, Texas, and showed up wholeheartedly as myself. 'To be in that room, to be considered among the top 80 across the world, and to have represented where I'm from on such a world-class stage, that's something I will carry with pride forever. This journey teaches you to embrace your most vulnerable self, stand proud in a place that once felt impossible to reach and be proud of yourself regardless of the outcome. 'Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who believed in me and supported me throughout this journey. I'm not sure what next now, but I'm excited to find out.' Father Mark played 88 games for Manly across an illustrious first-grade career that also saw him represent NSW and Australia. Indi's heartbreak comes with a tinge of happiness for fellow Aussie Faith Ward. The 22-year-old from Western Australia has been lucky enough to advance to the training camp phase of tryouts. Fans took to social media to express their condolences for Indi, while imploring her to keep her head up and remain positive. "Two things my dad has always said - never let fear hold you back and if you can dream it, you can do it," she said last year. NRL fans all say same thing after Manly make 'sad' decision on Tom Trbojevic
The Manly Sea Eagles reportedly held mini-crisis talks on Monday after their latest shock defeat and it's been suggested star fullback Tom Trbojevic is set for a permanent move to centre. Manly were left stunned last Thursday having been humbled at the hands of the Titans to see them drop out of the eight and into 11th place. Manly have now lost three of their last four games and fans have been growing increasingly frustrated with the performances. The Daly Cherry-Evans saga could be starting to take its toll on the playing group with the halfback's next club still not announced. The drama appears to have finally unsettled the fan base with the halfback's form also dipping. But one of the major concerns across the last few weeks has been the fitness and form of Trbojevic. The star fullback is the highest-paid player at the club and was once considered one of the best fullbacks in the game. Although three separate injuries so far in 2025 appears to have hampered the 28-year-old who has looked a shadow of himself this year. And after Trbojevic spent some time at centre last year - when returning from injury - it appears the move could be his new home going forward. Coach Anthony Seibold is under immense pressure to turn things around and reportedly held a seven-minute session with each player over their performances. And in this meeting it was decided Trbojevic would move to centre having visibly lost his mobility and agility this year. This will allow Lehi Hopoate to remain at fullback with the Sea Eagles looking more threatening with his speed and athleticism at the back. And few Manly fans have disagreed with Seibold's move. Only a couple of weeks ago, Bryan Fletcher encouraged Manly to make the move as they waited for Trbojevic to return from injury. "He is way too good, it's clearly evident, he needs to be around the ball because things happen," Fletcher said on SEN Radio. "He is too valuable to this team to be playing on the wing. I know Tom is a terrific has to be in the centres. Things happen around Hopoate." SEN Radio host Jimmy Smith went further and said Trbojevic looked like a 'shell' of his former self. "He is a shell of his former self and it is so sad to see. He can't explode, he has no strength in his legs, he can't break a not Tom Trbojevic. Manly what do you do?" he said on Monday. "It is so sad to see..." The move is expected to see Jason Saab drop out of the backline as Seibold looks to reignite their season. The move could help boost Manly with Seibold facing pressure in the team's two next home games against the Wests Tigers and the South Sydney Rabbitohs. As much as I want Turbo at the back.. this is a good move to, hopefully, give some consistency to our spine which we've lacked for years now.. and it shows in the year to year of yoyo be it mass changes to the spine mid-season is not ideal.. — Silvatails (@Goodsy2008) June 16, 2025 Yes there is Saab goes Garrick to wing and turbo to centre 🤷♂️ — Eaglesrule (@eaglesrule1802) June 16, 2025 I've been saying this all year. — UptheWahs 95 (@CharlieMetge) June 16, 2025 Despite the loss, the Sea Eagles were looking at another horror injury when Haumole Olakau'atu went off clutching at his shoulder. The big second-rower has been Manly's best forward this year and was looking at a season-ending injury. Although the star has avoided shoulder surgery in a welcome boost and could be back after four to six weeks. Another long-term injury would have rocked the club with Taniela Paseka (achilles) already missing from their forward stocks.
